Cinemascore gave an "A-" to ep.1 and 2. So a very good rating.

And I can't remember all the times that during election days (at least here), exit polls
suggested something that was not in ligne with the actual results when they came.
It's not that they are not so infallible..

However, TFA audience score is 88%.
In this forum it looks like around the 20-25% of us didn't like the movie.
Of course this is not a scientific method... But I think overall things match.

Simply about the 20-25% of people that liked TFA didn't like TLJ.

As for the critics, I don't think they were buy.
I think they've come to the easiest assumptions without taking into account many variables.

TFA was a success, but the main critic was "it's too much a reboot"
Since this one is not, or it looks definitely different, they've though: job done.
Even those who didn't like that much TFA are going to love this one.

I usually ignore the ratings. It's rare to match with public and critics. I usually follow my favourite project directors and discover new ones or the general plot, reading some articles, festival tendences, and yes, sometimes reading some critic or user recomendations.
Sometimes I find a masterpiece where people give low ratings and great critics, and vice versa.

But, the user ratings on those web sites has to mean something, specially when there is a significative difference, from user/critics and films from the same saga.

Abrams was criticised but the difference in RT user rating, for exemple, is huge, and probably it means something SW (or cinema in general) followers think. Not in terms of directing, but probably the structure of the story and the character development. And this aspect is difficult because in some ways you have to follow (or try it) previous established references and preferences.

TFA has 88% and TLJ has 56% and decreasing in RT
TFA has 8,1 and TLJ has 7,9 and decreasing (it began with 8,4)

I always read TFA was a rehash or rip-off, but not a bad movie, specially being a sequel. What we are reading from TLJ is not that good as a sequel from TFA and the character development is hasty, ignoring previous characteristics.

Probably fans in general want to explore new things but not taking huge risks and precipitation with beloved characters.

RT in particular as quite a few floors and Star Wars always sees to be effected more than most for the following two reasons.

    1. Trolling from people who hate Star Wars & Disney
Even before the film came out users were rating it at half a star with comments like I'm sure it will be rubbish, I hate all these films etc... So there is naturally a bit of hate towards Star Wars. This was the same for TFA and R1 and I'd say this usually takes a good 10% off the audience score.

    2. Strong emotions due to expectations and the devisive nature of this film.
I've read the reviews and scores and some people have taken the decisions made very badly. But the stars in quite a few cases seem to be an extreme reaction and I think a bit of a protest vote. Rather than perhaps the 2 stars you might expect for a disappointing film, there are a considerable amount of half stars, interestingly from accounts that when you click on the user details you notice that this is the only film they have ever rated. I'm sure this has impacted the ratings.

I reckon the true score if you adjust for trolling and emotions from disappointed fans is probably around the 75% mark, which is still much lower than the 93% critic rating.

Since a movie cannot be 100% perfect and a movie can't be 100% bad. I suggest to know the real rating from the differents website to not consider the maximum rating votes 5/5 or 10/10 and to not consider the 0/5 or 0/10 ratings and to calculate to see the real TLJ score.

Probably implies that the critics weren't too critical.

No it does not imply that at all. Critics rate films day in day out and will consider a number of criteria when assessing if a film works or not. The audience on the whole tend to just score based a subjective view and there is nothing wrong with that.

Interestingly the audience scores from the 'Super Reviewers' have tended to give it a high score, averaging around 4/5.

I tend to score films twice in my head, one for how I rate it film from a critical point a view (I studied film) and one based on my personal enjoyment. At the weekend I saw Lego Batman (trust me not my choice), critically I think it's 4/5 but I gave it 2/5 as ultimately I did not enjoy it aside from a few jokes and the visuals. For R1 I thought critically 3.5/5 but personally a 4/5. TLJ needs a second viewing for me before I can really rate it.

Metacritic > RT for assessing the value of the score.

With RT, it's essentially positive value (I.e even 2.5/5 or 3/5) counts as positive percentage. With meta critic you can have 3/5-4/5-5/5 and it takes those and balances them.

Rt really has become overblown in terms of importance, like when they withheld JL score like it was some big event and noone really cared. That, and the graphs of people comparing RT scores to box office take (lower for lower etc) and it worked for some films but not for others. And some took this to mean RT was some sort of holy grail for reviews. What.

I only look at critics reviews. Not only the English language ones. The assumption that these critics were bought is hilariously stupid.

When this is the most popular user review on the IMDB, you know what is going on.

