Why didn't Palpatine just stop zapping?

The problem is this: Rey Wannabe Skywalker just defeated the dark side and there is no one worthy left to fight.

Having her face some disgruntled corporate schmo with attachment issues? Meh. Been there, prequels.
What about an emo antagonist, Vader cosplayer w/ family problems? Yep. Sequels crushed that.

Some random pop-up villain is not going to fly.... because ST makes it clear that RWS is the most powerful force user alive.
It's Papa Sheev or bust; no one else is a believable threat.

 

Ah yes, the two types of villains... businessmen and My Chemical Romance. There are no others.

 

From what we have seen, this screenplay was originated via a writer's room with contributions from Damon Lindelof and Dave Filoni among others and now in the hands of Steven Knight, so surely something as ludicrous as Pappy rising yet again would have been filtered out by someone in the process. More likely, such a vastly talented team of writers would not need to use such devices because, oh, I don't know... they can create and develop a fresh idea. Fingers crossed.

With all the bad news about Indy 5, I just hope the new Jedi Order film is a win… I’ll watch Indy at home…

Perpetually reincarnating the devil or big nemeses of the good guys has been a staple of myth, legend and religious scripts for centuries. But people react to the concept of Sidious/Palpatine/The Sith possibly returning some day as if we're talking about taking out a third mortgage on your house just to pay for a trip to Disneyland.

 

I don't say a lot when it comes to the ST as I was taught if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all, complaining is just personal temporary relief of frustrations. But if you can't think up a new threat to the GFFA in 39 years, maybe you're not the screenwriter you think you are.
If they reincarnate Palps again, I will seethe publicly instead privately, which I currently do.

 

Yeah, the return of the villain, that exists in order to epitomize the villainous aspect of this fantasy world, isn’t absurd. That’s the character’s function. How well or poor it works in the story depends entirely on the execution.

I get the criticism though. When you get a line like Maz’s in TFA, “Through the ages, I've seen evil take many forms.” You’d kind of want to maybe see one of those other forms at this point.

Specifically, I don’t much like the idea of Palpatine somehow surviving within Rey. It’s antithetical to the finale of the ST. She’s given the choice of embracing a legacy defined by “hatred” and “revenge”, that would allow that darkness to literally persist inside of her. And she resoundingly rejects that legacy at the end. It doesn’t make any thematic sense for the result to be the same regardless.

It totally undermines the message of TROS. Though, I guess, some folks feel the Sith surviving at all undermines the message of ROTJ, so . . . . . . ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Y'all were excited for Palpatine. Almost everyone was. Don't pretend you weren't.

Just because Abrams fumbled the idea doesn't mean it was inherently a bad idea.
