This is one of the key reasons why I think Luke has been force drained...

Why does Snoke fear the return of Luke in the first place? They've already seemingly defeated him in some way. Kyle Ren wants to find Luke making it seem he feels confident in destroying him.So why fear Luke's return?

"If Skywalker returns...THE NEW JEDI WILL RISE".

What Snoke fears is Luke's knowledge. Only Luke can create a new Jedi Order and worse for Snoke is that Luke will now have new knowledge about how to defeat Snoke.

My view is that Luke sought out the first Jedi temple to find the knowledge that could help him counter Snoke and his ancient weapon and/or with force draining technique. The Jedi of old once had to do that but this knowledge has been lost. Luke has now found it and Snoke must stop this knowledge from being passed on.

Even if Luke hasn't found some great new knowledge the idea works as if Luke creates a new Jedi order, Snoke won't have an inside man anymore to destroy it. Luke could create a new order that will be too much for Snoke.

I think on a story level, the film will be much more exciting if Luke is vulnerable (like Snoke) and relies upon his apprentice (like Snoke) to do the heavy lifting. Luke and Snoke have the knowledge. Rey and Ren have the power.

We of course won't know whether you are on to something until VIII is released but I have to give you props as your theory is very well thought out. If it wasn't for the mention in Aftermath I'd say your idea is crazy. However knowing how the story group uses what seem to be throw away lines to tie in other parts of the story I'd say your theory is plausible.

On a different note, I like the idea of the Acolytes of the Beyond being tied to the Knights of Ren. Keep speculating.

Ha, unfortunately I've had many past theories that have fallen by the way side - we'll see if this one suffers a similar fate! I guess the thing for me is that I'd prefer Luke to not be more powerful than everyone else. He should be vulnerable so not to overshadow Rey or make the story dull.

The acolytes = kor idea also came from Aftermath. In that one of the acolytes said something like "they weren't violent yet". It just makes sense to me that they're Vader worshippers and perhaps protectors of his bloodline or that they want to, as Ren says, finish what he started.

A while back there was a fan theory going on about Luke being so powerful he unintentionally destroys his home world Tatooine. That would explain why Luke is hiding; becasue both the Resistance and First Order can use him as a weapon.

While I think this theory is far-fetched, I wouldn't mind seeing something like this play out in VIII. After all, was it not Vader who said in Episode IV: "the power of this battle station is insignificant compared to ther power of the force." (Paraphrase.)

This would limit the chances to use Luke in the ST, because if he is so powerful, he either dies early on or has to lose his power in an incident.

I'm wondering if idea actually comes from either:

    1) What the weapon did to Jakku a thousand years ago.
    2) Rey actually causing a seismic event/having uncontrollable force power.
    3) "The power of this battle station is insignificant compared to ther power of the force" = An actual Force weapon that goes further than just destroying planets.

I doubt it, that Luke is the most powerful force user and they need to drain him or diable him in a story. He wasn't really well trained nor a big warrior or lighsaber master, he won with his soft skills and by knowledge. So maybe the exploration is a direct result of Yoda and his teachings in the "who is stronger" dialog in ESB. Since we know that the force itself awoke it is also interesting what it means in Luke's case, we already have seen a bigger force expression in Leia, Kylo and Rey. To drain his force ability and let him go, to discover new "back to the roots" things doesn't make sense in my book.

It's not so much about swordsmanship but command of the Force.
Luke might have defeated the Sith with love but he was a strong warrior. He is also shown in the new canon to continue in these ways by going on missions that involve him duelling and fighting. It would be odd for the person with the greatest Force potential ever known to not be the most powerful Force user by this stage. It's certainly what everyone expects of him. I think people confuse Luke doing what was right in the moment in ROTJ with him now being some sort of pacifist. That he is not, or rather wasn't directly after ROTJ. He was still very much involved in the fight against the Empire, and if those images of his padawans' lightsabers is real, then he was obviously passing on the Jedi warrior element.

And so for me, Luke should be very powerful by now so in order for Rey to go on the hero journey she must not always have Luke around to hold her hand. He must have a weakness. He must be vulnerable. And a good few things are pointing towards him having his power drained, for starters:

    - The Aftermath reference
    - The radiation interference in his last communication with Leia
    - Snoke's apparent ability to survive despite having fatal looking injuries
    - Snoke's fear of Luke returning (despite already defeating him) and Ren's desire to find and likely fight Luke
    - An ancient Sith site on Jakku that likely links into the "death" of that planet

That is not how he was portayed, we have seen btter warriors in the clone wars, which led to their downfall and made Yoda a pacifist. Luke couldn't barely get his lightsaber out of the snow and was probably bested by Vader, who is only half the man he used to be, pun intended.
That is yet to be explored, it would be unusual for a David vs. Goliath story to have a stronger David, wait and see.
Maybe, but what his absence in TFA does is quite intriguing, it raises our interst in Luke, something the EU never accomplished, even I wonder what he can do with the awakened force. But we have to go by the story that was intended by Lucas and look how he was fleshed out and that makes him not so special, just a new hope, but not the only one and not more powerful then anything we saw in the prequels. Jedi and Dark siders are not superheros, it takes just a couple of blasters to kill them according to RotSith.

