Palpatine was one of the shining stars of the PT in my opinion. No reason to think that an emperor type character won't end up a fan favorite

They are emulating the OT, not the PT... and one could hardly say Palps qualified as a fan fave in Episodes IV - VI.

So does that mean we can't compare Kylo Ren to Darth Maul either?

Don't take the focus on the OT too far. They're taking what they like and ditching what they don't

I agree that it's the cyborg who is now 'Uber' but not the second photo as I believe Kylo Ren is the apprentice type character. :)

Yes and what worked about Maul was his design... not much else... the biggest crime was giving him all of a few scenes in ONE movie to develop before disposing of him. I doubt we will see any villains, especially marquee ones, only last one film. Don't see how that's pessimistic at all. Logical, really.

Maul is a live and could always come back. Last we saw him he was a thrall of the Emperor again. How crazy would it be to drop right into the action of ep7 and have an established Ming the Merciless, I mean MVS, I mean EMPEROR THRAWN with Captain Phasma "holding Maul's leash."

Since "Son of Dathomir" is canon, Maul isn't even the emperor's slave anymore. He was freed and he and mother Talzin plotted a scheme agains Sidious, but failed. Talzin sacrificed her live so that Maul could escape. For now, canon says that Maul is neither dead nor captive, but also stript of his base of power after the destruction of the shadow collective.

    10 bucks on Rebels appearance.

Errr....not being knowledgeable in the EU, but last I saw of Darth Maul was him cut in two falling down a long shaft to what looked like imminent death, never to reappear in any subsequent films......my money would be on Maul never being seen again on screen..... :)

I would be surprised if he's back for the film but he escaped and got prosthetics in The Clone Wars cartoon which is Canon.

Both the Clone Wars series and the "Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir" comics (that continue Maul's Clone Wars story) are canon and therefore part of the official Star Wars story.

Darth Maul better not be brought back. I want an original villain on screen (Darth Plagueis would be an exception though).

Well, TECHNICALLY he'd kinda count as an original villain, since we've never seen him on-screen before. And given the fact that the old EU is gone, they could re-work a lot of aspects of his character if they wanted to.

So stick with me here, but we're told that the Serkis character is zombie like right? What if he is Ezra? I mean we don't know what happens to him (although speculation is he dies) and so far he seems to be pretty powerful and he doesn't have much training if any. Thoughts?

So it was stated the George Lucas wanted to put Darth Bane and Darth Revan in season 3 of the clone wars in the Mortis story arc, but chose not to at the last minute. Andy Sekis (Uber) may be playing someone ancient and powerful, but not necessarily evil. Max Von Sondow may be the big bad, and we a pretty much agree Driver will be playing the Vader archetype (Kylo Ren). It was stated that the revelation of certain character names would shock hardcore fans but may not be of any importance to the casual fan. I believe that someone like Revan may be the powerful 'Uber'; not evil or good and the Sandow character that makes Pazuzu (sp?) look like a pu$$y will be the evil master.

Not to mention season 6 of the clone wars, especially the Yoda arc, is said to have an impact on The Force awakens, most likely to do with the Nature of the force (Darth Bane was also revealed in the Episode Sacrifice).

    Food For Thought

I've kinda been thinking the same thing. Maybe during the course of Rebels, something happens that causes him to fall and sets him up as the Palpatine-type villain for the new trilogy. Seems about as plausible as the Plagueis theory to me.
