It was an unforseen outcome, both Kylo and Luke have different views on the same event, yet both are right. It caused Kylo to turn, but as opposed to Luke, Kylo did strike. Kylo had a choice too.

He changed his mind because of Rey and Yoda. That's why he shows up at the end. He had resolved his inner conflicts and knew how all of it should end.

No Luke straight up lied to Rey and only when confronted did he tell her the truth which was much closer to what Kylo told her.l than what Luke said by acting all inncoent.

Luke was acting completely innocent. He had his weapon out, Kylo acted in self defence no jury in the galaxy would convict him. He felt Luke’s intent via the force and that was the catalyst for his downfall.

That is sad. I hope that in time you'd come to appreciate it. If not, that's okay.

They didn’t even tell him anything new. It was so obvious. It’s as if Luke learned nothing all those years. He was completely out of character and Mark Hamill who embodies the character agrees completely.

    You mean like Ben lied?

But Luke's intent had shifted. He realized that he couldn't. Kylo saw Luke standing there with the lightsabre. If he could feel Luke's intention through the force, he wouldn't have struck :)

I take your point: the guy who refused to kill his space Hitler dad, with the fate of galaxy at stake - because there was still good in him, was prepared to murder his nephew because he MIGHT do something evil - isn’t entirely consistent with the character. That’s a pretty big pill we’re being asked to swallow there.
Well he did immediately go on a killing spree right after that though. So Luke’s concern certainly wasn’t baseless. He just clumsily gave him that extra nudge. Meh, it is what it is.

Ohhhh, he did say that he loved how it all turned out at the end, that he should have trusted Rian in the first place, and that TLJ is the best Star Wars movie since ESB. Hamill loves this movie! :p

It doesn’t work that way. You can’t put toothpaste back in the tube.

If I had ever intended to kill you and you knew this would you ever trust me again not to attempt to kill you again in the future? Perhaps in a more secretive way when you least expect it.

How could Ben trust Luke again after sensing killing intent from his family and master? It’s the ultimate betrayal.

So you never think about doing one thing and change your mind after considering the consequences and other options? That's what humans do. Difficult choices always come with internal conflict. If you are a human who only makes snap decisions without prior consideration or thought, you're hardly human.

I never thought about killing anyone no. Let alone my family and student.

Especially worse if I knew my family member knew I thought about killing them while they slept trusting me.

Firstly, you're right. One of the themes in TLJ is about the inevitable disappointment that comes with meeting your heroes. Rey meeting a grumpy, unhelpful Luke. Rose meeting a fleeing Finn.

But you're wrong about Poe meeting Holdo. That dynamic is all about men not taking women seriously in the workplace, especially women who look a certain way. (Seriously, a franchise that boasts respected female leaders like Leia Organa, Mon Mothma, and Padme Amidala felt the need to incorporate that lesson into one of its movies. But I digress.)

Since you obviously know all about movie storytelling, it'd be silly of me to bring up the three-act structure: setup, conflict, and resolution. The only reason why I bother to bring it up is because it's pivotal to my post.

As you undoubtedly know, the decisions or actions of the central protagonist guide us through a movie's three acts. In TFA, Rey leads us from the first act to the second when she leaves Jakku to help BB8. She then leads us from the second act to the third when she's abducted by Kylo Ren. TFA is flawed, and its narrative unfocused at times, but its basic story structure is solid, and it's central protagonist is crystal clear. But, as smart as you are, I'm sure you know this.

Maybe I lack your intellectual gifts, because I have no idea who the central protagonist of TLJ is supposed to be. It should be Rey, but she's so far removed from the central storyline that she can't be. She spends the first half of the movie on the island. Then, in the middle of the second act, she makes a decision to leave. Her epic confrontation with Kylo Ren and Snoke occurs at the end of the second act, which leaves her with almost nothing to do in the third. Curiously, despite Lucasfilm's repeated declarations that this trilogy is all about the newbies, the big moment in the final act goes to ... Luke Skywalker. It's akin to having Luke hang out in the Falcon while Yoda duels Vader in Empire Strikes Back.

So my biggest problem with this movie isn't the themes it chooses to explore (seriously, most of these ham-fisted themes could be identified by a five-year-old). Nor is my biggest problem with its characterizations (who hasn't thought about stabbing a relative in the back while they're sleeping?). Nor is my biggest problem with the ridiculous illogicalities and inconsistencies (star destroyers can intercept fleeing ships, I saw it in Rogue One). No, my biggest problem with TLJ is its flawed structure and lack of a clear central protagonist.

I don't hate this movie like some, but I can certainly understand -- and respect -- why they might. This movie is certainly not "pure genius". But don't fret. I trust that you, in time, will come to understand.

I imagine the justification is attributed to Johnson’s assertion that Kylo and Rey are co-protagonists of this story. They’re each on their individual inverted arcs. The climactic ‘showdown’ then was a part of Ben Solo’s story, not necessarily Luke’s. That’s my stab anyhow.

But what if you would see in the mind of your student that he'd do things like Hitler.

Holdo/Poe: that is one reading, though this particular relationship is not centred around gender. Some people feminist and anti-feminist have argued that it is and have therefore stamped a discours onto this movie's narrative structure that really isn't there in the first place. Poe considers himself to be Leia's second. That's how he is being presented in TFA and in the opening of TLJ. When Leia falls away, he, and the audience, think that it now Poe's role to succeed her. He is however confronted by someone he doesn't know but has heared stories about, Holdo. But Holdo disappoints, for Poe she does not live up to the stories he has heard. She runs from a fight, he wants to engage. He needs to learn that enaging directly is not the best way forward in an assymetrical fight in which the odds are stacked heavily against the resistance. This has nothing to do with female leadership or gender differences, but a specific aspect of Poe's character. He's bold and agressive, but he needs to become more cunning. Saying that either of each is a reflection of male or female qualities is sexist.

Protagonists: In my opinion, the movie is structured around two protagonist: Kylo and Rey. The others, Poe, Finn, Leia, Luke are satellites. Just as Yoda, Han, Leia, the droids and Vader were satellites in Empire. The structure is unusual. You might not like it. But is not by extension "bad" or "flawed". Even though Luke has a big role in the end. That ending is ultimately about Rey and Kylo. Luke dying to haunt Kylo. Luke revealing that Rey is the last Jedi. Rey saving the resistance. Rey shutting the door to Kylo. The reveal that Rey has the books and feeling why and how Luke passed away. A boy, a nobody like Rey, dreaming about the future. I really like the equal protagonist/antagonist structure and I like how the satellites are woven into the story. I think its genius film-making and storytelling.

You've got issues, man. My previous posts are well-written opinions and not the casual "wee wee wee" you see. But if it makes you feel better, go for it! :p

And I'm actually 100% right when I say that we have to wait a few weeks before we can make a final judgement on how the movie performs. So get off that high horse of yours now.

You're right! Mocking a righteous fool like you mercilessly because of pure idiocy did make me better! Thanks for the open offer!

If marvel films can make a sh*t ton of money and TLJ has already opened above most of them, you're already 3/4 of the way to "I'm wrong" ville. Better get a dunce hat ready! You'll need it in a few weeks.

I have no high horse. Only coconuts! Come squire!
Damn right I do not need one!

He did whats called force illusion. It's not that big of a deal. Snoke was more powerful in the ways of the force by far. Let me ask you this. If you put Luke in the room with Snoke, who walks out of that room?

I seriously don't like marvel movies, but I can imagine why their fans absolutely love them. Some of them are quite well crafted movies and get well deserved applause by some critics. I just don't feel anything. I watch them once, and then never again.