That was one lightsaber, and it was not in the final film, only an early iteration for the trailer. Even if a lightsaber is only a anachronistic symbol, wars don't make you great. Lucas described it not as an actual weapon but more as a defensive weapon, not really practical in this time. Fan perspective is different then story perspective.

    He is actually already.

Luke defeats Vader in rotj. Advances in choreography and effects meant the Jedi seemed better in the pt. But Luke beating Vader is a big deal. That'll become clearer throughout Rebels and with RO.

Perhaps... just perhaps this weapon that is used on Luke to drain his power is first referred to as being used by Palpatine with this quote to Anakin.. If there is indeed a weapon of such power.

" He became so powerful, the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power...which, eventually of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew. Then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death...but not himself." -SW-ROtS

Someone should start a new thread addressing the whereabouts of Luke after VI. In Aftermath he disappeared and he did the same before VII.

This would spark a wonderful discussion. In Aftermath: Life Debt Leia mentions that Luke was in the process of training her as a Jedi like himself until one day he disappeared suddenly and without warning. What could be so important?

This for me ties in with Rey.
Now it could be Luke as the father skulking off to his secret family or (and I think more likely), it is Luke learning about Rey - an incredibly powerful Force user that has direct links with whatever was buried by the Sith on Jakku.

I think it is clear that this trilogy is about legacy - but perhaps it is more about saving the legacy of the Skywalker family?
If Luke has discovered this Force weapon and/or old Sith draining technique he'd know of the danger Snoke poses . As well as this he would be learning about Rey and sensing her destiny and so perhaps Luke's relationship with Rey is all about ensuring the survival of the Jedi Order? That is Luke's legacy. Alongside this, they must save Ben Solo, as his demise because of the shadow of Vader will forever ruin Anakin Skywalker's legacy.

I believe that after the events of the Battle of Jakku, Luke was contacted by Rey's parents because of their dangerously powerful child. Luke visited Rey, perhaps blocked her power somewhat and then discovered what Palpatine buried/created on Jakku - which is what bestowed upon Rey her awesome powers somehow. He set out to stop Snoke at all costs because he knew the danger this Sith secret power posed. This is why he was always away - and why he sought out the First Jedi Temple. At some point later, Luke goes back to Jakku but Rey and her parents are long gone and as Luke put a block on Rey's power himself, it prevented him from reaching out to her.

Then Ben Solo turns bad and he and Snoke set up a trap for Luke. Luke takes the bait and ends up being Force drained by Snoke but manages to escape. Ren destroys Luke's Order and then Luke has no option but to flee to safety to ensure that he is around to train a new generation of Jedi - he believes at some point Rey will seek him out. It is her destiny.

This way, it remains all about the Skywalker family. But rather than Rey just being another one of them, instead she is their saviour.

This is a very good theory. However, there is one thing that troubles me: Rey is saving the Skywalker lineage, but there are no new Skywalkers to carry the torch into the future. (Arguably, Kylo Ren is a "skywalker" by blood but he may not survive the trilogy if he is as bad and unredeemable as JJ recently suggested.) So without Rey as a Skywalker, what does this leave us once Luke and Leia pass away? Is the end of this trilogy truly the end of the Skywalker era? Will fans accept the idea of a episodic chronology without Skywalkers If Disney continues with episodes 10-12? A part of me really wants to see Rey as a Skywalker, no matter how far fetched and unlikely it is. Because it symbolically shows the torch is being passed down from family member to family member. (Plus, I love the fan art portraying Amidala, Leia, and Rey together...)

I've always felt that this trilogy needs to see the end of the Skywalker story. And I'd imagine in order to create new original stories after this trilogy, Disney would likely want the same. That doesn't mean the Skywalker's all have to die - just that there can't be anymore Skywalker kids. So Ren likely dies but Luke and Leia can live on. If the Skywalker's survive this and their kids can have kids then they will be at the centre of every Star Wars film to come. Their family is one of immense power that means they will always be centre stage. And what is more, surely it is better to create new original stories with a new dynamic? Some things sound or look nice but they don't necessarily make great stories. I'd much prefer to see the Skywalker bow out at the end of this one, their story completed and their legacies maintained.

I think people are reading too much into it and creating their own fiction.

Could it simply be the fact that he has, to an extent, given up? He tried to rebuild the Jedi order and failed, betrayed by his own nephew. It's not that his powers have been drained but rather his spirit has been broken. He has lost his faith.

i guess the key question at the base of both Rey's parentage and Ben's possible redemption is whether or not this trilogy is still fully about the Skywalkers or not.

The sky is the limit for Disney in terms of movies/trilogy's after this ST.. so are they starting from here? or are they completing the Skywalker story and plan to put a full stop after episode 9? and i don't mean stop making star wars films after ep9.. i simply mean will they start something completely fresh? as in a different time frame.... 1000 yrs forward for example?

whilst i may be sitting firmly in the Rey Skywalker camp, i actually like how many people are calling for something new and fresh and it's something i want as well... but i don't think i'm quite ready yet.

it's firmly a generational story still for me. i just love star wars, so i'm sure i'll be happy no matter which way it all goes.. but i can't stop myself from thinking that we're still watching a story about the Skywalkers... and it would all feel a little bit incomplete to me if Luke didn't have children.
