    Here's a discussion item for Day 3: Grogu's Age.

I make no claim on being a Star Wars 'historian' so I'd appreciate all of you who lay claim to that title to weigh in on what I'm about to say.

As I understand it The Chosen One was prophecized by the Jedi (around the time of TPM) to be coming to "bring balance to The Force." Now I am well aware that this came directly from George Lucas and he intended it to be little Anakin Skywalker. But today I came across a YouTube video on The Mandalorian where it was mentioned that if Grogu was 50 years old when he and Mando met, By my calculations, it would mean he was born around the same time as Anakin Skywalker. Sooooooooo, one has to ask....

Was the age Favreau used for Grogu (and KK, DF, and Lucasfilm approved) 'just a coincidence'? Or---as we've seen with other foreshadowing on the series---is it eventually going to lead to something big down the road? Could the Jedi have misinterpreted their prochecy??? Could the The Chosen One have been Baby Grogu all along?

What do YOU think? Crazy or a Hmmmmmm?
:) Inquiring Minds want to know.

My thinking is that it has to mean something. As far as I know, there is nothing at all in Canon about the species, only that Yoda lived to be around 900 years old. We only have Yoda, and the very little bit of Yaddle, which means that nobody has been "allowed" to create a being of the species until Grogu.

The fact that even GL himself refrained from overpopulation of them in the Galaxy, is prime evidence that there is something special about these beings. Because, c'mon, we all know that George would have been chomping at the bit to create a digital horde of little green pointy eared, funny talking yoda-like warriors, just to show off a new CGI technology.

So, to even make a Baby Yoda at all, which I have to imagine they at least asked GL's opinion, says a lot. They could have made him any age, but they chose to make him the same age as Anakin. Now could it be a misdirect? Sure. Jon and Dave both knew full and well that the hardcore fans would have made that connection before the credits rolled on that first episode. That doesn't commit them to anything, but It may be that they did that to give them options down the road.

I think it could be an interesting road to travel, and it would help to pull the PT further into this era and even into the ST era, which I think is a big objective for the Mandoverse. The ambiguity and debate about The Chosen One doesn't really need to be stirred back up, but if there is a good story to tell that gets back into that, I say bring it on.

I agree. But given how Grogu has become a world-wide phenomenon, I suspect it will surface in the future.

It seems first episode is only 35 min.
    I think it's official.

Yeah... Well honestly, I rather have a great 35 min episode than a mediocre overstuffed hour... I'd rather see them move to 10 episode seasons.

Looping back to topic... one thing that's yet to be called out in this thread is the casting choices on the show.

There's been some really great work done there to bring characters both new and known to our screens and surely has to be a major factor in the success of The Mandalorian so far.

A quick (and far from exhaustive list) of examples:

Giancarlo Esposito ...the guy has been effortless in bringing Moff Gideon's lingering menace to life.

    Emily Swallow
I've called out The Armorer elsewhere in this thread already, but given her character's dedication to the 'Mandalorians never remove their helmet' code, she has still brought real presence to this apparent anti-hero.

    Rosario Dawson
I'm prepared to admit I was wrong on this one as I was fairly sceptical when the casting was announced, thinking Dawson was perhaps too well known for the role and the character would dominate proceedings. Also, after years of Clone Wars indoctrination I wasn't sure that a live action Ahsoka was going to work - but the older and wiser Togruta has been used sparingly and well, so much so that I'm really keen to see her spin-off show now too!

    Timothy Olyphant
I've already mentioned my fondness for Cobb previously... so this needs no further justification ;)

    Ming-Na Wen
I've also got a big soft-spot for the measured bounty hunter Fennec Shand, and am really glad that her presence has extended well beyond her initial (seemingly short-lived) appearance in 'The Gunslinger'. Shand seems indebted and dedicated to Boba these days, but I feel like there's just a hint, always on the periphery, that she would absolutely end that if she no longer felt it was beneficial to her.

    Katee Sackhoff
Be honest, did any of us really think that they'd turn to the then Bo-Katan voice actor to bring the live action depiction to life too? I certainly didn't - but as a long time Sackhoff fan I'm more than happy to roll with it!

    Paul Sun-Hyung Lee
I just love this guy, so unsurprisingly, I've hugely enjoyed his recurring cameo as Carson Teva - someone you feel is one of those perpetually dependable Rebels in a Wedge Antilles style. Based on the s3 trailer, it seems like he might be getting some time outside of the flight suit too... which will be interesting!

    Pedro Pascal
How could I NOT mention this dude??

When his the show was announced and his casting publicised, I had no idea who he was. Backed by Favreau’s brilliant concept though, within his first scenes, he immediately cemented our (then unnamed) Mandalorian into pop culture history - a character as widely, if not more, recognisable in the wider public consciousness than Fett himself.

