Yeah, I think he’s probably at the stage of doing some early treatments (which will probably be ~10 pages per entry into the trilogy) at this point.

Seeing as he’s only currently being set up to direct and write the first film (presumably serving also as a producer and as an overseer of the trilogy alongside the Story Group), I wouldn’t be surprised if it starts filming by summer 2019 to be honest (if they want to move on that fast, which I don’t think they should).

Of course, this all depends on how quickly Disney and Lucasfilm want to move on from the ST to the RJT, so perhaps we won’t hear much of anything about it until until the early 20s (now that was weird to type!), realistically?

 

It is weird. We're just three years away from the twenties to begin...

 

Weirder yet, it could be the first decade with a Star Wars film released annually throughout.

Rian Johnson: "One of the first things that [Lucasfilm President] Kathleen Kennedy told me when she asked me if I'd be interested in doing this [eighth episode movie] was that the lead character was a girl named Rey." "I was instantly into that; it just felt right. Leia was the first female figure that girls and women could look up to, and seeing how much it meant to them, (late actress) Carrie Fisher was very conscious of that and held that with her. She felt a responsibility to make Leia great." "In this movie, there are a lot of really interesting strong and powerful and weak and conflicted and good and bad female characters. I got to work with a lot of amazing actresses, like Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma. There are a lot of kick-ass women in this movie, which is pretty great." "I had had a couple of general meetings with Kathy Kennedy after she stepped in and started running Lucasfilm. But they were very general meetings, and I didn't think that I was actually in the running for anything. And then at some point, I came in for what I thought was another just how-you-been, what-are-you-working-on meeting, and she felt whether I would be interested in doing this." "I took some time to think about it. It was a big decision, actually. On one hand, it was something that I felt was a dream offer. On the other hand, it was a big life-changing deal. Wow, excellent interview. Hopefully his closing words about Finn will do something to raise confidence that he’ll definitely be progressed as a character around here.

Cool! It makes me really happy that he emphasised he's doing the outline for the whole trilogy even if he's not directing/writing all 3.

 

Rian on the length of TLJ, deleted scenes and "extended cuts:"

 

Him saying the deleted scenes are some of his favourite is... kind of unfortunate. I hope we will see it all on Blu-ray. Btw. it's interesting that they're already working on the Blu-ray content. First commentary, now he's talking about reviewing the deleted scenes. I didn't know they do some of this stuff so early.

One thing I really, really hope for is that LFL allows Rian to publish the screenplay (for those who don't realise, he did that for all his previous films). The TFA one leaked anyway and it didn't hurt (I think) so it would be really nice if they let him.

 

It is very easy to like Rian. He truly seems like a giant fan of this whole mythos.

 

The process of editing a film has been frequently compared to killing your babies, so it's not really that weird that his favourite scenes might have got cut.

Also, a fantastic comment by Rian himself on that issue.

 

I have wished someone would ask to compare it to R1's trailers and how much of what we have seen in the trailers have been cut from the feature film.
