I think that TLJ didn't do as well as Disney had expected it to but Rian is best friends with KK and does whatever she wants and this is what she probably cares about the most. While pretty much every other director fell victim to "creative differences" (indicating that KK is difficult to work with) Rian already got the trilogy before TLJ even came out. Moreover, Lucasfilm have backed themselves into a corner because if they let Rian go they would admit that TLJ didn't do as well as they had hoped for. The only way I see Rian's trilogy getting cancelled is if SOLO fails, Lucasfilm is restructured and KK is no longer in charge.

Holdo and DJ were pretty terrible to me as well. I like the idea behind all the plots. Finn has to go back into the belly of the beast. Poe learns what it means to command. The execution and weird script choices is the only hang ups I have with Rian.

It's more likely that Lucasfilm/Disney see the film as successful. Rian Johnson has proven himself in independent original films, sci fi, film noir, TV, and now in Star Wars. He's also proven that he's very easy to work with which will be a huge part of developing a series of film where multiple creatives will be involved.

Ultimately the success/failure of this project depends on the story. There has to be a compelling story to tell.

The good thing about Lucasfilm breaking Star Wars into different series is that they can start tailoring the stories for different fans.

As I've said before, from a PR standpoint it makes sense for Rian's trilogy to be part of a separate Star Wars universe.

I think the box office of Solo may have something to do with the future of Star Wars as a brand. I also think the hiring of the Game of Thrones crew was a bit of a canon ball across the bow of Rian's ship. The timing of it seemed odd, just as the Rian Johnson "hate" began to emerge, suddenly Rian's trilogy announcement was muted with a "don't worry fanbois, there's this other trilogy coming too" announcement.

A huge investment now of 6 films beyond the 9th installment and whatever Solo/Lando stand alones they will also no-doubt announce if Solo makes money, it does seem like all too much.

I think if Disney starts to realize that the fans just want to be spoon-fed "more of the same" rather than "new bold directions", you could see a recalculation of the brand's future.

If I am concerned at all, it's that Star Wars doesn't seem to have much cohesion or integration as a brand. Each project sounds independent and with full license to do "new things". It's bold, but will any of the pieces actually connect? Will characters cross-over? I feel it's a huge, huge mistake if they don't. Marvel shows us this is what fans love and want and with a little patience, you can paint an arc across 18-films, let alone 3.

But Marvel is not the template here is it? There's no signs at all the Netflix series, the GOT trilogy or Rian's trilogy will have any connective tissue at all. And certainly the stand-alones look more like fan-service to me than any real attempt to build a connective, elaborate arc of films like Marvel did.

So we're getting a mish-mash, a hodge-podge of Star Wars stories, each of them with their own unique vision and style.

I do worry this is not going to work, we could wind up with a diluted brand, with no real definitive direction and worse, a very confused audience as to what they are actually digesting.

For one thing, the brand has to stop moving back and forth in time, locales and eras. It confuses casual fans. Some casual fans I've talked are confused by Solo and bummed out the original cast has all been eliminated by the brand.

I should have more faith in Kathleen, she's a true hero of this brand, a savior really and other than George himself probably the most important person to ever touch our beloved franchise. I praise her for all her work and vision, but would be lying if I didn't say that the next "phase" of Star Wars seems muddled, convoluted and at this stage, very very confusing. While Marvel always seemed to have a clear, cohesive, central vision that the entire world has grasped onto and now loves.

Is this really a good strategy to just give fans what they want (more of the same), instead of trying to make something new? Sure, it sounds good in the short term, but the franchise would quickly stale and start to rot if that happens. MCU movies, in comparison, are different in style and tone.
I don't even think SW can work like MCU at this point, because MCU is being built one movie on top of the other year after year, while SW has to work around movies made 40 years ago. In order to make a new MCU, they would have to get rid of all of the old characters, focus on ST as a foundation and build their "universe" further down the timeline. Which Disney seemed to be doing with TLJ.

I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody. (good quote even if comes from Bill Cosby) Lucasfilm knows that is impossible to please everybody in the fandom. Sometimes I think that the Star Wars fandom is too big for their own good

Lucasfilm had been discussing this project long before TLJ was released. The announcement was made simply because it was going to leak out.
Star Wars has been around for a long time and it does mean a lot of different things to people. Marvel is able to bypass this since their films are essentially reboots of established characters. Some Star Wars fans were really devoted to the EU stuff. Those are the stories they've accepted for decades even though the lore in many of those books never connected to what Lucas thought about the force.

I have some issues with this new trilogy. My biggest being the whole Faux Empire/First Order and the relative lack of character development with Han Solo. At the same time, TFA wasn't in a position to take risks. Most of the choices in TFA were designed to minimize risk. JJ punted the Luke question to the next film. The trilogy is devoted to the new characters so RJ had to introduce Luke, explain why he abandoned his friends, and write him off so he wouldn't dominate Episode IX. I think we're fortunate that the ST isn't a disaster. The ST has been a success reintroducing Star Wars and this will allow creators like Rian Johnson to make something original.

I would not be surprised if it doesn't get made. Critics were very generous to TLJ, but fan reaction was much more divided. There is enough negativity about him out there that I would not be surprised if they decided to scrap the whole thing. Mark Hamill has been very outspoken against him JJ Abrams's some things in a different direction.

Didn't JJ just say (paraphrasing) "we're not gonna listen to the backlash"?

Abrams responded to a leading question from IndieWire about the (very small) segment of people complaining about women in Star Wars. And I say very small because they had no great effect on TFA and RO and it's not like they suddenly popped into existence for the first time only for TLJ.

According to you I guess. I'm not sure what that has to do with RJ's future.
This is ludicrous. Hamill and RJ have a great relationship and JJ hasn't said anything about taking things in a different direction. Where does this nonsense come from?

Does all these mean anything? Probably not, but all these many declarations are the source for all this "nonsense". This is not ludicrous, it's only normal to people to jump on conclusions, right or not. But just as no one can say that they fought and hate each other, saying that they have a great relationship is wrong too. The truth is, no one of us was there, so saying anything at this point is just pointless speculation. In the same level that some people are hating without thinking, many others are just blindly defending anything, and offending others too in the process. Let's be rational, this is not a war.

Great relationship?! LOL, what? Besides the videos posted directly below there's stuff like this all over the Internet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0biqMZrxJ0. This is not some conspiracy theory or grabbing at straws, it's pretty common knowledge there was something going on between these two.

It's common knowledge that, at one point, Hammil didn't love the direction Luke's character was being taken in.

That sentiment has been explained ad nauseum by all parties involved.

They made a freakin documentary about it.

If someone was to still cling to the idea that there's some sort of underlying issue that's being covered up... personally, yeah, I'd call that a conspiracy theory.

A good role of thumb here. If you want to be taken seriously don't cite the gamed RT score or poorly edited YouTube videos.
    Yep, it's complete nonsense.

I had never paid attention or even knew RT had an audience score until TLJ. I guess it was the easiest high profile score to rig. Right now it has about twice as many votes as TFA. It's comical.

Listen, I'm not the type to argue about Who's Hot on the internet, but KMT is a babe, y'all, and I cannot let Mr. Blade Runner avatar get away with this SLANDER.

Also, I think Rian's gonna get the trilogy, and it'll probably be fine.
