But if we are on the topic of good sampling, would you seriously consider sampling persons right after a movie as any better at maintaining a representative sample?

I do not disagree that studios pay big money for polls. However, the issue I find problematic is that there appears to be an underlying assumption creating a bias against the audience scores on sites like RT. That underlying assumption seems to be that those who gave the negative scores are not a representative sample of the average movie viewer. But such an assumption seems biased.

People don't realize how trying to "prove" their opinion is the "right one" is just a reflection of their own insecurities. It's kinda funny and silly, really.
And it gets really sad when people start talking about "true fans" and sh*t like that.

My only bias is science. comScore is a scientific measure of what the audience thinks. An online poll isn't scientific. It's odd to me you're more skeptical of a poll that all studios use and trust over online polls that pretty much ever reliable source has said are problematic.

I too am completely ok with science! :)

My issue is that you have a distrust of online polling because it is likely not representative. However, you claim that polling audience members right after a movie is more representative. I am only asking for scientific reasons (or statistical) to convince someone like myself, that it is indeed the case! :)

Because as far as I can see, poling an audience right after a movie is no better. If one is polling a theater to which many fans had gathered, then that can be biased. Or, the theater chosen might be from an area that does not have a significant Star Wars fan base. Then that result would also be biased. Then there is also the issue of accuracy of the answers given in such a context. The individual answering the question might feel pressure to give a positive review. Or, they may still not have a clear opinion of what they saw.

Due to such reasons, I do not see how you can justify putting more faith in a poll taken as audience leaves over an online poll.

Suppose that this movie is indeed doing fine! Would you therefore conclude that this movie is indeed sound in its narrative design?

Statisticians far smarter than you and me are being paid a lot of money to get those polls right. If they were wrong the studios wouldn't be paying them. Studios have been paying them for decades so they trust the numbers. The margin of error for these polls is +-2.5%. They're not missing the number by 30% which would put it in line with the RT user score.

I do not know why you think I am not knowledgeable in statistics, but lets put that aside :)

I am not specifically pointing out that there is something wrong with the statistical formulations. We both agreed that the issue was in the sampling. The choice of sample, the methods to make sure that they are representative, are not completely a part of the mathematical formulations of statistics. It requires one to understand the nature of human behavior, possibility of biases, context, and so forth.

From that perspective, I do not see how we can rely on exit audience polling as any more accurate than online polling (with sufficient safeguards to prevent automated spamming, which almost all major sites do maintain).

    > poll about a movie they just saw at theatres
    > no bias present whatsoever

    Top kek lmao

It’s much easier to say you love a movie when you’re being pressured than it is to say you hated it and appear like a negative Nancy.

All the prequels got a higher user score on RT than TLJ nuff said.

Less staying power finacially too. Hopefully this pressures Disney that fans do indeed vote with their wallets and refuse to do repeat viewings of this travesty of a Star Wars film.

Because the online polls don’t agree with his biased viewpoint that the movie is well liked by the majority.

Really that simple really if it were the other way around he would be arguing in favour of online polling.

Agree to disagree. If that's your position it's going to be impossible for me to change your mind.
It's an apples/oranges comparison that even the author of the article admits he doesn't understand. Do you have an issue with the Deadline article or do you just like that link for the sensationalist headline?

‘But you can see the discrepancies: by now, “Force Awakens” had banked $363 million. “Jedi” has $278 million. And the gap is widening every day.’

Too early to call the film a flop?

I read Roger Friedman & his site. I don't read Deadline & I'm not familiar with it. Please share the article. I didn't see it in this thread.

nobody said it wasn't doing fine. Its weird to see people unable to enjoy something unless they convince themselves that they hold the position of the majority.

    Certainly not a financial flop
    Agreed. I'd cash a check for a $278m (after ~5 days) flop.

Lol when you take into account budget and marketing and the fact sequels usually do better than the the first movie in a trilogy.

Yeah it’s a flop compared to TFA awakens imo

I believe that this statement is inaccurate. If I’m not mistaken sequels typically do not meet the financial numbers of the original. Long before TLJ ever came out the expectations on TLJ was that it was not going to have the financial success of TFA. Even at a slower pace than TFA, and with people not making the film, TLJ will still make Disney quite a hefty profit.
