LOL.. no... I did not watch LORD OF THE FREAKING RINGS for its characterization. If you did, and get off on that, more power to you. I go to the movies for a good story, not necessarily a good character. If your story sucks or doesn't interest me, it doesn't matter to me how good you think your characters are. If your story is good, i'll forgive the characters being a bit dry to get there. Having a great character in combination with a great story is just gravy.

If it helps, I still watched LOTR series and love those movies /shrug. Hobbit movies, not so much.

Edit: And thinking about it a bit more... isn't streaming more the arena of stories with deep characters, as they tend to have time to fully develop them? I highly suggest the series Dark on Netflix as a great example of a crackerjack story filled with incredible characters. You'll likely need a high-attention span for it, as you'll likely need to watch it in its original German(the dubbing sucks) with subtitles and keeping the characters straight is imperative.

That's because they are grasping at straws for a poorly thought out and written character.

"Why YES... she is the same as Anakin or Luke! She even has a Chosen One backstory to give her credibility to do the things... oh wait, no she doesn't!"

You can’t snuff out an opinion on a subjective artwork like film.

The MS thing with Rey exists largely because, well, she is so powerful and knowledgeable and skillful in TFA to the point she blows past any sort of believability after 10 minutes on screen. By the end of the movie, she’s a great heroine to many, but to many (like myself) she’s boring AND irritating.

KK & JJ have a very creepy obsession with making her perfect and powerful and pristine.

When Cherie busts into that hut at the start of TLJ, and Rey freaking translates to Luke.... you could tell there was a shot where Luke tells her off. Instead of Rey just saying something else and continuing the scene (establishing she’s in the hut with Chewie), she translates. That’s either RJ ready to knock down the ridiculous idea of her speaking every language (a dead horse JJ beats in TFA Until he’s got glue enough to rebuild both Death Stars) or KK & JJ wanting to restablish her language skills as “continuity”

If Luke had said, “listen, close your mouth full of enormous teeth and let me talk to my friend.” That would’ve fit the movie. RJ blew up tons of hacky things from TFA (see Snoke).

JJ is back in control 100%, not creatively, because he hasn’t done anything original since he... yeah he’s a human kinkos.

If you wanted to kill the accusation that Rey is MS (which is debatable.....if only because she’s not named Mary Sue and she didn’t kill Snoke, KR, and Hux in TFA), then hiring a third director for EIX would be a big step.

Rey is very much a MS for KK, in the opinion of many, and given the last part of the trilogy is set up for her to save the galaxy, rebuild the Jedi, and kill the pervert boyfriend from HBO’s show about BK girls (GIrls) plus launch a TV show and new trilogy (they’ll be universe building in EIX), the MS charge is going to be harder to shake.
