TLJ is just loaded with classic cinema.
I'd think Lucas probably loves it for that alone

I really loved the new characters. And I really don't understand why so much hate on them.
D.J, Rose and Holdo (my favorite) are all great.

I think a lot of people have a hard time distinguishing between ‘poorly written characters’ and ‘intentionally flawed characters’.

@RoyleRancor: you mentioned elsewhere i think about people who can't agree on what even happened in this film and i see a lot of that too.
i know the first time i saw TLJ, i was so emotionally overwrought i couldn't think straight. i had to see it twice to even make sense of Luke's arc.

but even in the 24 hours of turmoil after that first viewing, i knew i had seen something incredible and i still loved it, warts and all.

my no. 1 problem with TLJ is that at the end i just wanted more.
not a terrible thing for middle saga film that intentionally has no conclusion. : D

Personally, I loved TLJ from the first viewing and left the theater in a kind of blissful daze. Star Wars flicks are rarely, objectively & movie-craft speaking, fantastic movies when watched without SW goggles -- the formula being too stiltedly fairy-tale'y and literal to smoothly fit the movie format -- but leaving TLJ I knew I'd seen a truly great and artistically significant film, full of emotion and artful storytelling. It is just so damn good! With every consecutive viewing it grows even stronger, and RJ has truly produced a work of art with this one :D

Last time I watched it I tried hard to spot things that I'd like to change with TLJ if given a chance; here's the two minor things I ended up with:
    1) The scene where a FO officer states that according to their analysis, the Resistance fleet will soon run out of fuel. Instead of "our analysis", the line here could have been "our spies/mole", indicating there's a FO spy within the Resistance ranks. This would inform the Holdo-Poe conflict, spelling out a reason for distrust. The film doesn't need this, but it would explain things clearly for those viewers who struggles with the conflict, AND it would add another level of heightened tensions.
    2) In the scene when Rey arrives at the FO fleet to surrender to Kylo & Snoke, instead of floating gently into the hangar I would've preferred to see the coffin-escape pod float gently past the viewport at an angle, only to be arrested mid-flight (by tractorbeams) and pulled violently into the hangar. Just a little missed opportunity for drama.

So yeah, not big things at all, but those are the only two "issues" that I managed to construe when watching TLJ :)

The Last Jedi is, in my opinion, the most auteur influenced big budget franchise film outside of Bay-Formers; which is to also say it is the BEST auteur big budget franchise film in recent memory. Maybe since T2 or Lost World.

    1. i honestly don't get the Holdo/Poe issue. since when in the history of anything has an admiral of the fleet answered to or owed explanations to not only just a lowly captain, but a recently demoted one? ever. Poe was way out of line demanding answers, first of all, and then proved her point by mutinying and basically ruining the plan and costing countless more lives (yes, it's absolutely Poe's fault that the Supremacy knew they were evacuating and went after them.)

    2. i like that she coasts in. Ren Ben basically rolls out the red carpet for her, only to throw her in handcuffs. it also serves to show how naive and deluded Rey is about the whole thing. she's so happy to see him until she grasps that she's just delivered herself to an enemy she's not entirely sure she knows.

that said, i would never object to more drama where the films can crank it up. XD

There's OBVIOUS issues some people have with the Poe/Holdo interactions that I really don't feel like getting into. But the main issue most have is that we are just so trained to see the heroes rush in guns-a-blazing that seeing accountability and a chain of command is a shell shock.

i get that the theme of failure is a hard sell; heroes are always right and they're supposed to win.
except when the whole point of a movie is that they're completely wrong and they lose.

the heroes of the Resistance's big "win" in this movie is that they wise up and manage to escape with their lives (to fight another day).
defeating the FO and earning their medals comes in IX. except for Chewie because wookiees are apparently second class citizens.
(if Abrams doesn't give Chewie a medal at the end of IX, i will riot). XD

I hope the final scene is just Chewie opening a drawer in the Falcon and showing he saved all of Luke and Han's medals over the years lol.

It's definitely a hard sell to tell everyone "Hey your heroes are gonna fail and it sucks" but that's what makes the comeback so good.

i keep seeing people say: there's nothing to wonder about, nothing to anticipate, but i couldn't be more excited to see how the Resistance comes back from this.
can't wait to see Finn leading armies, Poe commanding squadrons, what the heck Rey and Ren Ben have to say to one another when they meet again, how and where Luke's ghost might pop up, whether Leia will be alive or just a memory, whether there's anything of the FO that can be salvaged, is Hux going to self-destruct? will he try to overthrow Ren? will Ben make it out alive? will Rey be a Jedi, or start a new order....

i totally get not wanting to engage with a text that you don't like (i couldn't care less what happens in the next Avengers movie), but it's disingenuous to say there's absolutely nothing there that fans can get excited about.

Finn leads a Trooper insurrection. An idea I threw out awhile ago and a bunch didn't like but seem to have come around on.
Hux holds his own mutiny, fracturing the FO into two separate, competing entities. That'd be something new.
Rey could reform the Jedi as first intended under the guidance of Luke.

    So much new to explore....

Since you brought it up. Yes I am excited for Avengers Endgame, but just because they are fun. Not much more. I enjoyed Avengers Infinity War, but 5 minutes after it was over it came to me that because the dusted so many people, we know will return, in one event that we know they will all be brought back. So the drama was gone. Sure some may die again after the heroes win, but the drama of everyone dying in IW turns out to be nothing.

Back to the regularly scheduled program.

Watched TLJ for probably the hundredth time last night, love it more with every viewing. Has the most "rewatchability" of any SW film IMO. There are so many details, you pick up on new things each time, which only adds to the excitement. Best SW since Empire.

I could be mistaken, but when Luke gets the 'force back' the circle image thing 'activates' for lack of a better word. I noticed that on my third viewing. Also, that Rey and Kylo form the Yin Yang symbol in the fight scene.

You are not the only one who thought that, but it doesn't really - the water in the basin just ripples by the force of the Force. :D

I didn't notice that. Must watch it again! haha

TLJ is the SW movie with more details ever. I would like to know if anyone has made a list with all of them.
