Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm have already announced that they will not recast, nor will the use CGI or old footage. So unfortunately she will not be in 9 at all.

To my knowledge, they have never said they will recast. They have said they will not use CGI. They have said they will not splice together unused footage from TFA and TLJ. They have not said they will not recast.

I appreciate the views of everyone who do not want to see Leia recast, but again, the premise of this thread is about who should play Leia if they do recast. Let's keep the "should they / shouldn't they" for other threads.

If they do recast I think Jodie Foster would be a good choice. She’s got a good track record, is the right age and would be able to make the part her own without it being an impersonation of Fisher.

However given that Carrie gave such a great performance in VIII, and that there needs in my view to be a time jump of years to move the story on (TFA and TLJ both happen in the period of several weeks it seems to me) - they won’t recast and the character will die offscreen.

Are we actually serious??? Recast princess Leia??

This is wrong on just so many levels I can't even.

The right thing should have been a graceful sendoff in TLJ. Now the right thing imo is a graceful sendoff in the years between movies (god i hope there are some years between these movies to build a proper backstory). In a scenario they could even go the route of a last message from princess Leia using Hologram to issue a final request or order to the rebels. In that case they would need a voice actor most likely, but my god dont recast the character.

Either you recast or you awkwardly remove her from the Resistance leadership with no sendoff of any kind after being the central figure of the Resistance. No option is desirable, but a recast makes more sense story-wise. There is no reason Leia would suddenly desert the Resistance, especially not in its hanging by a thread state at the end of TLJ.

Tjey might have enough unused footage to create a new scene. They said tjey won't do the CGI thing, but they say a lot of things. Most likely theyll kill her off in a novel and mention it in 9. I dunno they're screwed lol.

Simple fix: Leia died between VIII and IX, of natural circumstances. Kylo Ren, so engulfed in the intricacies of war and building the galaxy according to his own vision, and never senses her death (like how the war affected the abilities of the Jedi Order during the Clone Wars). If Ben is yet to be a part of some larger redemption arc, and Leia was supposed to be a catalyst for that in IX, then you work around Carrie’s unfortunate passing by having a character such as Rey explain this to him when they inevitably come face-to-face. Ben is actually the one who brings Leia up in their confrontation, asking where she is and if she ever tried to turn him herself, but Rey explains that she died a long time ago (assuming that a few years pass between the two films). He doesn’t believe her, of course, but Rey remains calm and tells him to reach out for her; he does, and she’s not there. He becomes an emotional wreck, and either turns (if there’s a greater evil to take down than himself), or attempts to take on Rey, but, being emotionally wounded, can be defeated.

I don’t think that a recast is the best option. Actually, I’d put it far below having Carrie recreated with CG; I’m struggling to see how a recast would go well with hardcore fans and the more casual audience at large.

I believe the character Leia needs a better send off than a novel or a comic might provide. You could use a double and film obscure angles and use carefully selected footage that was left over from TLJ. And then have her be the victim of an assassination right at the start of the film mirroring EP 2. If a few years have passed that could be a catalyst to jump start the story once more.

Perhaps if it was at beginning of some sort of peace negotiations or alliance talks with other planets/systems.

Jodie Foster had not crossed my mind for this role, but I actually think it is the best suggestion so far.

At the time of Carrie Fisher passing away,LFL consulted with Carrie's daughter and brother and after discussion announced that there would be no CGI of Carrie done out of respect for Carrie.

Plot wise was not mentioned however in the absence of the actual person and no CGI then only a recast would be possible and how that respects Carrie anymore so I am unclear.

At the time Carrie's death Colin Trevorrow was still to be Ep 9 Director.

I just don't see Leia being brushed aside unceremoniously. She's too critical to the Resistance and to Kylo Ren's story to simply have her suddenly vanish.

The way The Last Jedi ended, I think their best option is to have Episode IX start a few years later and explain that she passed away at some point in between. Carrie Fisher was Princess Leia, and no one else on this planet could fill those shoes. (However, I do hope they give Billie Lourd a significantly larger role in the next film to compensate for Carrie being absent.)

All I want is one final reunion at the end of the film with Luke, Leia, and Han as Force ghosts (or even if Harrison wouldn't go for it—because it really doesn't make sense being that Han wasn't Force-sensitive—just Luke and Leia). I would imagine they at least have enough footage of her for a brief Force ghost shot at the end of the film.

Re-casting is a ghastly idea! I would hate to see anyone else play the role.

I would prefer 3-5 years pass, and Leia has either passed away peacefully or retires from the resistance to some faraway planet, and we hear her voice as she advises the resistance occasionally. (with a voice actress playing the part)

I'm for Lt. Connix having a larger role in the resistance as well to honour Carrie Fisher.

A re-cast has never occurred to me. I'm not sure I support the idea, but it would depend on the story.

Maybe the character could be shot from behind or always have her face obscured like Niles Crane's wife in "Frasier".

Or like Wilson from Home Improvement! But seriously, I’m torn about this. I wouldn’t mind anew-cast if Leia plays a major role but if not, maybe an off-screen death would be most appropriate.
