I just listened to the Steele Wars podcast where he interviews Anthony Breznican. Breznican thinks the next trailer will be in October. I hope he's wrong and it comes sooner, but I have a feeling he has a pretty strong concept of Lucasfilm's "schedule."

    We'll see.

I think Breznican is right. Remember how it went with TFA? A lot of time went by between the second teaser and the first full trailer.
:) If it comes earlier than October i suspect last week of september-ish

Anything Phasma, pretending Luke might be in the movie, having Snoke narrate the first teaser, and showing Starkiller like it was going to be a conventional battle, that Sherpa guy showing up at SDCC and in early photos when JJ knew he had literally zero importance, and the sherrif or constable whatever on Jakku (also an idiotic head fake until April) served only to mislead the viewer.

You are not everyone. I am not everyone. They wouldn't make trailers if they didn't need them.

You're describing fans of SW, which is, as you allude to, short for "fanatic." Lots of people aren't fans, but they like SW. Some of people like going to movies on Christmas night. Some people went to see TFA because of their boyfriend or friends wanted to go. Some liked the trailers.

I know people who LOVE SW but have no idea that TLJ is coming out. They don't log onto Youtube looking for the D23 BTS video or scour makingstarwars or screenrant. They have wives and kids and demanding jobs. They aren't constantly thinking about the ending of a movie they saw once or twice 20 months ago....

Disney paid gobs of money for LFL and need every SW entry to be a $1B hit. You can have a decent hit with just rabid fans, but not a massive hit like Avengers or Force Awakens.

You need to advertise the product you're selling by illustrating what it does to be worth your money. I don't watch Rebels nor did I watch Clone Wars. I'm not going to SWC and I'm too old for toys or lightsabers or most of the merchandise.

Yes a lot of the people on here would kick an old lady down a flight of stairs for tickets to TLJ (I'd do it twice if the old lady were KK), but so many people have so much else going on that they need some way to be told or at least reminded that TLJ is coming and coming in Dec. Most people can't recall a trailer or an article about the trailer from April, if only because NUCLEAR WAR became more likely and the US President and his campaign are being investigated for collusion with Russia, an investigation headed by arguably the finest law enforcement official in US history (end of political reasons). Fantasy Football, arguably more popular than SW, is ramping up.

To make a billion dollars you must release trailers, tv ads, and trot out the cast on the late night talk show circuit.

This is a common pattern I've noticed lately for movies and games. Waiting until near the end to announce the big things and giving fans tiny teasers.

I am fairly certain that Disney will use its ESPN property to showcase its Star Wars property. It's the smartest use of their money to have synergy in cross-product promotion. Plus, there is a track record of Disney doing just this with its Star Wars films. Thus, I am convinced they'll premier the trailer during MNF. The MNF matchups between now and the end of October, the most likely window for a trailer premier, as as follows (together with commentary on team talent/preseason power rankings PLUS potential viewership brought in by said teams, and how that effects the trailer premier):

Week 1, Sept. 11, LA Chargers vs. Denver Broncos: Only included here because it's week 1 and everyone is watching, and it's the first MNF for the LA Chargers. However, it seems to be too early for a trailer.

Week 2, Sept. 18, Detroit Lions vs. NY Giants: Both teams are very good on paper, and NY is the biggest market. However, again, it seems to be too early for a trailer.

Week 3, Sept. 25, Dallas Cowboys vs. Arizona Cardinals: Arizona isn't any good, but Dallas is and has a huge fanbase. The largest in the sport. This seems to be getting closer to the mark for Disney. However, Dallas' marquee running back Ezekial Elliott will be out this game due to suspension. That might affect if Disney chooses this as the date for the trailer. Additionally, I think it's still too early.

Week 4, Oct. 2, KC Chiefs vs. Washington Redskins: Both teams are decent to good, and both teams have a large following (especially the Skins). Plus, the date falls in October and it is just two months and two weeks out from the film premier. If both teams are playing well up to this point, I expect Disney to choose this date to premier the trailer. However, if both teams are stinking up the joint, they might wait for a later October MNF matchup.

Week 5, Oct. 9, Vikings vs. Bears: The Bears are awful. The Vikings might be alright, but it's up in the air at this point. I don't expect Disney to use this date.

Week 6, Oct. 16, Colts vs. Titans: The Titans are pretty decent, and may only improve this season as I expect Marcus Mariota to take a step forward in terms of talent. However, the Colts are widely expected to be the worst team in the league this year. Neither team has a large national following. Disney won't choose this game.

Week 7, Oct. 23, Redskins vs. Eagles: This is a big divisional matchup, historically. Both teams have rather large followings. If the Skins are as good as expected, and the Eagles surprise by being better than expected, then Disney may choose this date. If not, Disney will wait for what I expect to be the likeliest date of the trailer.

**Week 8, Oct. 30, Broncos vs. Chiefs: Both teams are expected to be good. Both teams have large followings. It's a big divisional matchup. It's the day before Halloween, and families and friends will be together, providing a prime time for word of mouth advertising from the excitement created by the trailer premiering the night before. And Disney can reasonably expect the buzz launched from this night to last a month and a half until the film premier. This, to me, is the most obvious and most likely date for TLJ's Full Trailer.

He's got good sources, but I think both those guys are making educated guesses.

They have to release something for Han Solo that will run before TLJ. You can't wait until February to promote a May tentpole movie.

Black Panther & Avengers 3 will release something that plays before Thor 3

They can't wait until late October to do both, so those will be out by October 20th

Blade Runner 2049 comes out October 6th.

