After a short hiatus Star Wars: Rebels is BACK! We left off at some pretty interesting turn of events with Ezra using the Dark Side of the Force and the implications that might it might cause. Is Ezra leading more towards the Dark Side? Can Kanan control his fear of being a Jedi teacher? These are questions that needed answering. Did we get them answered?

FYI: Fans of the last Yoda arc from the Clone Wars series will like this episode. What does that mean?

    SCROLL DOWN TO FIND OUT!

    LAST CHANCE FOR SPOILERS!!!!

    What worked for me:

    - Hearing Frank Oz as Yoda. Nuff said.

    - They mysticism of the Force and the Jedi

    Temple.png

People complained that the Prequel Trilogy destroyed the mystical side of the Force. What they didn’t know is that couldn’t be FURTHER from the truth. Episodes like this and from the Clone Wars IMO further cement how mystical/magical the Force truly is. The visions that Ezra sees gives away that the Force is testing Ezra and by testing him also meaning that the Dark Side is in full effect. These visions might be similar to what Luke had faced,on Degobah, but…..

    - This might not be exactly the same as Luke’s “Dark Side Cave” moment/trial.

The episode seemed like we were getting a “Dark Side Cave” vibe from the start, but in the end I felt it came across more like the Younglings episode “The Gathering” from Clone Wars where the young padawans look for Kyber crystals and face similar trials as they search for the crystals.

    The gathering.jpg

Did I mention Ezra is given a Kyber crystal at the end? Hmmmmmmm. Just throwing that out there.

Either way, I love how Rebels is pulling from EVERY Star Wars source. It’s nice to be rewarded as a fan for taking in all the material given to us over different mediums. (a repeated theme in this review.)

    *side note*

There are parallels that are obviously taken from the ESB moment, but I don’t believe that the Degobah cave is the same as the Jedi Temple on Lothal. As the Clone Wars Episode “Voices” showed us, a Dark Side cloud surrounded Yoda as he entered the cave in which it displays the obvious influence it has within it.
    Sith Shrine.jpg
I don’t get the same sense in “Path of the Jedi”. Just an opinion, mind you.

-Yoda has seemed to have mastered much in the 15 years that he was being trained by Qui-Gon Jinn

    Ezra and Yoda.png

Judging from Qui-Gon’s little spirit light that appeared and spoke to Yoda back in the Clone Wars episode, I mentioned previously…it seems Yoda has mastered the same thing as well. Thus, why he’s able to commune with Ezra and Kanan from across the galaxy.

    Yoda and Qui-Gon.jpg

At first of hearing of Yoda’s appearance in Rebels, I thought it could come off cheap and forced (no pun intended) into the story. Handling it the way the staff did, again only makes the hardcore fans like us love this series and the new cohesive canon even more!

    - KOTOR (Knights Of The Old Republic) aspect was introduced!

    Star Map Rebels.png

Those that know of the original KOTOR game will understand how AMAZING this was. Kanan is using his Holocron as a map and not just any map…A STAR MAP. Even cooler that it came from within the Holocron! Double EU awesomenewss!

    Star Map KOTOR.jpg

I recognized it right away with only a few minutes later when Kanan actually called it a "Star map”. Really cool moment for all the EU fans!

    What didn’t work for me:

-Apparently there is a Jedi Temple on Lothal…*sigh*

    Lothal Temple.png

Not crazy about the fact that a Jedi temple just HAPPENS to be on the same planet they are all based out of. This could come off as “lazy”, but this screams of limitations due to budget, which is just a damn shame. It would be nice to see Kanan and Ezra go to some other exotic planet that we may/or may not know which a temple could have been on. Instead, we are treated to boring as hell Lothal…Can you tell I’m ready to go somewhere else???

    Parting shots:

PRAISE THE FORCE!!!!!!!!! THE SLING SHOT IS GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Hopefully) LONG LIVE THE STAPLE GUN SABER!

    Staple.png

This could be foreshadowing! Out of all the “vision deaths” of the Ghost crew…Kanan’s is the only one we ACTUALLY see with our own eyes and it’s kinda brutal. Could the series be trying to tell us something? I’ve been predicting Kanan’s death in season 1 for awhile and this only helps my cause

    Kanan death.png

What an episode! We essentially see Yoda give Ezra his blessing to train as a Jedi and we saw the Force at work!...from a different point of view that is!

