I'm surprised nobody has posted this yet:

This is our first look at the new Star Trek series, which I believe is debuting in January on CBS' streaming service. I grant that this is likely a pre-visualization, but the quality is pretty horrendous and the ship design is even worse. It looks to be inspired by the Ralph McQuarrie concept in the 70's.

As much as I love his work on Star Wars, this Enterprise design has never worked for me and I'm astonished it appears to have been used for this new series.

What do you guys think of this first look? Am I being too pessimistic?

It's television so the graphics aren't going to be like in the movies .

Like I said, I don't suppose this is the finished product. But as it stands, it's below Enterprise's level of CGI quality over ten years ago.

Or maybe it's meant to be a "representation" of what happens sort of like the animations or simulations and stuff .

I'm fine with the design. Not my favorite, but by far not the worst trek ship. It's unique.

As for CG, I agree it's a little off but also agree it likely isn't final. 6 months out for a Streaming TV show, I'm sure this isn't final quality. But in the end, I don't really care about effects too much. Effects on Trek TV have always been low quality. To me it's part of the charm. I've had trouble at times getting into the films where the look is so much more refined. It pulls me out of the Trek Universe because of the drastic shift in look and tone (especially stark in the Next generation movies). In the end it's the characters, writing, and ability to weave cultural themes and philosophy into their stories that make Trek TV for me. If they effects are cheap, I can just go watch the Abrams reboot movies.

But admittedly nothing is going to squash my excitement for this until I see it. I've been waiting for a great Trek TV show since DS9 ended. And Fuller is one of the best showrunners on TV right now. I just hope they nail it. The movies have been fun, but to me Trek is still dead in the water until they get a successful show up and running again.

Design is not too terrible but it is kinda strange and not very appealing. It could gather some love with time though, just like the NX class from ST: Enterprise, it all depends on the execution.

The quality of production though, looks pretty bad. I've seen alot better fan-made renderings than that. They better not released it that early if you ask me. This made them no favors whatsoever.

Looks like it is the offspring of the OG Enterprise, and a Klingon battle cruiser

I could definitely buy that as both an explanation for that (horrendous) ship design and as a premise for a new series. That's a fertile area in the original timeline... and presumably the Kelvin timeline as well.

That's different studio so the TV show doesn't have to play by those rules.

I think I read somewhere that it's confirmed that this is set on the original timeline.

The role of Sarek is cast, and the release date is pushed back once again.

    [link]

They paint a rosy picture of this latest delay, but it doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

If I'm being honest, the delays are doing the exact opposite for me. I want to stay positive, but the less we actually see of the show, and the more it gets pushed back, a part of me has to wonder if CBS is actually willing to follow through with this.

Sonequa Martin-Green would have made a great RAE Sloane. She's a bad @$$ on the TWD.
