costume choices and characters

It reminds me of Luke's ESB one in many ways (possibly foreshadowing, hmm), with some Han-aesthetics thrown in as well.

 

You are right and it was the right choice- storywise - not to dye hair dark brunett.

 

But the production did dye her hair right ?

I guess they chose a darker color from the one Carrie normally has been using lately but not as dark as the picture above.

this uniform or the resistance admiral is quite similar to the old republic officer uniform from the final scene of revenge of the sith. It has the similar s-split:

 

You also see his hair coming from underneath the helmet. Perhaps in the original scene he was meant to take his helmet off. Shakespearean.



But I do wish to note that if a picture of a scene appears to be filmed from a different direction it doesn't necessarily mean it isn't in the final cut. They usually film multiple camera angles all at once to facilitate and the editing process. They can pick which shot is most interesting.

I also think below costume for Kylo Ren would have been pretty silly:

 

There's a reason Kylo's outfit is the way it is, from a filming stand-point too.
It has different layers and textures due to it being all black, which depending on the cameras/lighting can hide a lot of the detail in the design. Remember his role within the FO is that of a rogue commander, a force imbued interrogator, so it makes sense that he stands out from the rest of the armored troops too.
