Hi! I'm a person, and my name is Anakin. I'm a nine-year-old slave child who somehow has the ability to construct complex, jet-propelled racing machines and androids without any technical education or professional guidance. I was also able to somehow pilot my race pod and win a high-profile pod race against several professional racers from across the galaxy. I was also able to destroy a Trade Federation ship from the inside and escape unharmed to secure victory for the entire planet of Naboo against the invading Trade Federation forces.

But what's that you were saying about not being able to believe in the fighting skills of Rey in The Force Awakens?

Brilliant and logical. It's sad that so many TFA haters won't apply their same questions and logic to both previous trilogies. In addition to what you wrote, add in the idea that the movie strongly infers that Rey (1) was most likely trained in the force by Luke up to a certain age, (which young Luke and Anakin didn't have), (2) Rey is in top physical condition exploring the debris on Jakku and has had to fend for herself for years against thieves, thugs, and robbers and has gotten quite proficient with her hands and fighting staff (obvious movie clues, novelization, and visual dictionary), (3) Rey is now starting to remember and unlock this training (as the force awakens in her at maz's castle, with Kyla's mind interrogation, and her final light saber unlock), and (3) Rey is able to watch what powers and force techniques that kylo has tried on her and others and then try them herself. Anakin and Luke were almost lucky to do what they did with the force in their first movies compared to what Rey had already learned/was unlocking once again/and now practicing from Kylo's example. I wonder if some of these people even tried to watch the movie a second time, and if they need to go back and rewatch the previous movies again.

I'm not a PT defender but have we seen the same film? He was a slave child who has been working with technical education and guidance from the shop owner Watto ever since he was the age of four (probably). And obviously the shop had complex machinery in storage like that Nubian hyperdrive.
IIRC, he had been doing some pod-racing earlier, much like these camel riding kid jockeys in the Arabian world (which was probably the analogy).

Apparently this was pretty much alike to what the Rey character did. Collecting and scavenging complex machinery, which requires a certain amount of training and knowledge.

    Ya I agree.
Isn't that kinda the point however?
Both movies ask the audiance to fill in with their own imagination but @Background Character suspects there is a double standard held by some?

Yeppers, agreed. The whole point of the Anakin post. It's all about comparisons. A number of people on here complain about potential problems in TFA without realizing that nostalgia has concealed that ANH and the other movies have done the same types of things in speculation, unanswered questions, and glossing over certain information for supplemental materials and future sequels to answer. People complain that certain force powers of Kylo or force growth in Rey is not canonical or too unbelievable and rushed in TFA, but they don't look carefully enough at the specific powers used in previous movies (as well as who used them) or the force power growth of previous characters in the movies. When all is said and done, I feel like TFA was pretty darn consistent in these things, given the background, training, and physical and emotional characteristics of the characters and what we do know in TFA, let alone what we don't yet know. It simply helps to look at all of the available information, fill in the gaps based on that information, and keep an open mind about what hasn't yet been revealed. Hope that isn't asking for too much...

9/10 people don't even know what a Mary Sue is in literature. Yet they all copy Landis' opinion who himself misinterprets the meaning of Mary Sue. Rey is definitely not a Mary Sue, Mary Sue's don't cry for starters!

How did this turn into a prequel bashing thread?

"How many times do I have to tell you to stay away from power couplings?"

TFA has some flaws for sure and a lot of stuff that I think will be adressed in the next episode. But man those Meme images are just sad. 'JarJar abrams'? really?! Where these images made by a 5-year old? And who goes out and takes the time to make these things lol...retarded.

It was a horrible movie. Stop defending it.

Rey did a jedi master mind trick in three tries with zero formal training and with no gesture, no homage to the films of old. YES even Luke used the hand gesutre in Jabbas palace.

Rey did what took Luke Skywalker two movies to do in under an hour, because she is a Mary Sue.

A real lightsaber battle was Anakin versus Obi Wan in ROTS, not one sided until the "Force" moment and then it becomes even more one sided.

Rey struck at Kylo in anger, which is NOT the light side at all another lack of detail.

So many inconsistencies I dare say your not a SW fan if you overlook them, because you're indeed not. If you're willing to wear blind glasses to the legend and lore setup by George Lucas, then you are willing to overlook all glaring contraditons and that makes you a groupie, NOT a Star Wars fan.

    Rant ended.

It was a horrible movie anyone who says otherwise is not a Star Wars fan and never was.

I could list glading contradictions all day.

But a few notable newspaper articles of critics are already published such as Huffington Post I believe and many other critic articles.

TFA is the worst done SW movie of them all.

And I will keep driving the point home to counter act the lameness that was accepted with TFA and the groupies who all pretend to like SW and overlook the trash that was produced with TFA.

Dude I dont care there was no hand gesture your point is invalid and also Sith dont use mind tricks it has never been in any canon or eu that Sith have used the JEDI mind trick.
    --- Double Post Merged, Jan 30, 2016 ---
Anyone who likes TFA is not a SW fan. PERIOD. You blindly accept the glaring contradictions and disregard the traditions and homeage of the SW universe thst was created. Enough said.

Kylo Ren/Ben was a Jedi apprentice before becoming Snoke's apprentice.

The power to wield the Force isn't just in your hands. You can lose both of them, or your entire arms, and still be able to command the Force. It's theatrics.
