Your answer is the Awakening. the Force has changed since the times of the OT. but it's no less mysterious. Kylo & Rey's powers are perhaps greater than anything weve seen in regards to the Force thus far. i love that the Force is surging within individuals in the galaxy. its exciting!

It sounds like you feel excited that Star Wars characters now become superheroes thanks to the Force?

not at all. it sounds like you missed the point of the Title of the film, let alone the context within.

I'm sorry, what!? We can't say that? Umm, where is that written??

(yoda)"Learn nothing from the Dark Side of value you can. Help you it will not. Pointless it is-Oh wait.."

So.. Any of you TFA bashers want to explain to me how Luke learned this technique?
Bear in mind that Luke Skywalker NEVER OBSERVED Lord Vader use this technique.

So there are only two conclusions one can come to:
He learned the technique spontaneously from the Dark Side..(dual)

    OR

He learned it via the mind link between him and Darth Vader in Empire.. (dad)

You don't have to have training to be strong in the force.

Really?!? Is this a mystery. If you can pick things up with your hand you have master squeezing things. If you squeeze a neck you have learned to choke someone. If you learn to pick things up with your mind. You can use the same telekinetic process to squeeze a neck.

Its only a dark side power in video games which offer replayability for choice and different powers.

Luke chokes the guards because he was playing a part. He stopped them and brushed them aside and did not kill them. Further these were guards who were going to harm him so the Jedi principal "only for defense" was upheld.

    Yeah, it is.
In this situation a Jedi would use force push. It's not necessary to strangle someone.

I guess we are gonna disagree on this one. Strangle in this case is an exaggeration in that it implies he killed them. He wanted them cowed, brushed aside and to appear like someone who would destroy Jabba. He squeazed a second and moved on. A show of force. If he force tossed them it would have dragged things out they wanted a feeling of Luke being above the brute force being thrown at him.

Also my in asking why it is such a mystery is because you asked how Luke figured the technique out without training. My point is if you can move things with your mind you already know how to choke people its not a special separate technique.

Luke had been practicing with the force for three years and he still struggled when he pulled the lightsaber to him.

I did but it seemed you were suggesting there was only 2 explanations for Luke learning the choke I was simply throwing out another possibility that he just figured if you can push things you can choke things.

As for Rey I think it is clear that she is remembering training or she is figuring it out the same way. If you can take ideas from people's heads you can put them in. Perhaps Ren's interrogation techniques involve pushing the person to tell not just pulling ideas from people's mind.

My general thought on Rey is likewise. You have a unique opinion on the force choke. It's not one I have heard anywhere else.

Well, since I made that post I have changed from "Kylo could not pull the lightsaber from the snow and Rey was the one to pull it free" to "Kylo pulled it from the snow and then Rey 'just' changes the path"...
If she already knew that force abilities were possible, such as the mind probe and mind trick, seeing Kylo pulling the saber, she gave it a try too... And even her looks surprised that it worked...

My point about Luke was that it was possible to do it yourself, though.

To be clear, when Luke pulled the lightsaber to him on Hoth, he was yet to receive any training in the force, beyond Obi-Wan's and Luke's spending a few min with the training sphere on the Falcon, and even then Luke blocked the blaster shots. Luke went to train with Yoda AFTER leaving Hoth.

So IMO, it is quite clear someone with little to no training, but powerful in the force, could pull a lightsaber to them, as I feel this was established in ESB.
