Ok, in that case, I’m adding Ludwig Goransson’s score!

    upload_2023-1-29_7-52-23.jpeg

When the show started I was taken aback as it was so ‘not typically Star Wars’, but the space western motif quickly became intrinsically linked to the feel of the show and arguably as iconic as the character it reflects.

What do the rest of you think? Any favourite pieces or themes from the first two seasons?

From the moment the bar's circular door opened at the start of Ep. 1and Ludwig's music began, the score of this show has been iconic.

I would imagine that most here have seen it numerous times, but in case anybody reading this hasn't, I recommend Disney+'s GALLERY The Mandalorian Season 1 which has an entire episode dedicated to how Gorransson developed the score. It's a fun watch.

As much as The Mandalorian was a game changer for Star Wars and Disney+ in general, Ludwig's score was a game changer for the music of Star Wars. The music of SW since has been incredible. If nothing else, i know that I pay more attention to the music in a show than I used to. Britell and Kiner have both done some amazing, different stuff on Andor, Tales of the Jedi and The Bad Batch, and I wonder if The Mandalorian didn't open the door.

Of course I'm a big fan of Pedro Pascal, not only in The Mandalorian but also for his voice acting appearance in the videogame Dishonored 2, as the character Paulo. He's a gangster with a hard attitude but a large sociopolitical sympathy with the working class in the city of Karnaca. I usually take his side during my repeated playthroughs of that amazing game. He's a fascinating character and Pascal does an amazing job voicing him.

Back to the Mando: Pascal's immense empathy for Gogru is palpable and amazing. He lends the character emotional vulnerability no one thought possible in a Mandalorian. However, he really makes it happen.

It was an interesting choice for them to bring on a fairly well-known actor for a role that would feature his face only sparingly. But I love Pedro as well and I'm so glad they did. Of course it could have been more of a long-term investment... now that Din has faced a couple crisis of confidence in his faith and removed his helmet on occasion, I'm curious to see if that starts happening more in S3. I don't expect drastic changes for the character but he is certainly seems to be in the middle of a transformative period.

Overall I think Pedro (and anyone else who has stood in for him) have done a tremendous job of being able to show emotion while being hidden behind a mask. And it really makes those couple scenes we get with his actual face that much more special. While it could have been anyone under that beskar to begin with, its hard to imagine anyone other than Pedro wearing it now!

Initially, I wondered why the heck the show would hire a well-known actor like Pedro---and then keep his face hidden??? That made no sense to me.

But looking back on it now and realize how inspired that decision was.

First off, Pedro is a brilliant voice actor--which was critical when you're playing a tough, silent-type, male of few words. For example, in TBoBF Ep. 6 when Ahsoka says to Mando that he shouldn't give his gift to Baby Grogo, he replies with, "As aa Mandalorian foundling, he should have this. It's his right." Pedro voice slightly cracks at the word 'right.' IMO, that was more emotionally impactful than any facial expression could have ever been.

Second, when you have a well-known actor playing the lead character, the audience imagines 'seeing' him even when his face is under a helmet.

Once again a great example of something that you would think would never work, but it ends up being a great aspect of the show. The lead actor has shown his face in three scenes over the course of 19 episodes. Crazy. He has done a masterful job of conveying his emotions and expressions with a bucket on his head the whole time.

All things considered though, I do hope he has a realization during S3 and loosens the helmet rule a good bit.

The Armorer is already lighting his butt up for taking off his helmet just once. 'He is a Mandalorian no more.' He must perform a penance now. Don't put him in an even worse situation!

You know, I always found it quite odd and a bit arrogant that she said that to him while he was holding the Darksaber. I have a feeling as a larger, more diverse group of Mandalorians get organized, her standing within the group may be challenged.

You must all thank Ryan Kyle Coogler. He recommended Ludwig Goransson to Jon Favreau. Coogler and Goransson were roommates in college. Its not who you are... its who you know... beleive that!!!

I have listened to this for hours in the background while working...

    Macaron cookies!!!

I got a big kick out of The Siege episode (S2:E4) when Grogu was put in a classroom with other kids. When a classmate refused to share one of his cookies, Grogu took matters in his own 'hand' and used The Force to take the whole bag of cookies.

It reminded me of a time when I took my granddaughter out to a buffet when she was a little tike. She kept eating a bowl of tiny marshmellows and I watched her do it. Of course -- like Grogu -- she ate too many and threw up. Oops, Bad Papa! :(

    4 weeks from today, everyone!!

For Day 28, I'm going to go with one of my newer favorite characters. This show has created an abundance of captivating "sidekicks" to the Mandalorian, and it's honestly an embarrassment of riches. When you get them all in one scene together it starts to feel like an Avengers flick.

I'm going to shine the spotlight on one I never expected to step into the Galaxy Far Far Away but am very glad that he did: Migs Mayfeld, played by Bill Burr.

I found his first appearance in Chapter 6: The Prisoner in S1 very enjoyable. Ex-Imperial sharpshooter (those exist?? ;)) turned merc, turned prisoner. And that episode as whole, man, I never really got into the horror genre and that had some similar vibes to it but I loved every bit of it. Afterwards I thought "Wow that was really cool, never expected to see Bill Burr in a dramatic role like that in Star Wars of all places. Welp see ya again never Bill!"

And then along comes S2 with Chapter 15: The Believer. Really one of my favorite episodes of the series, and only partly because its sandwiched between (imo) the best two episodes of the series yet, The Tragedy and The Rescue.

I think the most endearing thing about Mayfeld was that he is someone you never expected to have the depth that he showed in "The Believer." Not just a wise-ass, gun for hire. In the transport on the way to the Imperial facility, he challenges Din's faith, not really in a mocking way or anything but as someone who has experience with blind allegiance (to me, Mayfeld is saying "be careful with "The Way", before its too late for you.") And then in the facility when he sees one of his former superiors, oh man that scene. Operation Cinder. Mayfeld's jabs at the officer. The way Mando knows what he's about to do, silently pleads with him not to, but won't stop him because he knows that Mayfeld needs it. The way Mayfeld covers for Din afterwards saying "You did what you had to do, I never saw your face."

I really hope this isn't the last we have seen of this renegade hero!

    Excellent summation, Lord Snow.

    - Mayfield is an underrated character; one that was perfectly cast and superbly directed.

Great straw to stir the Mando's drink with.

This is pure speculation because nothing has been officially announced. But the rumor mill is saying Migs Mayfield will return in Season 3. It has been announced that Rick Famuyiwa (who wrote and directed the two episodes where Bill Barr was a guest star) directed one or two of this season's episodes so my guess is Bill Barr will be back in one of them. However, Jon Favreau wrote all of the episodes so if Migs does return Famuyiwa won't have written the script.
