Ive said it numerous times now.....October.
No way will the first wave of action figures divulge the plot.
They have kept it all tight so far, so no need to let go now.

Thursday September 10th, on NBC when the Patriots host the Steelers for the 2015 NFL opener. I'm expecting it to be after the first quarter, so around 9 pm Eastern Time.

    SPOILERS BELOW - skip ahead

Going back to my original post, I still think they're going to have to sell the audience on this new trio or heroes and make us all realize this is a new story with new characters. While the original characters might play into it (and it sound slike Harrison Ford will actually have a starring role, until the last 20 minutes at least), Luke won't appear in the film for more than a flashback cameo and the final shot, if spoilers are to be believed (and I do believe them). If they even HINT in the trailer and/or TV spots, toys, or other media that we'll be seeing his continuing adventures in December there will be riots. I'm not convinced there won't be riots anyway.

The marketing for this film is going to HAVE to walk an insanely fine line between reality and expectation. Will we be happy with X-Wings, TIE Fighters and the Falcon? If the story is there and the chemistry among the actors is real, sure. We liked the original, didn't we? I think they'r ebeing smart by giving us LOTS of Rey, Finn and Poe, then teasing the badassery of Kylo Ren and the already iconic helmet and saber (who thinks that was a bad idea now, by the way).

The films marketing is bigger than trailers. It's Celebration and ComicCon, Card Trader and mobile games. They're being pretty smart about it. Let's just hope the movie doesn't suck nerf teat.

I do remember, which is why I fervently hope TFA doesn't follow suit. The prequels spelled the movies out for us in advance. I'm hoping TFA gets one full trailer and that's it; the tv spots can just be clips from that and the previous teasers.

I'd like to see it released at D 23, but I just don't know. If they didn't show anything at Comic Con, why showcase it at a lesser known convention?

My bet is Force Friday, or thereabouts.

I was originally going to say either September 4th or sometime in October because of JJ's statement about the fall, but one of the posts above knocked something loose in my head and now I'm going to change my answer to...

    D23

    And here's why:

I think we're looking at September 4th a bit backwards. For us here, the super Star Wars fans who want all kinds of info, September 4th is a momentous occasion - a giant official leak that we've been waiting forever for. We've analyzed all the existing info, we've watched the teasers gazillions of times, we're already rooting for Rey and Finn and Kylo, and we're gonna go nuts on September 4th.

But that is definitely not what September 4th will be for the general public. September 4th will go largely unnoticed on its own. Kids walking through the toy aisles at Target and Toys 'R' Us will find new items hanging on the shelves, for characters they've barely seen glimpses of and whose names they don't even know. And they will look at them, and then move on to other toys, for characters they recognize and know about. Sure, us crazos will be scooping 'em off the shelf, but no one else will care.

That is not a good situation for Disney to be in on the day they release their new wave of Star Wars toys. Disney will want to be able to make statements like "we sold out of everything we released within minutes," because that's the kind of thing that makes investors happy.

So how do they make that happen?

Release a trailer a couple weeks before releasing the toys. Finally hype up the film to the general audience, the people who weren't the real targets of teasers 1 and 2. Showcase the new characters doing awesome stuff, like swinging lightsabers and flying starfighters, and let everyone know who these characters are and why we should love them and want to buy their action figures.

Why haven't we seen a full length trailer yet? Because the footage isn't ready? No. Because JJ hates trailers? Nope. Because they want to keep everything a secret? Not even close.

We haven't seen a full length trailer yet because it wasn't time to sell the toys yet.

We have it backwards. The purpose of the toys is not to sell the movie, the purpose of the movie is to sell the toys. Disney didn't purchase Star Wars to make tons of money off movies. That's not Disney's business model. They purchased Star Wars to make movies that will cause people to buy merchandise that will make them tons of money. It's what they did with Pixar. It's what they did with Marvel. It's what they're doing with Star Wars.

EDIT: And really, who's going to complain about JJ releasing the trailer earlier than he said they would?

My thinking about the potential for a trailer on or around Force Friday is not specifically because of the merchandise being released, but because of what Disney has said about not wanting people to get prematurely burnt out on Star Wars. They have been keeping a pretty low profile lately, but obviously on September 4th that will all change. And if that's the day they have decided it's okay to have TFA merchandise in every store, then it stands to reason that the moratorium on other forms of marketing will be lifted as well.

Of course, you can also make an argument that they released the first teaser on Black Friday to help sell toys last Christmas, and if that's true you may well be right about them releasing a trailer to build up excitement right before Force Friday. A new trailer would be better than any toy commercial.

disney needs to soon because the average moviegoers won't go see a movie even one with a big name like star wars if they don't know what it is about, especially during christmas break. ask a non star wars super fan when TFA comes out and i bet they could even tell you what month. this movie has no buzz outside of hardcore fans. and all rumors i've told my non-nerd friends about has really turned them off, they tell me they don't think it sound like a good movie, with magic lightsabers, coincidence after coincidence and too many plot points they remember from ANH.

I made the prediction that the trailer would release at Comic-Con too many times to count. I was so convinced the trailer would release then, that I literally made a bet. Obviously, I lost! The timing lined up perfectly. But it never happened. I would say, in my opinion, the next most likely date for an official trailer would be at the D23 expo in August. But, with my previous bet failing, I don't really know what to think of the next announcement anymore. And with JJ saying that they are saving the official trailer for "Later in the Fall", the release date is getting more and more unpredictable. I think it's a ridiculous thing to think that no new footage will be shown at the D23 expo. Whether it's a trailer or not, that is yet to be seen. It's not common for movie clips to be shown before an official trailer. But, then again, I thought the same thing around Comic-Con. And look what happened. The sooner something official is released the better! I'm dying for concrete footage! The movie comes out in five months, I'm tired of being teased.

dude September is totally fall (or autumn as it is elsewhere known) in the Northern Hemisphere. Spring in the southern ;)

To quote wiki: "Meteorologists (and most of the temperate countries in the southern hemisphere)[3] use a definition based on months, with autumn being September, October and November in the northern hemisphere,[4] and March, April and May in the southern hemisphere."

    Source

Don't worry, this actually supports the idea of Force Friday as the trailer release day :)

Really? Wow. I mean, there is a new-age climate science theory here in Australia that we actually have 5 seasons - an extra spring between spring and winter. In the "outback" they have two - wet (summer + spring) and dry (autumn + winter).

I can't believe there is a debate... nerdrage has reached a new level. You have my apologies Sir Trap.

    Two possibilities imo.

D23 - Big event, Disney is trying to expand the reach of their expo, what better way than dropping the trailer and there are also some rumours that the poster is coming to D23.

Force Friday - Huge marketing day, Aftermath comes out, why not launch the trailer with Aftermath to celebrate the beginning of the "Journey to TFA" and generate better book sales. I could easily see a marketing campaign like "Now you have seen the trailer, read about the story between ROTJ and TFA in Aftermath" :D

I'm not a marketing expert, but i really see how getting good positive buzz going, then killing all that momentum and hoping they pick it back up months later, is a good strategy. I've never seen what is supposed to be a big blockbuster promoted like this. Without a trailer at d23 or at least official word of one for force friday, they are going to start losing even die hard fans.