I think it's impossible for them to skip showing TLJ full trailer in front of BR2. If they do they are idiots

I think the week of Sept 25 is the latest they could do it....3-4 weeks after Force Friday, and that way it could premiere in theaters with BR2 in October, which is why I think any real sources that MSW and Breznican have on this topic are saying "October for next trailer." The other reason people could be saying October is the last two SW films had trailers release in October. October is the absolute latest month they could release in (because of Thor 3 in November). So if those two guys say October, and they are right, they look "plugged in" and will get more clicks going forward. Also, betting on LFL milking their fans wallets ten times more often than giving any information is as close to a sure thing so FF2 being in September points to no trailer in that month. And if they are wrong and it's early, no will be made and they can just explain it away by saying they didn't want it to leak, or that it was done much earlier than planned, or whatever.

I say again, if the full trailer for TLJ doesn't release several days before BR2 opens, and it doesn't play in front of BR2 on it's opening weekend, everyone who agreed to a plan for it to release after BR2, starting with KK & JJ, should be fired immediately.

It makes no sense for the trailer for TLJ to premiere in October.

I doubt they'd push it that far. Early to Mid October is a safer bet in my opinion. A conservative bet, even.

Lucasfilm got incorporated on September 12, 1977. Any chance we'll be getting the new trailer on that date to celebrate their 40th anniversary?

We have discussed this regularly on the podcast and the best bet we have so far going is that they will drop the trailer on the second Thursday of October: October 12. We have nothing going on this except that it lines up with the past marketing formats for the past two films. This could change, but I feel we are getting something soon because Rian Johnson and Mark Hamill have both said they are telling fans to avoid the marketing pushes. We could get something in September, but October plays safer for the Disney marketing machine. I don't feel like we NEED the ESPN machine to drop the trailer. Not everyone has access to ESPN, but it worked for The Force Awakens under the Disney umbrella. Most people view these trailers online anyways, so as long as it releases at the same time, all will be well.

I would put my money on October as Rebels S4 is starting in September, we have Force Friday keeping us busy all of September checking out all the new merchandise, and we will be busy with other major headlines. We also have to account for how the marketing machine may be different as the Han Solo film is in May and may cause slight changes to the format.

My only problem with this date is that it's so late in October and the demand for purchasing tickets will be at an all-time high. HOWEVER, in your defense, this will not be like the TFA trailer where they dropped tickets in mid-October. I will say that you may have a shot here as they didn't drop the Rogue One tickets until the very end of November. It is still likely, but I feel October 30 may just be too busy a time where not all eyes will be on tv screens and more focused on Halloween preparation and festivities. Not down waiting that long, but if I have to, I am totally fine with that. Either way, I will be first in line to the screening come December.

NFL Week 2 or 3 would be a good one for the trailer

I think Broncos Chiefs is a yawn for much of the country. (especially east of the Mississippi). And Halloween weekend is way too late.

Don't forget about college football on Thursday night and Saturday night on ESPN & ABC. The game of the week is always like Ohio State-pk
Alabama plays FSU on Sept 2. on ABC in primetime. There are two other ABC or ESPN primetime games later that weekend
Auburn plays @ Clemson Sept 9 on ABC or ESPN possibly the primetime game. Both Will be highly ranked (top 15 at worst). Oklahoma plays Ohio State which I assume is Sat ABC primetime game.
I think Week 3 CFB( Sept 16) has some big matchups too Texas @ USC in the LA Coluseim. That'd have to be primetime.. but might be on Fox

    A few thoughts:

-As some people (myself included) said before, Disney will release the Infinity War trailer in November with Thor, so the November date is obviously out.

-Disney will release Han Solo in MAY (which I think its a mistake, cause it's just a few days after IW and its better to compete in December against Aquaman) and, like RO, they will need to market the hell out of this movie to:

    A) Make people know that this is another spin-off
    B) Make people/fans interested after the problems surrounding this movie
    C) Make general audience know this is another actor playing Han Solo and CONVINCE them that he will do a great job and its worth their money.

So, they will need AT LEAST 2 trailers, one could be in February....but they need to advertise this movie with TLJ too.

-Sure, they could release the trailer with Blade Runner, but Blade Runner is a R rated (not SW target audience) cult-following movie that will make 300 million max. worldwide.

-Remember that Battlefront II is out in November, and, like TFA with the first one, they'll use the hype around TLJ (and right now, there is less hype because there are less trailers) to sell.

We can all agree they will release a full final trailer sometime in October, along with the final poster and the opening tickets sale, like TFA.

The question is..will they release another teaser?

A teaser in September and a trailer in October seems self-defeating, so:

    A) They will release a teaser at the end of August/beginning of September and the trailer at the end of October.
    B) Teaser in September and full trailer in November (I don't think so)
    C) No teaser and trailer in October (I think is suicide)
    D) No teaser and trailer in September. October and November TV Spots or/and Han Solo teaser.
    E) No teaser and trailer in November (I-M-P-O-S-S-I-B-L-E)

I don't think we'll get another teaser, I think we're only gonna get Teaser 1 and Official Trailer, and I think the trailer might not come out until tail end of October, maybe right before Halloween.

This movie better be damn special to make we, the patrons of Chalmun's Cantina, wait for a new trailer. My best guess is sometime during the week of Force Friday, when all of the new material will be revealed anyways. I'd like to crush the windpipe of the people that make those fake Star Wars trailers and trick me. Bastardos!
