    Because, Luke's has already been constructed...just dismantled, and it's Lukes. Rey has to learn to construct her own from scratch...to understand how to do it, and how all of the components work together...to make it unique...to make it her own...an extension of who she is...her weapon...the weapon of a Jedi that is hers for a lifetime.

    Remember, they don't come in "kit form", as each is "hand built" by it's owner, and every one is unique.

    I'm REALLY hoping this comes to pass, and that we see it. The scene of Luke building his ROTJ saber was cut from the film, and I'm really hoping that they don't rob us of that again.

    Also, yes it will mean a Rey ForceFX saber on the market, and I will own one to be displayed next to the Anakin and Luke sabers that I already have.

    But Luke originally just took his fathers saber and that was going to be fine for him until he lost it. He made a new lightsaber because he needed one.
    I always took the line "You've constructed a new lightsaber...your skills are complete" to mean that Luke has shown exceptional ability to make a lightsaber of his own (and on his own) - not that the actual act of making a lightsaber is a prerequisite for being a Jedi. I could be wrong and I am am recalling something from the Clone Wars where it contradicts my view here?

    Either way, Rey using the components of Luke's saber to put it back together doesn't seem all that different from just constructing a completely new lightsaber. I just think that journey of that saber from hero to hero throughout the saga is important and that Rey being the new hero should likely use it.

    me too, I already have the Luke/Rey ANH/TFA (black series), Luke ROTJ (force fx and ultimate), Anakin/Luke ROTS (force fx removable blade and ultimate) :)

    There were certain episodes from TCW and Rebels in which we learned how the Jedi construct their lightsaber. There is a connection between each padawan and a kyber crystal that they then make as the power source for their lightsaber. It's an intimate collaboration between a padawan and their master. Being that Luke is the last Jedi, it's imperative that he instructs Rey in this. However, the kyber crystal in Anakins lightsaber has "called out" to Rey, so a search for a new crystal has been rendered moot. The only way Luke can instruct her is to dismantle it and teach her how to reconstruct her "new" lightsaber.

    Yeah, that's my thoughts exactly. Like I say, Luke was fine taking his fathers saber so I don't see why it would be different for Rey.
    I remember a scene from the early Clone Wars series with Luminara Unduli I believe it was going to a kyber crystal cave and constructing a saber with her padawan. Can't remember the details, might be worth look back at that too.

    Very cool!! :) I loved the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars! I also love the Clone Wars series, but the Tartakovsky version had such a cool and unique style.

    yes.. there's definitely a 'thing' going on between Rey and the 'Skywalker' lightsaber, but if Luke doesn't include Lightsaber building in his Jedi training of Rey... how in sam hill is any Jedi in the future gonna be able to make one?

    Here is a new fanmade film. I get that some want to see that construction, but I'd rather watch expression of force connection and expression in a story relevant wa, those floating parts just leave me underwhelmed.

    Yeah it is really a good short film, with the right emphasis on character and not lightsaber colors or cool posing!

    I read hat theory. But then it looks like Jedha turns out to be
    the planet where the Death Star tests its weapon.
    But that too is a strong theory. Eitherway, it does seem like kyber crystals have a bigger role to play now...

    Yeah looks like George was already aiming for this in TCW and now they crammed out the old story treatments for ANH, where he fleshed them out as a Mcguffin.
    Here is a good collection of all canon sources so far.

    I still think Rey's staff is an ancient malfunctioned light saber. Perhaps it's crystals were removed and sold on Jakku. 2 crystal probably sell for more separately?

    I initially thought that her staff was likely more than just a staff that perhaps she is unaware of, but haven't considered it in some time, but yes, I think it's possible.
