After the crawl, the film will begin with a shot of Unkar Plutt's arm floating through space, gripping Qui-Gon Jinn's lightsaber...

Absolutely. The crawl has been a tradition through seven films, four directors and forty years. Even JJ Abrams, who was going to open The Force Awakens without a crawl decided against it. In my opinion, the crawl fading away to a ship flying over the screen is an impactful, iconic moment in pop culture that is stirring, especially for longstanding fans. It's built into the foundation of generations of fans.

Rian will begin the film with a crawl, followed more than likely by a First Order ship with Kylo Ren and Hux arriving at the Supreme Leader's lair, before we finally cut to one of the most anticpated moments in cinematic history. We'll see, of course, but it seems a difficult tradition to break.
