I think the explanation might be that its just how Klingons look now, that the Kelvin-verse changes are changing everything because the Klingons existed before the new timeline formed so in actuality there should be no reason they look different. Kinda like if they wanted George Kirk to appear in Discovery he would still be Chris Hemsworth or Pike would still be Bruce Greenwood. They are supposed to be the same characters as the original and thus should "look" the same as their Kelvin-verse counterparts. It would be weird but imagine they had Spock appear but it was Quinto but he acted and wore the clothes of Nimoy's.

I think that a good portion of older fans of Star Trek were wanting and expecting something more along the lines of Axanar, which is kind of why Axanar was made. It was solely for the fans. Discovery appears to be geared more toward drawing in new audiences, rather than making the old timers happy. Being one of the old timers, I can understand the decision, but it will certainly affect how much I'll enjoy the series, if at all. Here's hoping that they'll throw in just enough consistency to make it's position in the Prime Timeline "believable". :)

Personally, I'm hoping that it's a time travel thing and they're actually from the 2390's or later; only they're stuck in the 2250's. ;)

Yeah, that's the only way that slick ship and uniforms makes any sense.

I wish I liked what I'm seeing in this trailer...but it's just not doing it for me. Are there any "real" Trek people working on this show? Writers, directors, producers? Like Berman, or Frakes, or Ronald Moore?

I'm still sad that they killed Enterprise right when it was hitting it's stride....:(

But I get it, we just simply can't have a show like Star Trek anymore, no one would watch it.
    And those Klingons...

The original show runner Bryan Fuller mapped out the story (not sure if he wrote scripts), he got his start writing on DS9 and Voyager.
I agree 100% Enterprise was only getting better before it got the axe. This new series is supposed to be an anthology (every year is a different story and cast) so lets hope they revive Enterprise and let it have a proper ending.

As much as I am skeptical I thought the trailer was pretty decent and I'm actually more interested than I was before.

So I watched the trailer about a month ago. Pardon my tardiness.
The trailer was okay, maybe even good. It felt more like Battlestar Galactica, but just about everyone is taking ideas from BSG. So say we all.. lol. At least they're not "ripping off of Star Wars" this time. Oh wait, they did. And in the worst way possible. Two women walking through a desert, in the garb.. of Rey. No surer way to invoke the wrath of the internet's legions of gamergaters and meninists than to paint your main character in the image of "the usurper". Without fail they responded. Ghostbusters all over again.
Still, I loved the visual style. The uniforms are.. not so hot.. if you're going to reboot Trek shouldn't Trek 2 uniform inspiration be the wiser course of action?
Then I was left wondering what these aliens who looked like @Amanaman 's avatar were.. I was susequently informed they were Klingons.
It is kind of sad what has happened to Star Trek. Not just the acrid state of affairs between CBS and the fans right now, but the content Star Trek feels forced to make to stop bleeding money. I almost want to say the Fridge has been Nuked on the franchise. And it really shouldn't be. But here we are, another hard reboot (2 in 10 years, like MundaneMatt said, not good) with a new Federation ship and new Federation crew. But for some reason we keep going backwards. What's the bugaboo about moving forward with the old prime, one wonders. I don't see anything here that can't take place 300 years after Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise.

I'm a huge Star Trek fan but after the trailer I'm not planning to watch it. At least not right away, I'll wait and see what I hear and whether or not it lasts. It looks like it takes itself way too seriously to the point of being corny. Maybe it was just missing because they were going for intense/dramatic scenes with the trailer, but I got none of that fun or sense of humor from it that Star Trek always has. Maybe it will be good, if not there are 50 years worth of Star Trek television/films/literature to choose from should I ever need a Trek fix.

I know all eyes are on Han right now, but earlier yesterday they dropped the release date for Discovery. They also revealed that only the First Part of the 2 hour premier will be free tv. So your gonna need to pay 6 bucks to see the other half.
Thinking about this.. I've come to one of my 'ere the sun rises' theories: Everything we saw in the discovery trailer is from the first hour of the show. All of it. The promo is a promo.. for the promo. And it's gonna cut from free tv with the "we engaged the Klingons".

Just a little too eerie in similarity, IMHO..

I'm a big Star Trek fan, I grew up watching TNG/DS9/VOY and I did also enjoy watching Enterprise. but I am really struggling to gather any enthusiasm for this new show.

I'm not much of a fan of the JJ Abrams Trek films, he tried to turn Star Trek into Star Wars and it didn't work for me. I like both for different reasons and I think they should be kept separate. As this new show is based on the Abrams Trek then that's putting me off already, that and the fact it's another prequel series. I'd have much rather Star Trek returned to the original timeline and set it after the TNG.

To be honest, as much as I loved TNG/DS9/VOY and Enterprise, they were all blown out of the water when the re-imagined BSG came out. BSG is still my favourite TV show ever.

    Not looking good for Discovery.
Oh well. No matter how much bad Trek they pump out, the great old stuff will always be there. Same for Star Wars.

Have any of you ponied up for CBS All-Access to watch? I'd like to hear some opinions because I am super-curious about the quality of the show.

Well it's on Netflix in the U.K. & I have seen part 1 of the opening episode will watch part 2 later.
& I have to say so far. Have enjoyed it of course you don't get a lot of character depth yet but that should come with later episodes. The production values though are very very good the effects are particularly impressive though that actually leads to a small nit pick in that it doesn't really look like this is meant to be about 10 years before TOS but that is a very minor negative so Iam actually quite optimistic about this series.

I have asked this thread to be merged with the other Star Trek Discovery thread.

No, an anthology was pitched but rejected. If this series gets a season 2, will be Star Trek Discovery season 2 and continue with the same character.

Enterprise was a terrible show. Let it be.
    --- Double Post Merged, Sep 25, 2017, Original Post Date: Sep 25, 2017 ---
The first two episodes of Discovery were/are a mixed bag.

The show looks fanastic. Going to a serial based show with Star Trek is a very welcome change/update. Except for the main character, I though the cast was really good and did a good job.

However - the main character (I dunno if its the writing or acting) I found just......off-putting and the switching bewteen "human" and "vulcan" was just an excuse for people who ddn't know how to write women. The Klingon's have changed so much they don't look like Klingons anymore. Its obvious from the design this was susposed to follow the Star Trek movie franchise BUT later in development they changed that, so it makes no sense. They already hit the "SJW" nail square on the head, lets hope they cans tay away from it int he future. And the opening, which was susposed to be insipring/cool was just corny and lame.
