I think Episode 8 will be seen as the "dark sheep" of the Star Wars Saga.
One that will divide fans and critics.
But one that may end up as being one of the best Star Wars instalment.

It all depends on your expectations, on how good it will be. I went into TFA thinking, it's not going to be good, but if it's better than the prequels, I'm fine. I knew I'd like Rogue One, and I did. After I watched TFA the first time, I thought it was good, but the sequel will be better. Because it would have it's own identity, instead of relying so much on the OT. So if it's as good or better than TFA, I'm fine. If it's not as good as TFA I seriously fear for the future of Star Wars.

The chance of TLJ being a straight up bad film is microscopic. Rian is just too good. Divisive? That's another story. I'm sure there will be plenty of controversial ideas.

At this point my expectations and hype are insanely high. If I'll end up hating a good deal of the film, it'll be a catastrophe for me. "Disappointment" wouldn't begin to describe it. Can't help it! But there are reasons for me to have so much faith - a brilliant writer/director being the crucial one. I put all my money on Rian, so to speak.

I agree! I took TFA with a grain of salt and ended up pleasantly surprised, but with TLJ, I am nearly 100% positive it won't be a failure to the majority of SW fans. I don't know much of Rian's work, but from what I've seen, I am very excited!

I had this fear before the release of TFA. After watching TFA I am much more confident that they will deliver us a great trilogy. They wont follow the mistakes of the prequels for sure.

If by some weird off chance that it isn't good, I most likely won't watch Episode IX and stick to games or anthology films.

With SW movies for the foreseeable future we are bound to get one that is not going to be good. While I don't think TLJ will be it, one bad movie is not going turn me away. I'll watch the next one. If bad movies start becoming a pattern then I'll worry. That being said, I'm not concerned about TLJ or the future if SW.

i think there is nothing i can do if it's abad movie, but if it's good then it's great...but regardless any movie that is as scrutinized as these movies will have it's detractors as well as it's obsessive fans

There's always a chance it won't be good. I thought that about Rogue One in theaters, and then I bought the Blu-Ray and watch it all of the time. Anything is possible, however, but it would just be like some people's hatred of other Star Wars films, like TPM. People will hate it, people will love it. Same as the EU. Some stuff sucked, but it's Star Wars, so regardless of if it would suck, I'm still going to find stuff to love about it, or just love it in general like I do the other 8. As long as Star Wars keeps coming for the rest of my life, I don't really care.

I don't really see a situation happening in which any of the new SW films is truly bad. In the worst case, it will be safe and stick to a tested formula, which most people would generally be happy with. Lucasfilm won't allow itself to release a SW film that is disliked by both fans and critics. However, I do hope that it isn't the case.

By tested formula, you mean the First order attacks a planet the Resistance/Republic has a secret base on, and they retreat. Rey and Luke train for months until Rey gets a bad feeling. Poe and Finn travel for weeks until they reach a casino world. Rey leaves the island to save people on the Casino planet, losing a hand to Kylo Ren and finds out Luke is her father or Leia her mother? Probably.

My expectations for TFA were through the roof. But I didn't care for it. And now I struggle to watch the film in its entirety. However, as much as I don't like the film, I do still find myself intrigued by the story and characters. My hope is that, due to my reaction to TFA that my expectations for TLJ will be tempered somewhat and that this may help me enjoy my initial viewing of the film. However, Johnson has a lot to do in my mind to rescue this trilogy and make a film that deserves to be a part of the saga. But where I was confident (though subsequently let down) in TFA of doing this, I literally haven't a clue how TLJ will play out. I hope it's a fresh experience, with original ideas and as deep, exciting and emotive as TESB. It could be all those things. But likewise it could be none of it. I'm just more content now in starting from a position of low expectations as my disappointed post TFA was depressing.

I still think the the 3rd movie in a Trilogy is the one that fans will question the decisions the most. The 1st movie sets everything up, the 2nd movie sets everything in motion, the 3rd movie ties everything up. I think ROTJ & ROTS are the weakest of the 7 Saga movies simply because they don't do a good job of tying up many plot points, where ESB & AOTC are the best of each Trilogy because they take the story wherever they want and leave it at that.

I suspect the same with TLJ is it will take the story in one way that we may not expect, but Episode 9 will have the heavy lifting of answering all of those questions from the previous 2 movies.

But we need to keep one thing in mind... we are living in a world where movie reviews now have the main function of drawing attention, traffic to one's youtube channel or website.

    The rest goes viral.

You will have reviewers that are already ready to blast Episode 8, make it sink.
Some will just be overwhelmed by it.

See what happened with TFA and R1?

In my opinion... but for some RARE exception... you can basically drown or praise any movies, all based on putting the emphasis on one thing or the other.

Nobody will sell me the fact that Rogue One is a bad movie.

I guess, once again, for some of us Episode 8 will be a WOW or a disappointment.
But, let's put it this way: the anticipation for E8 is far less that it was for 7... this fact only will leave many fans less disappointed.

We have survived the Prequels and after aging some (20 years for TPM!), they are easier to appreciate. I dont think its possible for Disney to do worse than TPM as far as a Star Wars movie goes. So if its bad, over time you may still learn to appreciate the story it is trying to convey even if it was poorly executed.

Star Wars hipsters are a very real thing.
It's become so popular, not liking it is seen as being part of the "cool" crowd in a way.

It's all very silly and I'm sure RLM and others have their videos ready to click "Publish" on already

While I can't wait for the movie and hope it's not just a great SW movie but a great movie overall, I'd be kidding myself if I'm not the slightest bit concerned. Not because of anything that I've seen or heard, but because of my built-up anticipation. I can also see some die-hard fans disagreeing with some of the story choices that Rian made. I won't take anything personally, and am willing to go in to this with an open mind.