As always, I look forward to reading, debating and discussing the episode here in the Cantina!

This episode, by far and away, was my favorite episode of Rebels to date. It was nearly perfect across the board.

I wish they had given him a different lightsaber color. Nothing exotic but anything but blue. I also thought it would have been a nice touch to add in the Jedi mantra when the vision Inquisitor was about to kill Ezra. "There is no death, there is the Force." Overall good ep maybe a 7.

I really enjoyed this episode, I got an Anakin vibe from Ezra though. I think if Kanan dies then Ezra will fall to the darkside. He wants to protect his friends and has alot of pent up anger in him which we saw when he used the darkside in the last episode. I look forward to what is to come from this series.

A fantastic episode. Some of the plot was a little eye-roll inducing (Temple on Lothal. Euuggh) But still. Probably the series' darkest. Those deaths. The way they were shot. Fantastic!

Also, the music seems much better in this episode. I thought the earlier scores were a little shaky. This was an 8/10 for me.

I don't like Ezra's lightsaber, it reminds me of those Chinese bootleg laser-sword toys with hilts like these.
Also.... muaaaaaah.... JEDI TEMPLE ON LOTHAL! No kidding!!!! I won't be surprised that in Season 7, we still following our Heroes on Lothal,
where they already visited places like Senate building, Naboo Royal Palace, podraces, huge imperial shipyards for star destroyers and skyhook of Prince Xizor,
will to everyones shock uncover, that Empire was secretly building a Death Star inside the planet and plans to breaktrough the core!!!!!
    -
Joking aside, the rest of the review sounds like it is kinda good episode, so I can't wait to see it mostly because of Yoda.
The funny thing with the temple. We have Agent Kalus, who somehow is able to sniff out force sensitive people by his nose. Inquisitor trained in the Dark Side of the Force. Both are looking for Jedi and Padawan, yet no one is guarding a huge Jedi Temple. Also, why is there temple on Lothal, when there is one on Coruscant?
Why is everything on Lothal (yoda)

Also it is weird that Rebels has such small budget compared with Clone Wars. It is Star Wars and it is Disney. So what is the problem?

Well, Rebels has a smaller budget because Disney is funding it, and by season 3, because George wanted to push the animation for Darth Maul's return, he began to pay for The Clone Wars from his own pocket. Mind you, it created an amazing 3 seasons thereafter, but yeah it actually makes sense Rebels has a tighter budget. Seeing how well it's doing however, and how the style works very well for its budget, I hope Rebels gets moved to the main Disney Channel so it can reach The Clone Wars levels for ratings, and their budget, seeing how season 2 was already ordered, should go up thanks to the success.

Well, it is true that in wake of Lucas' own injection, the show got really good in case of animation mostly.
Tough we've got different planets, locations and designs before since the Season One and I still regard the Malevolence storyline one of the best in that Season.
That is some really tight budget we are talking about then :/ That's a shame, Rebels could be so much more with more money.

It will soon enough. I expect season 2 to do with the actual formation of all these rebels cells, like the Lothal Rebels and the Onderon Rebels (from The Clone Wars), into the actual Rebel Alliance. An episode with X-Wings and Biggs Darklighter is my dream, but hopefully something close to that :D

That would be really cool! Some characters that I can actually care about. Tough if it is still canon, we won't see Bigs like for 1 year before the ANH and he would still be a TIE fighter pilot.

Of course. Rebels does have to get pretty close imo to A New Hope, or at least up to that bounty hunter death star plans heist. Now a tie in with the spnoff and the movie? Amazing.

Just saw the episode finally. Wow, except for Lothal, it was really good. I don't have any serious cons with this episode, the Inquisitor bits were pretty cool.
That star map more remimended of Episode 2 map in the room with Jedi kids and Yoda. The part with Inquisitor reminded me of ESB in the cave on Dagobah and hints on things we saw in Clone Wars.
Tough I think that it is not a good idea to train Ezra :D I wonder, if we will see Vader once more and get maybe more Inquisitors later on?

The Star Maps part totally reminded me of KOTOR and its Star Maps connected with the Star Forge. That was a cool way to link EU. The next episode title, "Idiot's Array", may have the one and only LANDO CALRISSIAN. That's what I found on an article online, but if Billy Dee Williams is actually back - Awesome!
