ok her dress was a tad boring but it felt like star wars to me. And I really liked her Makeup. She looked so much like Cara Delevigne with those strong eyebrows, hollow cheeks and she totally nailed this resting b* face, she looked very pissed off and evil... You could tell right away that she was symphazing with the enemy, I am glad they didn't use a CGI character.

    Indeed.

    1. What I liked aboutFinn's jacket was that it was worn by each of the three 'light side' leads: first Poe, then Finn, then Rey and finally Finn again. I remember Abrams talking on one of the press tours almost a year ago that Star Wars typically features 'cool jackets'. This time the jacket had a symbolical dimension as well in that it emphasized friendship and belonging.

    2. Rey's first outfit when she's scavenging was that it recalled old Ralph Mcquarrie concept art.
    [IMG] [IMG]
    3. Rey's outfit, without the goggles, turban and backpack, recalls the design of Jedi robes. Especially the two "x" split stola design is a classical feature of Jedi style clothing. It is also beautifull that they designed Rey's stola to be extra long so that it waves it desert wind. It helps tell you something about the desolate place she is in. The fact that they are also raggs tells us something about the emotional state of her character and her present living conditions:
    [IMG] [IMG]
    4. I also liked the design of the resistance fighters, some of their hats recalled 1940s civilian hats worn in Europe. Perhaps an effort at making the Resistance look more like the WOII resistance. Also their uniforms consciously recall those of World War II allied soldiers.
    5. Of course the First Order officer uniforms have an ever more third reich feel to them. Especially the baggy pants and rank insignia on the sleeves.
    [IMG] [IMG]
    6. The new stormtrooper design was also very clever. Chiang said he remembered George Lucas speak about Stormtroopers and how they're design philosophy was similar to the battle droid, both recalling humanoid skeletons. Consequenly Chiang decided to make this skeletal feature even more prominent in the episode VII design. It also looks more functional and logical which by itself makes it look more menacing. Especially the webbing slots and features and the dark void linking mouth to visor:
    7. Luke's costume desing recalled both Obi Wan and Merlin, but has a silver gray taint to it. Perhaps a reflection of his current emotional state. But also features light white taints which have never been so prominent in jedi costume before:

lol that must be very accurate fan art, because that leaked before the actual image of Luke in his Jedi robes in that photo shoot.

i really love how they went back to McQuarrie's designs for a lot of stuff in this film!

also, re: the stormtroopers ~ i read somewhere that the original costumes were brittle and uncomfortable, so they worked a lot on those aspects too. love love love Chiang's new design. even more than the originals.

    very cool stuff!

Exactly. You can actually see this in the movie. The stormtroopers now have free movement and are no longer limited by the design features of the armour. They actually move like modern soldiers (by the way, any of those soldiers running down from that ramp and firing could be Finn :p).

Well yeah because you can get custom figures made and the person probably based it off of that leaked figure .

speaking of Finn, i just saw the movie yesterday and he's not firing when his friend gets hit. so Abrams really did make it quite possible that he never managed to get a shot in the whole time.

but yeah, i really loved how the stormtroopers could run and get blasted and do flips. couldn't really do that in ANH because you'd wreck the suit for every take and that was too expensive.

Hmmm I was under the impression that he was firing. Perhaps the image is too quick and I misindentified the flashy red light and white flashlight on his weapon as muzzle flashes. But he was in a firing position, he was aiming. But I agree, Abrams might have been so conscious not to explicitly show Finn firing his weapon.

As for Leia's outfit. I have mixed feeling about this particular outfit. I can imagine Carry Fisher told the press she looked like a semi-stylish gas station attendant:

hahaha ~ yeah, i think she got shortchanged. i get what they were going for: simple, practical, efficient. but it's not a very flattering costume.

... It was a bit unfair, Han got to wear his cool jacket signature look and Leia had to wear this. Also her hair color bothered me and black eyeliner has always been a key to her signature look so I missed that too. She is no longer royalty- I get that but she does look so much more like Leia with darker brunett hair and eyeliner.

i thought letting her hair go very light and silvery was actually a good choice. i don't imagine Leia would dye her hair and she is at an age where that color just looks natural.

Lol, to think it was her complaint during ESB - wearing not flattering clothes - and then Lucas had her wearing the slave bikini for ROTJ lol.

I think her costume in TFA makes her almost look like a potato sack instead of the cool stuff she wore in The OF ...