Indeed. Really great work in TM.
A great casting, at least for me, is soooooo important for the success of a show.

With first 2 seasons rewatched, I also was really impressed by Bill Burr. Loved his character and for being a stand-up comedian (that i previosuly didn't know who he was), he is so natural in the show and I loved his acting in TM (his Mando helmet jokes in season 1, hilarious).
In general I really like all the Mando casting. For me the weakest was Gina but I guess at the end was a fine character.

The voice of Emily Swallow? Wow. To fall in love with.

To compare, the casting in BOBF in general (even extras here and there) was so so bad, and is reflected in the majority of setpieces.

Andor casting? Superb from first to last.

Your post also reminds me the Willow show. The casting is really bad and the show gains nothing with it (their bad written dialogs also don't help much).

What am really waiting for is the eclectic and really interesting casting from The Acolyte. With the premise and those actors it could be a really refreshing show.

Yeah, parking all the off-set 'noise', I liked the concept behind the Cara Dune character, but for me she just wasn't charismatic or compelling enough in comparison to a bulk of the rest of the recurring cast. As good as the s2 finale was, she seemed very much overshadowed by Shand and Bo-Katan.

The first time I saw a photo (like the one above) of The Armorer, I was taken aback. Her voice had conjured up an image in my mind of a female-version of Gandalf the White from LOTR. I would have never guessed in a million years that the Armorer's voice belonged to Emily.

It will be interesting to see where Favreau takes this character in Season 3.

Cara Dune is one of my favorite characters, mostly because she's a friend Din turned to who always had his back, without necessarily expecting anything from him in return. I'll be sad not to see her again this season (or ever), at least in part for Din's sake. Everybody needs a friend like that! I expect the powers that be will have Peli fill part of that hole she'll leave, and maybe someone else fill the kick-butt part.

Early on, there had been speculation that Cara's roll on the show would be filled in by...(cue drum roll)...Hera Syndulla from Star Wars' Rebels.

Since then, we know that the role of Hera Syndulla has been cast and performed by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. If you thought Jennifer Beals was cool as Garsa Fwip in the Book of Boba Fett, just wait 'til you see live-action Hera!!!

The only question is: Will the character debut in the Ahsoka series....or could she guest-star in Season 3 of Mando? My money is on seeing her sometime over the next eight weeks. Yiiiipppppeee!!!! :)

The casting is absolutely SUPERB! I mentioned it earlier in this list, but it bears repeating, how Jon Favreau brought a new gravitas and a prestige to Star Wars. These are some "A - List " Stars that are being cast, no longer as a schtick, but as New Legacy Characters with Longevity! Esposito? The guy was just coming off a career-making run on TWO of the best TV shows ever. Olyphant? The guy is Iconic and to land him as a character that is so perfect for him... Sackoff, aside from her Iconic Sci-fi Goddess status, most people would agree that she OWNED the character of Bo-Katan. Rosario Dawson as Asokha Tano. This still amazes me and makes me so happy! I've been a big fan of hers for so long, only strengthened when she joined the Kevin Smith Universe. In my opinion, she is the major "get" for The Mandoverse. Ming- Na Wen, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Emily Swallow, are among so many recognizable, and adored actors that are so welcomed to see in roles that you can just tell they are as enamored with as the viewers are with them. And Pedro... What can you say about him? The first time I saw him on GOT, I remember thinking, THIS guy deserves a big role somewhere and he's gonna be a big Star. I couldn't be happier that happened to be in a GFFA.

And what about the one and only...
    mandalorian-greef-karga-carl-weathers-2441887.jpg

Carl Weathers has done it all as Greef Karga. He's been the shady crimeboss, the heavy, comedic relief, the backstabber, to the reluctant ally, to the redeemed hero. If this isn't the actual situation, he has made it feel and seem like he took a minor throw-away role and has made it into an established SW Legacy Character.

Bill Burr, and even moreso, Amy Sedaris, have been two of my happiest surprises in this series. I knew them both very well as talented and just truly funny people, and to see them successfully take on recurring roles in a SW show? Magical. So many hilarious comedians have had cameos: Horatio Sanz, Brian Posehn, John Leguizamo, Richard Ayoade, Jason Sudekis, Adam Pally, Taika Waititi...

Not to mention the massive list of cameos in general, my faves:
Warner Herzog, Clancy Brown, Mark Boone Jr., W. Earl Brown, NICK NOLTE!, Michael Biehn, Sasha Banks, Mark Hamill(times two), Matt Lanter, Temura Morrison...

I've said it before... Casting issues aside, Cara Dune is one of the most intriguing new characters and my hope is we will see her again. I just read some comments made by Filoni and Famuyiwa that hint that the character could, someday, find her way back into the story...

I predict that a year from now, we're going to be hyperventilating over the performances of many of the new actors we'll be seeing in this season's Mandalorian plus the Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew series.
