Because Anakin and Luke were never previously trained!!! Dude, how many times do I have to mention that concept?

Plus, those two were never given an opportunity anyway. In Episode 1, Anakin didn't do a thing. By the time AOTC came around, he had already been trained, we have no idea what happened before that.

Luke also never used a lightsaber in combat until Empire, where he was briefly trained by Yoda but then actually kind of held his own against Vader.

Rey might not have been previously trained. And as I said - you beleive what little training an 8 year would recieve, over a decade before and long forgotten = defeating an active, trained, experienced combatant?

In every story about Anakin between TPM and AotC (new EU and Legends) he isn't a great fighter right off the bat. The Marvel comics are dealing with Luke trying to learn, and learning (so he didn't go to Yoda a clean slate) AND its debatable how long Luke was with Yoda and how much Yoda was able to teach him.

Yes, exactly, it's debatable. It all is debatable, which is why in the beginning we can't know for sure until TLJ why she was able to hold her own with Kylo. Maybe we will never know. Regardless, it happened, and we just gotta accept it.

but like I said, if thats your position you've taken yourself out of the conversation. Maybe they'll have a good explination maybe they won't. Its a dead-end argument/position at this point. It also doesn't negate the fact that upon the release of TFA, Rey was a Mary Sue character - considering the ST wasn't all written whent hey wrote and shot TFA, they clearly wanted her to be and designed her that way.

And no, people don't have to accept it. People can maintain a dislike for that character or that element of the character, or movie, and be critical of it for as long as they want.

Okay, you're right, you don't have to accept it.

You either accept it, and love Star Wars for what it is, or you complain constantly on the internet about something you think you would have done better.

I personally fall in the former category.

You can love something and be critical of it.

Be critical, that's fine, but don't dismiss me out of the conversation because I choose to be optimistic in it.

And the language was just not necessary.... :(

I'm saying your position is one that dismisses itself.

If you're position is we can't call Rey a Mary Sue because we don't know whats coming in the next two movies, you also can't claim Rey isn't a Mary Sue because we don't whats coming in the next two movies. The position cancels itself out.

    Anyway...

Back on topic (for those wiling to actually discuss the topic):

I think an interesting thing to point out is the question being asked in this thread. "Will Rey Turn to the Dark Side?" with answer options being only "Yes" and "No".

Ultimately, I think part of the reason this is so polarizing is because it's all in how you read the question. If the intent is that the Dark Side is where Rey ends the trilogy, then I'd say that she wouldn't. That seems almost absurdly unlikely.

It could also read "Will Rey turn to the Dark Side at some point?" This is more likely than the first option. Certainly not confirmed, though.

Finally, a more liberal interpretation could read something like "Will Rey be tempted by the Dark Side, or possibly temporarily give in during a moment of weakness"? That, I think, would be the most likely situation.

Is issue is one of story vs real world influences.

There are many good story options/directions for Rey to became the villain (ultimate or tempory) of the ST and beyond.

No these options/directions won't be explored/won't happen because realities given the current producers of Star Wars and their obvious desire/goal feature heroic female and minorities characters. Rey was the first of this wave and their flagship hero/character. They are not going to have her protrayed in any kind of negative way/light. This is where the Mary Sue stuff comes in - its the evidence. In TFA Rey is basically a perfect character who is great at everything she does without any work or training required. They take the time to have his shake of Finn's help when running etc...

The First and Flagship hero of this female/diverse movement is not going to become the villain or a villain of the ST.

Yeah, we've been over that, and I thoroughly and emphatically disagree. I'm trying to get back on topic...

Out of the three possibilities that I mentioned, do you not even see the least of them (being tempted by the dark side and possibly momentarily giving in) to be even plausible?

Edit: Good lord, a troll rating? For trying to get back on topic? Come on, CR, this is getting sad. Sorry about your ego.

But there is nothing to disagree. Its obvious that the goal/message is there. Rey IS the poster for that change in direction. And they are goign to make their first female lead character into a villain.

From a story stand point - absolutely. Many good places they could take Rey and the story with her going bad. But realisty is they simply won't because of who Rey is and what she represents to the franchise.

I'm afraid I simply do not think that we can read as much into this as you are. Why is also why I do disagree.

Rey is the protagonist, sure. And we've seen 1/3 of the trilogy. What you see as "obvious" may not be what others see, and it is not necessarily true as well. You don't get to so easily make absolute claims like that with so little information. That's just silly. And it's still off topic.

Read into what they've done, now, over 3 movies and Kennedy's comments about how important female leads are AND the writers of Rogue One tweeting about how the good guys are womena nd minorities and the villains are white men? Ya, nothing to "read into" there.

Sorry, its obvious they have they this message/agenda they want to push it (like it or dislike it) its there. ANd it applies to this topic because if affects how they push the story forward - a producer group/creative group that see's featuring women in strong, leading roles as important isn't going to turn the FIRST of these women int he villain.

Didn't you know that it is actually George Lucas under a different screen name?

But anyway, I completely agree with everything you have said. Do you think Rey going to the dark side ensures Kylo goes to the light? I feel like there has to be a yin and yang type situation....

I don't think that the balance of the Force is necessarily a numbers game like that. It might be an interesting idea they could toy around with though, for sure!

I guess my argument wasn't even with the balance of the force, I'm just thinking from a production standpoint, if Rey goes over to the Dark Side, then it seems like the light doesn't have that "main" character anymore. Unless if Finn decides to play a much bigger role...

Either way, super interesting to think about!

Sure, from that point it could be the case.

Either way, I think a light side Kylo is the most likely thing, far more even than dark side Rey. But both at the same time could be interesting.
