Don't Fall for the Backlash Hype: The Last Jedi is Huge Hit

This is the biggest problem with the internet. Reviewers. I hate them. Everyone wants be a reviewer. If I was a reviewer reviewing one of the most important films in history that is part of the most important film franchise in history....I probably would not risk it by giving it a low score.

That is how I see it. They all copped out. Cowards.

 

Except several reviewers have given it a negative-lukewarm score. 2.5-3/5 which RT still tallies as positive.

Yup people who disagree with you=cowards. And insinuating they are bought again with "I probably would not risk it by giving it a low score" despite the offered reasoning.

Yeah and the second film vastly underperformed the first. Let's not ignore evidence that disproves our theories now.

 

I am not insinuating they are 'bought'. Only you keep harping on about that point.

Watch Mark Kermode's review on the TLJ and his review of the TFA. He said something very important in the latter.

 

No these are not just reviewers, but certified critics. People who are educated to be critics and who work at trusted and verifiable media outlets. There is a difference between a reviewer on the internet who does so in his free time, and a professional who works at The New York Times or Empire. Furthermore, these verifiable critic platforms know that they should not send a star wars fan to the reviews. They send someone who is independent and who can judge the movie on its true merrits. They blasted Rogue One and the prequels. For good reason. I agree with their criticisms, but that doesn't make me hate those movies or claim that they are the worst thing ever.

I am extremely proud that critics applaud this movie but perhaps it is also an indication that Star Wars has become a bit 'high brow'. Very enjoyable by intellectuals, but perhaps less so by viewers who are less knowledgable about movie-making and storytelling. I think that The Force Awakens was already a difficult movie with many layers, but I think that TLJ is extremely difficult, especially because it inverts so many tropes and itheir corresponding expectations. There are so many references and it plays so joyfully with Campbell's work. Whereas the previous movies were somehow following The Heroes Journey as if it were a blue print, this one TLJ is turning it around on its head and doing something completely unexpected.

That is not to say that I'm an intellectual because I love it, or that you aren't because you don't.

 

Being a critic/reviewer is a job, and they are doing it. And you ignored the point I made where not all the critics were positive or even lukewarm or "meh" about the film.

you cited one guy who agrees with you. And who dances around the same points you've made. It's not the weekend, less children are out (and by the way they have something called school with probably stops them from heading to the cinema at 5/6pm), TL.j is the second film in a franchise.

I wonder why you aren't citing from Forbes, or deadline...oh wait they are being POSITIVE about the film BO and citing and explaining the reasons I have above.

Its also different weeks, this is the week of the 13th, you're comparing it to TFA's 20th December week. A school free one.

Also fail to point out how TlJ is hammering the competition and they are doing very badly.

I don't really value the views of reviewers of films regardless of how well they are educated. Yes I have read and taken note of what reviewers have said on many occasions, but the only review I take notice of is my own.

I don't know these people. Why should I trust their opinion ?

I like Mark Kermode who I mentioned earlier, but I tend to agree and disagree with his views in equal measure.

Based on 'user' reviews, TLJ should not be getting a 93 % score with critics. It does not make sense. TLJ is not a good film from an 'intellectual' point of view. I could live with 65 % but not 93 %.

 

Hard to take anything serious from a person who has username after a racist.

 

Backlash to backlash... Good grief, this is some next-level Internet thing.

 

I disagree with RT a lot of the time. They do take 2.5-3/5 as solid positive reviews. A lot of people aren't giving TLJ solid 5/5s here. I personally think TLJ is 7.5 so 75-80% would agree with me.

At the end of the day, I think the 'user' reviews is a fair representation of the film. If you like it more then fair enough. If you like it less then fine. But on balance 53-54 % is the best it deserves....which is its score on most sites.

The critics score is an anomaly. How you explain that I don't know.

But the film will make money. SW 10 will make money. SW 11-13.....hmmm...not so sure. Apart from kids, who would to see them ? They will be just throw away movies so there will never be an emotional attachment to them like with the OS.

Disney misunderstood their audience here.

 

Let's just agree to disagree on this. We are going back and forth. Talking about RT as a whole and future of the franchise.

I think kids will have an emotional attachment. People who grew up with PT have an emotional attachment.

No offense, but I don't think highly of RT's user review ratings - or really any such movie review hang out.

Critics nor user reviews mean much to me because I don't think a pile of people are inherently looking for what I'm looking for in a film.

If I want to know if I will like it, I'll watch it.
If I want to know if it did well with others, then I'll look at money.

I don't look at the reviews or the money to determine if I like it, though.

I liked TLJ.
It's a damn well put together film that I will enjoy deconstructing.

You would give it 4/5 out of 5 and I would give it 1/2 out of 5.

So a 50 -54 % score rating for TLJ is about right then which is what most sites are giving it.

What is the fuss all about ?

 

Probably posted somewhere earlier by multiple people, but TLJ could have been much much worse and it'd still have done about the same opening week.

 

Riding it's coat tails on the Hype from TFA, ofc it will do good in first week. But if all that it is, expect to see another BFSW2.