    --------
This movie declaration of bankruptcy to the Star Wars world
    14 December 2017 | by zacharyherz-08089See all my reviews

...but certainly not bankruptcy for Disney, seeing how they treat Star Wars only as a cash cow. I had big hopes for Star Wars when Disney had announced this triology including the participation of the reccuring cast. Similar to the Force Awakens, the story in Last Jedi is disappointing and weak (to be fair, compared to Force Awakens a bit less weak, due to some unexpected story-twists), the new characters are still not interesting but rather onedimensional and the old characters are used in a very unsatisfying way. There are many elements in these movies, which don't feel they belong in the Star Wars universe - including all those modern, misplaced jokes - which might fit in well with Marvel-movies.

In my opinion this movie wasn't written by people who really care or know a lot about Star Wars, but solely by the influence of producers, sponsors, marketers and political ideologies. As a teenager I read many of the well written Star Wars novels, which had fantastic stories and use of Star Wars worlds and figures - it's a pity that none of this creativity made it into these Disney movies.

At least Disney gave us Gareth Edwards' Rogue One. Albeit its shallow story, it was a movie which looked and felt like Star Wars. Thanks for that.

    2/10
    --------

Am I supposed to take user reviews and audience scores seriously? I don't think so. Especially when everyone who likes the movie pushes the 10/10 button and everyone who hates it the 1/10.

I have a conspiracy theory that all the big studios work together to bribe critics. Because they all want to win and play it safe.

It makes sense, the movie business isn't a competition like other businesses. Disney would want to help Sony out if they release a movie that is terrible and need critical reception to back it up. Because critical reception%=box office take. Not marketing, or brand recognition or any other reason. If that was the truth, original movies wouldn't fail to find an audience.

I hope this is a joke. You can't buy the critics. You can't go with a bag of money to the LA Times, Le Figaro or NRC Nieuwsblad and ask for high review scores. The positive reception of The Last Jedi is absolute and it is international.

Don't worry, I was being sarcastic.

Disney would never want to help Sony, only Universal.

Kathleen is married to Universal's boss. Guess they had some conversations about Colin Treverrow when the lights went out.

I didn't know that lol. Makes my joke even funnier than it was meant to be. Haha.

I'm so happy they told Treverrow to GTFO though. He already killed one franchise for me.

One of the saving graces of the new Lucasfilm. They have a ton of money. If it sucks, they fire you and start again, and again, and again until everyone agrees the final production is good and solid. Though, I feel that they would have fired Lucas somewhere during the production stages of episode I. Probably when he got the idee that 'Jar Jar is the key to all this'.

We've posted sources from inside the industry explaining why exit polls are more valuable that easy to manipulate online polls.
Generally, anything above an A- cinemascore is a blockbuster hit loved by most audience members.

As the Deadline article says, it means there are a lot of trolls who don't have anything better to do with their time.

Seriously... is this the first time ever polls and above all exits polls fail?
Do you think that those who deal with politics are less professional and scientific than these?
Yet they fail, sometimes. Even a lot.

And is it possible that the very same press that said with so much certainty people are going to adore
this movie, is just trying to restore his credibility, that is at stake?

And again, I'm not saying that they were buy.
Just that they haven't considered many variables and now are just trying to save their face.

But above all, I think it's much more easer than we think.
    There's not any conspiracy.
Press was not sold, and some people are not organizing a plot against the movie.

But simply, there are those who are going to hate every SW made by Disney no matter what.

A 20-25% of people that liked TFA, R1 but are not going to like this one.
Perhaps even more, but they're belanced by those who didn't like TFA but love this one.

In all honesty, I don't think it's that unbelievable, taking into account the risks they've consciously took with this one.

This all buzz it's too much ado about nothing.

Following up on this, there is an individual claiming to be running the botnet attack on RT. Seems curious that, despite his narcicism and supposed prowess, he cannot make his own botnet give him likes on facebook.. unless he only has eleven fake accounts.(not likely)

I looked over bleeding cools evidence. That screenshot is legit, but I should note right below it is a 4 and 5 star review for TLJ. A 'bot war' might explain why the score has remained deadlocked at 56%.

I also expanded the search and indeed found other bad reviews on Jumanji and Downsizing. (Strangely the Jumanji reviews were scored as "Not Interested") Ferdinand came back clean.

Cinemascore, Rotten Tomatoes... Who cares? What matters to me is one thing in this case: My own opinions. I dont need support from movie critics or audience polls, i only need my own opinions about The Last Jedi.
