I think a lot of people were wanting Luke the legend and not Luke the person. The whole movie was about stripping away the romanticized Star Wars concepts that we've had brewing in our heads for years. It boils it down to a real and human level. This is where the big divide is coming from I think. A lot of people feel betrayed because it didn't play into a romantic view of Star Wars. This was the movie that Star Wars needed. I thought it was going to be more of a generic and safe film like TFA was. I like TFA and understand why it was made the way it was. It was a reboot for a new generation and it needed to be safe and familiar. But I'm so glad that TLJ didn't go down that road.

The Empire was smaller than the Republic and I assume the New Republic was smaller than the Empire. After this conflict does the galaxy even want a centralized government anymore?

The problem with Reedeming him is there is no real other villain. We could redeem Vader because there was still the emperor. So redeeming Kylo leaves the story with no primary villain. Sorry Hux is not scary enough. Now, I could see hux surviving and escaping with the remnants of the first order after Kylos death, but the death of Snoke, ends the possibility of a Kylo redemption. For the record, Kylo was unredeemable 1) when he kills Han, and 2) when luke tell Leia he can't be saved and leia states as much. if the mother gives up, all hope is truly lost.

probably not. my biggest hope for the ST was that the FO and the NR/Resistance could find a compromise.
right now the FO feels like a total wash, but maybe the principle of compromise can survive nonetheless?
no one loves Kylo Ren. and no one should!

Leia said her son was lost, but Luke reminded her that no one is ever lost.
both Leia and Luke love Ben. and Luke is going to come back for him--it's not over yet.
and Rey loves Ben in spite of herself. she rejected him and he's pitching a fit over it, but she still saw his future and she will believe in him again--just as soon as he finds his way to believing in himself.

but really, in the end, the only person who needs to love Ben is Ben.
no one is going to do that work for him.

Luke's last line suggests it wouldn't be the last time, but I guess that's up to JJ.

Yep being a force ghost has it's returning advantages but your right, it's JJ's call.

That's a pretty wise statement - JJ should use it for EP IX ;).
I think there could be a third possibility (besides Kylo dying or being redeemed): A true balance of the force, with both sides existing in their own little corner of the galaxy and accepting each other. A sort of armistice. It might work with the First Order retreating into the unknown regions and some symbolic act, like returning the brainwashed stormtroopers to their families or something (I'm actually just improvising here ;)). The reason for this could be Kylo and Rey accepting that they don't want to kill each other... they wouldn't have to be an item in the end, but the possibility could be heavily implied, provided Kylo gets his sh*t together.
I'm not saying I'm all for this, just putting the possibility out there :p. Actually I'd prefer a definite end to the Skywalker linage and Kylo dying in IX.

    First post:

I was shocked but i loved the movie.

I loved that the Poe, Finn, Rey have to learn to sift the lessons of their elders; they have to learn strategy and not just immediate tactics; they have to learn that you shouldn’t sacrifice life for short term gain, To learn what is a short term gain versus what is worth dying for. That failure is the mother of success.

(BTW: I don’t ship but it seems they have all pairings a moment.)

The Legends of Luke Skywalker book is very much a sly manifesto of the themes of Last Jedi.

It covers that there is more than one path to the force, it covers the downtrodden and neglected finding the hope in themselves and their friends, the wisdom of elders and the need for youth to hear lots of stories and using Legends not as a crutch but advice inspiration.

Thanks, oldbert! Good to see you here.
I also loved the part where BB8 shoots the coins back- it reminded me of something R2D2 would do. He's spunky. Also when Poe greets him and rubs his little round "belly" like you would a favorite dog. Those two together are just plain cute.

Also, when Poe & Rey meet- we're all a little shocked to realize that yep, even through all of the many adventures starting all the way back on Jakku they indeed have never met before! "Hi, I'm Rey." "I'm Poe." But the way they look at each other, you know they both are thinking "Wow, have I heard a lot of really awesome things about you."

Lots of questions I have formulated like...

Now that Kylo is a leader will he have an apprentice? Will he replace the praetorian guards with the knights of ren?

Love this film. My favorite next after Empire.

Question about old Greenie (Luke's lightsaber hilt ;);)).. Was it the hero version or the V2 ?? Also I think it looked more silvery in one scene than the hero actually looks ;);)..

Just finished my second viewing. The first viewing was so stressful. I could just sit back and enjoy the ride this time and it's just a fantastic film. It's full of heart, fun, and surprising moments. I can't wait to see what JJ does to finish out this trilogy. As much as I love Luke the trilogy really needs to focus on our new band of heroes in the final film.

I hope they just robe & mask up. The guards in red served their purpose in giving us a classic encounter to remember,

We still haven't seen Kylo and the Knights in the rain. from Rey's vision. JJ could use that for episode IX.

    Hi All,

I'm new on board and and this is my take:

I was 13 yrs old in 1977 & ANH blew my mind and here I am still going strong. I'd also like to say that for me the imagery & graphics of the original Tom Jung "A" movie poster was as gob smacking original and evoking as the movie itself. I had been a Star Trek fan too and watched Time Tunnel, Lost in Space, Land of the Giants, Space 1999 etc but ANH was like nothing else. Did I mention that ANH blew my mind? I think that's what's happened last night during the premiere and Thursday's fan preview night of Last Jedi. I've seen it twice and I want to see it again despite some issues I have with the movie. I saw Seeker's review while searching for fan reactions and why I decided to join. I think the slippery bigger picture being presented by Rian Johnson is somewhat like Rey looking at that infinity of mirrors.. Luke & Kylo were both right and it's not 1977 anymore as much I want that vibe to continue. Despite it's flaws, The Last Jedi is defining and in my opinion superior to The Force Awakens in the same way Empire carried on from ANH but in a more grievous way. In Episode VII I watched Han die and now Luke's flesh is gone and Gail Ackbar was sucked out into space.. 1977 is dying off but Star Wars isn't. I think some characters were marginalized on purpose because they aren't the future. I think I read that Rian Johnson said we only need to know what he is showing us about Snoke is all we need to know.. I would have preferred knowing more but in the end I get it.. I think I'm suffering from a little shock & awe at the moment and it's taking time to process but the stable boy at the end is the whole point..

Definitely. I'm so excited for that scene and Knights of Ren! They’re gonna kick butt and take names!

Also curious of context of field full of dead bodies and if Kylo is advancing towards Rey.
