There's also an entire novel discussing his attempts to learn about averting death with the dark side of the force and palpatine's uncertainty over whether he'd actually killed him or not.

Those novels are no longer canon I know but it doesn't mean they haven't drawn from them.

i dont believe this is plagueis. there is a posibility that it could be. he saved himself from death but he is very disfigured since palatine killed him, but i also think there could be a possibility this snoke guy is the emperor. he brought himself back from the dead but is severely disfigured because of the explosion of the death star. the reason snoke could also be so tall is because the emperor needed prostetic legs like darth maul did back in the clone wars tv series. that would explain why he would be taller. just something to think about. well anyway i think this guy is totally new and not the emperor or plagueis.

It may be possible that Snoke is mistakenly miscast in the wrong movie, believing he is a member of the Harry Potter franchise instead. ;)

I didn't read all the topic messages yet but I wanted to add that I think "Snoke" is either a agent of Plaguis or a image of Darth Plaguis himself.
I wouldn't think a actor like Benicio Del Toro would take a major role in the ST if it's not for playing Darth Plaguis or a character directly related to the First Order command/Sith.
A clue I'd add is the obvious damage to Snoke's skull. It looks beaten or cracked. It's common knowledge that Plaguis survived a murder attempt or the damage(scars) may be from Sheev Palpatine.
Benicio Del Toro might be a character but I'd think he'd want a big role.
But considering an actor like Max Von Sydow can do a 2min scene then who knows???...

The question here is that after seeing the movie do you believe Snoke is Plagueis. I know it's a fine line, but people complain about merging threads. So if you have an opinion you want to post here, you should include evidence from the movie that convinces you one way or the other. If your opinion doesn't come from the movie, just post in the Plagueis thread. Otherwise we'll just merge the two. Thanks.

I have no horse in this race and that was the case before and after I saw TFA. I have never read the old EU, now Legends, so, for me, Plagueis is just Palpatine' line in the opera house in ROTS.

Could Snoke be Plagueis? Sure. Could he be someone else? Sure. All I want is a good character with clear motivation, I don't care either way. :)

personally, i sincerely doubt that Snoke is Plagueis. why?

firstly, during production they kept saying that Snoke is a new character. a new character. get it? a new character.

secondly, during the movie itself Maz makes a distinction between the Sith and the First Order. they're not connected in any way other than they're both evil.

on that second point (which is the strongest evidence against Snoke being a former Sith lord), i would put money on Snoke mocking the Sith during the course of this trilogy for their arrogant and foolish ways. Snoke has been around for a while and was probably waiting for the Sith to kill themselves off before rising to power himself.

No. Darth Plagueis is dead. "His apprentice killed him in his sleep" < Episode III quote. ;)

There will be no PT referenced characters in SW from now on. Even Luke and Leia will be gone by the end of 8.

I believe that snoke is Darth Plagueis, it would tie in everything from the PT to the ST. The very similar theme songs, being discribed as "wise"(Darth Plagueis the wise), and being around for a very long time. If not then he could be an ancient Sith Lord.

It's obvious he is one of the Engineers from the Alien Franchise ...

Palps came across him trying to gen-engineer "The Chosen One" ...

And zapped him with his Force Lightening ...

He then retreated to the shadows and eventually tried again by making Rey ...

The BIG question is why does he keep dumping his creations off on desolate desert planets? Is it like the Ghola program from Dune? Where they need to experience certain stimuli to "Awaken"???

    :D

I don't know much about Plagueis - except the line mentioned by Palpatine during the Opera Scene, however, I am a huge fan of John Williams - and the music of Star Wars is as much a part of the story as the plot and characters.

One of the elements of Williams' score is that he has unique themes for particular characters. When the Emperor arrives at the Death Star II, we are treated to a variation of the Imperial March, and then the Emperor's theme (choir of Monks etc).

This is repeated in Episode 1 when Lord Sidious first appears as a hologram, although, with a slight difference. This is to inform the audience that Sidious becomes the Emperor.

So, for me, the biggest clue of Snoke's identity is the thematic music that is used for Snoke. It is a direct call back to the Opera scene, when Palpatine is talking about Plagueis the Wise.

Anything I do right now is pure guesswork, but I'm leaning towards him being Darth Plagueis. The music, the appearance, the quote from the novel where he talks about the galactic empire rising and falling. Also the music from RotS is really similar to Snoke's theme. It's highly possible it's Plagueis OR it's this Admiral from Aftermath who speaks in a very similar manner. Now the reason I think it can't be Admiral and Plagueis is because there's no telling visual description in Aftermath about his appearance. And the way Snoke looks, it'd be weird to not say.

If Plagauis ressurected he would transend the Sith being something new and more powerful. He would have a new name like Anakin becomming Vader. He did not finish Kylo's traing cause well his last dark side servant Palpatine killed him! Probably a bit weary of fully training an apprentice that will eventually want to kill him.

Considering only the New Canon, nothing tells us Plagueis was Palpatine's master.

During the opera scene, Palpatine just tells Plagueis story, and says Anakin that Plagueis was murdered by his apprentice. Palpatine never says "I am the Apprentice" nor "I killed myself Darth Plagueis".

Later, when Anakin has become Vader and stands on knees in front of Palpatine, the Emperor says something like "Only one of us has achieved the way of immortality", he doesn't say "my master has achieved the way of immortality".

When I watched the movie for the second time, I was very careful when Snoke appeared. I noticed that his eyes and mouth are very similar from Maz Kanata's eyes and mouth. Only their eyes and their mouth : because their faces are strongly different (Maz has a big head, and a flat nose, where Snoke has a long face and a prominent nose).
    Dis anybody else notice that?
Is it caused by a CGI artefact ?

I guess that if he did manage to resurrect himself after being killed by his apprentice in his sleep... there could have been some severe side effects to achieving that.

Which might explain why he looks so terrible... a side effect of bringing himself back from the dark ether.

I kind of hope it isn't him though.

Yeah that's great, Sheeve might've been a big southpark fan and fell in love with the episode where the boy get's ball's in his knees to make him taller, and wanted to carry out his true fantasy in becoming the greatest basketball player the sith have ever envisioned.

He is mentioned as Palpatine's master in the Tarkin novel, which is canon.
