That was in the Tarkin novel and to take that point of view you have to fully accept the point of view of the narrator. Was Plagueis telling the truth when he said the Force struck back? Was Sidious fully informed?

All the truths we cling to depend greatly upon our own point of view...

But at the same time, if he is a bigger, badder threat, does that not diminish Palpatine and the films that came before? Would it not be better to have Snoke be part of the same story (not just an out of the blue tacked on villain) that isn't necessarily more dangerous than Palpatine, but just different? Perhaps Plagueis' obsession with mastering the Force itself - gaining power over life and death and being able to shape the Force how he wills it, makes him the perfect villain in contrast to Sidious who just wanted galactic domination....

Furthermore, unless Snoke is a Palpatine/Vader clone or something equally as silly, he won't tie into the story of Darth Vader, which is what the saga is all about. Plagueis on the other hand can be tied directly to Vader. All they have to do is make it canon that he did create Vader. We'd then have the architect for this entire Skywalker saga!

well this is what it's all about.

    what is the threat?

Palpatine is dead, and the galaxy celebrated. Now i don't want to diminish the emperor's power's or legacy... but surely the dark side of this saga has to be cranked up a notch?

Snoke looks ancient... to me anyway.

it's been mentioned before (and it normally makes people cringe), but i wouldn't fall off my chair if the threat becomes a tweaked version of the Yuuzhan Vong from the EU. when i say tweaked... i really mean butchered, as most did not enjoy that stuff.

There are many of us that think that Finn will have a story line eventually to free/unite all the stormtroopers.. perhaps going in the Vong direction (lol sorry that was bad) would tie everything together nicely? FO and resistance/republic unite to face a new deadly common foe?

it would certainly be a huge twist.. and a huge twist is the hot rumor right now (although we don't know what it is)

i'm not arguing against this happening, as we've been talking about it for literally years now... but would it all be a bit too neat?

i think i'd rather have something really new... or something really really old.

I think the Emperor's legacy is safe.. for starters we will always revere him ;)

I agree they should absolutely be different. Plagueis and Palpatine were definitely very different from each other. Plagueis was more of a mad scientist of the Force if you ask me. That's how I interpreted him.

I don't think any larger threat would diminish Palpatine in any way. He was what he was...but the fact that he sensed the dark-side presence in the Unknown Regions (per Aftermath) and nobody else, even Vader, could sense it. That is a potential Plagueis/Snoke connection. Why wouldn't anybody else be able to sense to presence?

Guys, Plaugeis was a Muun. They look nothing alike. The better story is that Palpatine killed his master and became the master himself. Snoke is a NEW character. That's the better story. A whole lot better than Plaugueis sat around waiting for Palpatine to go away so he could reemerge as a new species and take over the galaxy.

I just think, whilst we're still dealing with this wretched Skywalker family, let's keep the story connected through Vader. Obviously, the Emperor has always had a connection to Vader both by turning him evil and being his master. Newbie Snoke doesn't have any worthwhile connection unless he was once the man that created him and kicked off the Skywalker saga...

i don't think it's in the Tarkin novel that they talk about Plagueis and Palps possibly creating Anakin; that was in the now legends Plagueis book, i believe. the Tarkin novel only served as a canon example of Plaggy being Palps master, which up to that point hadn't been solidified in current canon. unless i'm mistaken, there's nothing in the Tarkin novel about meddling with the Force to create life.

i don't think Plaggy has a species in the new canon... they glossed over most details in the Tarkin novel.

The Muun is no longer canon. Plagueis can be any species going forward.
And anyway, if Snoke is new he was still waiting around for Palpatine to go away as well! We know Snoke witnessed the rise and fall of the Empire. So what was he doing? Exactly what Plagueis would've done if he lived...

i think it sticks to the Skywalkers in that they are clearly troubled and easily influenced by the dark side. if anything, it shows that the dark side can come in many forms and that the Skywalkers are still struggling with themselves. having Plaggy involved doesn't enrich this, in my opinion.

Well even better then - there is no canon explanation for Anakin's creation.

New villains should be for new sagas, new stories. And I see no better way of enriching the inner dark side conflict of the Skywalker family than by revealing that they were created by the Sith themselves! If we need a reason for Luke to doubt himself, well, there you have it!

meh, it feels cliched and lazy to me. i always felt that these stories were about overcoming personal demons and all that jazz. to find out that they only have personal demons because the Sith created them would utterly diminish the entire point of the saga.

    my 2 cents, anyway.

This is a line in the Tarkin novel:

"Darth Plagueis had once remarked that 'the Force can strike back".

so now i'm saying 'new', and you're saying... 'Skywalker' ?

lmao, we've been discussing this stuff for so long that we've forgotten what sides we both support.

But the point is that their origins don't have an impact upon their futures unless they let it.
Being created by the Sith wouldn't make them turn evil. But upon discovering it out, it might conflict them.
Take Kylo for instance - he believes he is fulfilling some kind of dark destiny. Now, if he discovered he was created by the Sith, wouldn't that further this idea in his mind? He may be incorrect to think that but nevertheless, it would be another interesting layer to his story.

    so can the empire... ;)
what's your point? with so little context you would have to bend over backwards to apply this to the Skywalkers.

These trilogies have always been the Skywalker Saga to me my friend! I just don't think Rey needs to be a Skywalker to make it so!

ok, sure, toss out all the stuff about overcoming your own internal dark side, make it about being created by the Sith, and hell! let's change the bad guy's name too. Snoke sounds good.

it's a house of cards at this point. the Plaggy foundation is as sound as Rey Solo.

I don't have a point, really. I was just responding to someone above (and you saying there isn't a reference in the Tarkin novel ;)) saying that Anakin's origins were clear cut. They're not.
Force creation, Force strike back vs Sith or direct Sith creation are all on the table.
    --- Double Post Merged, May 16, 2017, Original Post Date: May 16, 2017 ---
I just explained why it doesn't toss out the internal struggle idea but adds to it. It isn't about making it all about Sith creation but providing a villain who connects to the larger story and provides a clean and satisfying continuation and ending for this saga. And changing names in Star Wars is hardly a new thing...

Except nothing rules out Plagueis, nothing contradicts it and it makes the most sense. But sure, apart from that, it's just as clueless as Rey Solo

and I just talked about how it feels lazy and cliched! this is fun!

nothing rules out Plaggy except the whole HE'S DEAD thing. other than that, you're right, bullet proof!
    --- Double Post Merged, May 16, 2017 ---
if Plaggz can still be alive and Palpz not know it, then Rey Solo could still be alive and Leia not know it.
    --- Double Post Merged, May 16, 2017 ---
it's all just baseless speculation, is my point.

    More cliched than:

"Hi everyone, I'm Mr Snoke! I've been living in the Unknown regions for decades watching events and have now decided to try and take over the galaxy so that Disney can make a trilogy of films".

your lack of faith is disturbing! if you think that the only way to pull off the ST is by bringing Plaggy back then i think you're in for a disappointment...
