Personally I would prefer Snoke's identity to remain shrouded in mystery even when the sequel trilogy is over (like they did with Palpatine after the OT ended). Lucasfilm could slowly explore more of Snoke's background through anthology films and other media but only in form of small cameos (similar to what Stephen King does in his novels when he references a character from a different book). This would add to the idea of a shadowy figure who has been secretly pulling the strings for hundreds of years in the background. They should make him the G-Man of Star Wars whose true identity remains a mystery for years to come. This would help me stay more interested in future standalone movies beyond episode 9.

That seems to be the plan for Snoke according to a recent interview.

All that remains is for Kylo to strike him down and take over the order.

I believe it will be so .

Snoke's true identity will be left unexplained in this trilogy.

But, commercial logic dictates they would tease with Snoke's origins.

Disney can easily left Snoke unexplained and still make piles of additional money on for instance teasing millions of Plagueites with just vague hints that can be interpreted in many ways.....which in fact they are doing all along.

In hindsight since having viewed TFA multiple times, I had always considered this line to reference Rey and Kylo.
    --- Double Post Merged, Sep 9, 2017, Original Post Date: Sep 9, 2017 ---
That could/would be Kylo's atonement. It could also damage him (Kylo) severely (spiritually/through the Force). It would be a heavy price to pay even being an ultimately heroic thing to do.

This is such a fantastic idea. Turning Snoke into a jigsaw, which pieces are spread all across the SW canon. If they want to pursue such approach, these easter eggs need to be way subtler than the cameo of Ponda Baba and Dr. Ezavan in Rogue One or end-credit scenes of Marvel films.

I would prefer subtle references like this one for example:

Young Yoda movie. In order to become a Jedi Master Yoda needs to explore some ancient, Yavin 4 like temples that have driven the native Alien tribes insane whenever they tried to settle in that area. When Yoda investigates the temple we see ancient murals/statues that depict Snoke, indicating that he is even older than the temples and so powerful that former civilizations have worshipped him like a god. To the casual viewer it's just an old temple with murals and statues. To the SW Fan it's "OMG Snoke is really that ancient and powerful!"

I think exactly the same way.
Snoke is treasure chest for long lasting story over his origins which could be booster, teaser, and motivator in many future releases (books, films, cartoons).
Of course to maximise such story telling potential of Snoke he should be real bad ass in this trilogy, which I hope will be the case.

I completely get what you are all saying and even partially agree, but there is also the part of me that thinks that maybe we don't need the details for someone like Snoke.

In October we get that book about The Legends of Luke Skywalker that supposedly reads like stories about Luke that have been passed around. Supposedly some will be true and others will be myth and I absolutely cannot wait for this because to me, this is an amazing concept. To me, it gives the character more meaning because we get to see him as the galaxy sees him rather than just getting first-hand accounts of what really happened.

I think that Snoke is one of those characters, at least for me, that deserves to live in legend and tales rather than being full-on detailed.

Edit: To add, Lucas did it to us in RotS. Sheev dropped that oh-so-brief tale of "The Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise" and that sparked a firestorm of speculation in the fandom (even somewhat controversially in regards to Snoke some years later). I personally don't want all of the details about him. I'd love to know a bit more, but the fact that he is a mythical legend makes the character all the more powerful to me. Getting all of the details could change that and maybe not for the good.

That will be great book , thank you for the information.
In my eyes gap in the story about Luke, what was he really doing in almost 30 years, is most puzzling fact of new trilogy that all by itself speaks about very important events and information beholded in that Luke 's story.

I am looking forward to the Legends of Luke Skywalker too. I wonder how hard they will troll fan theories. Or dredge up old EU stories (often where fan theories start).

    Book goes apparetly like this:
Two teenagers are travelling to Canto Bait and are telling in between themselves 6 legend stories about Luke.

Out of this 6 stories some will be truth, some will be false.

Reminds me of roulete...isn't Canto Bait supposed to be planet of famous casinos?

(There is no such thing as coincidence, at least in Star Wars, one needs to find board and surf on waves of their logic).

    3 false legends
    3 true legends
    ?

So remnants of the Empire fled to unknown regions and adopted the first Dark Side Master they came across as their leader? Not hardly.

    Of course not.

    Empire was human-supremacist regime.
    Snoke is Alien.

I believe most logic explanation is that Snoke is part (top level) of Palpatine's contigency grand design.

Palpatine had CONTINGENCY plan described as analogy of Demesne chess board (version of chess from Star Wars).

In the chess, when king (emperor)is dead, game is lost, and all figures on table must be swept away.

Palpatine had a plan to continue game however, finding a new demesne, new chess board.

The old chess board was known galaxy. If Emperor looses(dies) than old chess board should be cleaned from figures, and start on new chess board-- Unknown part of the galaxy.

So Palpatine's contingency plan was to self-destroy remnants of the Empire in case he dies , and possibly New republic forces to, and to start new game on new demesne(unknown galaxy).Galius Rax had assignment to destroy Imperial and New Republic forces at Jakku, and select only few (the best) to go to Unknown Regions to start it over.
    ................................

Up to this point its all clear.

So let us make a step more.

For new party of chess , one needs not just demesne (board) but also one figure, most important figure.

    Emperor.

So for Palpatine's make-over of demesne in UR's to be operational, he needed 2 things.

    1.Demesne(chess board)

    2. KING(EMPEROR)

Palpatine made all preparations for Snoke to take over new demsne in the UR. Snoke is commanting First Order by the direct allowance (last Order) of Emperor Palpatine himself.

Snoke even didn't needed to be Palpatine's friend, in fact he was probabaly treat and enemy that Palpatine located in the UR's, but "enemy of my enemy is my friend" and Snoke is thus New Emperor on board, and Palpatine's revenge.

    Snoke:

    Looks like a zombie.
Is a master of the Dark Side.
Has "cheated death" to some extent.
    Is described as wise.
Has an insight into the Skywalker family.
Remained hidden whilst the galaxy was up for grabs.
Built a super-weapon that could destroy entire star systems.
Is a 7ft tall, pale alien humanoid.
Has his apprentice murder his own father to further his training.

    Plagueis:

    *See above + theme tune.

I'll say it again - if Snoke is not Plagueis then he is the biggest rip off in cinematic history without the fulfilling backstory and ridden with contradictions.
