Obi-Wan tells Ezra that basically his purpose is different from Obi-Wan's. He tells Ezra that he doesn't belong there and he must go. I'm actually firmly believing at this point that Ezra will sacrifice himself to save Leia in some way. Obi-Wan protects Luke. Ezra's purpose is with the Rebellion.

Maybe he had contact with Yoda, who appeared to Ezra on Lothal.

So, I need to watch this a few more times before i really decide on what I liked and disliked about it, but the visual callbacks felt overwhelming at times.

Also, Obi-Wan says Luke is the Chosen One. I mean, obviously we can't take that as fact - perspective and all of that Jedi jazz - but that's pretty huge in itself (it pretty much retcons Anakin's arc as the Chosen One into one of fall and redemption solely), meaning that, if Luke is indeed the Chosen One, then he will ultimately bring balance to the Force (supposedly) and, further still, it means that the Sith could theoretically still exist after ROTJ (the Sith being destroyed was part of the prophecy).

This perplexes me currently and certainly raises more questions than it gives answers, and, in my opinion, further pushes along my previous notion that we would learn more about the Prophecy of the Chosen One in TLJ/IX.

I love the ambiguity that was needed and yeah it opens up a lot of new storytelling opportunities.
I mean retcons are so Lucas, remember when we thought the Return of the Jedi was meant to be Luke not Anikin Force ghost?
Not necessarily, Maul sees a way to get his revenge through the chosen one, so the fall of the Sith is still a ting.

I've seen it twice, and I liked it and hated it at the same time. Needs to sink in. Very deep in many ways. Not sure how I feel about the ending on the homestead. It was vague enough to pay fan service, but was it necessary? Ezra knows Obi-Wan is alive, I imagine many do not, and we know that Bail does, but has told the rebellion he died. The animation was beautiful, and I loved Obi-Wan's control of the Force.

Well exactly, that's why this one perplexes me further. I mean retcon in a loose sense, of course, seeing as I guess it can be argued that Luke destroyed the Sith? But then again, he didn't, which is why I'm still not sure about this episode.

Except the destruction of the Sith by Anakin made sense: he ultimately sacrificed himself to kill The Emperor, which destroyed the Sith in its entirety and fulfilled the Prophecy set up in retrospect in the prequels. Luke didn't kill either of them, so I'm having a tough time figuring out if the Prophecy was fulfilled in ROTJ in the new canon (I mean, I guess not considering other Dark Siders, but alas); likewise, I, for one, fail to see how Maul's lust for vengeance confirms that the Sith fell in any way.

I'm sure the Jedi would have preferred a more direct less lethal way of prophecy fulfillment;)
Without Luke nothing of that would have happened, and the Prophecy wasn't really fleshed out no one said that the CO would have to kill.
His last words: "He will avenge us."

Haha I agree, I always found the wording of the prophecy odd; ...

I think "destroy the Sith" heavily implies killing or a similar act. I've calmed down a bit now (that episode had me amped up and confused for a few reasons) so I do agree that he can be the Chosen One, but I still think that the choice to retcon George's retcon of the fall/redemption into the fulfillment of the prophecy is an extremely bold statement by LFL.

Well, I mean, playing devil's advocate here: I assume that he was referring primarily to The Emperor and how he took everything - their brothers in arms - away from them (Savage and Anakin for Maul and Kenobi respectively) and not the Sith as an entity. Revenge is not the Jedi way! ;)

How does this Retcon anything? Obi-Wan believes Luke to be the chosen one. He thought that about Anakin but can't fathom that Anakin could ever be redeemed "he's more machine now than man, twisted and evil." Neither he nor Yoda believe Vader/Anakin has any good left in him. So Obi-Wan thinks that the prophecy must be Luke. It's why he pushed hard for Luke to be trained by Yoda, when Yoda wasn't so sure about it because I gather Yoda doesn't subscribe to a prophecy anymore - especially if this one is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It Retcons nothing. Luke as we know is not the "chosen one" as the prophecy suggests because Anakin actually destroys the Sith himself. Obi-Wan dies believing Luke is their Chosen One. Whether or not he still believes that after the Anakin kills the Emperor and then dies himself is unknown. But it retcons nothing.

Now if you take Obi-Wan's words that perhaps its " certain point of view" then you could say Luke's love and compassion for his father is what destroys the Sith. But then, its not a person, but an idea.

Anakin still falls and redeems himself by killing the Emperor and allowing himself to die by forgiving himself and letting go of his anger.

I don't see Kenobi's "He is" as an actual retcon. I just think it points to the ambiguity that even Yoda admitted in Ep. III: "Unless the prophecy, misread could have been?"

Edit: @BespinMinersUnion1138 beat me to the punch.

They don't reveal how he knew for certain but it doesn't have to be very complicated or contrived really. Chopper had already been recharged by the time Ezra woke up. He could have communicated to Ben who they were and why they were there.

Ben's been watching Luke and the galaxy through the Force for a long time. He's a Master. Of course he knows about Ezra just like he knew Maul was there.

Chopper told him when Obi-Wan recharged him.

I have to watch the episode again, but right now it leaves me with the desire to watch A New Hope.

Had a chance to see the episode in HD, and I definitely saw the smoke. But in the last shot, wherein we see Maul in Obi-Wan's arms, you can see the smoke is rising from his side, not his chest, which implies it's from his lightsabers. Though I didn't check to see if they show him still holding them.

It's ambiguous, but I still don't think Obi-Wan injured him.

If you note, the second Vader lets go of his anger to save Luke, he dies. He says nothing can stop him from dying before Luke even takes the mask off of him. It makes sense that Maul let's go of his anger towards Obi-Wan when he realizes they are both on the same side of stopping the Sith.

Sensing a nearby hostile presence, especially one that Ben had some history with, is something that meshes well with the concept of "the Force as a guide". Treating it as some sort of spiritual Google, not so much. Not when a much simpler explanation is readily at hand.

I don't think being able to sense the presence of another Force user...especially one that is on the Empire's most wanted list is "spiritual Google." By saying Chopper told him, it undermines Obi-Wan's powers of communing and using the Force. Chopper may have told him about the rebellion and Ezra's part in it...but Obi-Wan doesn't need Chopper to tell him. Besides...Ahsoka knew about Ezra and was talking to Bail, who knew about Obi-Wan.

I think we're going to find that Obi-Wan may be a hermit, but he's plugged into what's going on in the galaxy quite well.

I enjoyed the episode. While my fanboy heart may have wanted an epic battle between Maul and Obi-Wan, I think the short fight was the right choice.

I am not sure whether Obi-Wan (at this point in the story) truly believes that Luke is the Chosen One. It seems clear to me that (at this point of the story) he no longer thinks that Anakin was the Chosen One. Obi-Wan feels that guilty about failing Anakin (and the Jedi Order and the entire Galaxy). Maybe believing that Luke is the Chosen One is what prevents Obi-Wan from going insane, wandering alone in a desert at the edge of the galaxy. It gives him purpose.

While Obi-Wan may have sensed that Ezra is a Jedi Padawan, it does not explain how he knew Ezra's name. Chopper may have told Obi-Wan Ezra's name, but it seems to me that Obi-Wan may have been in contact with the Rebellion (i.e., Bail Organa) during this period. I hope that this issue will be clarified.

By the way, many people felt that Ezra might (at some point) fall to the dark side. Do we still think that this may happen now that Maul's story had ended?

At this point, I really think that Obi-Wan believes that Luke is the Chosen One, after seeing Anakin become Vader and joining the Sith. Not knowing the future, because always in motion it is.
There is a point when Maul's arms are raised, before he drops them and lets go of his sabers, that you can see his scarf and below are red. Cut material. It's very quick but there.

Also, my highlight of the day.

    "

    Phenominal job!!!
