But they can release a teaser a week after the SB (when there's really not going to be much going on) that's 55 secs of footage and is 1:35 long (logos, parental notice or whatever that green band is, and the date will fill up the rest). It eventually plays in front of B&TB as well as gets a week's worth of attention

You then release a full 3:00 trailer at SWC which will also get a full weeks worth of stories for free.

That's three weeks after the title and 9 weeks before celebration.

RO has "breathed" (KK code for making a billion) and the E8 title has been revealed. Spending money on a SB ad makes no sense, but dropping a trailer that Thursday or whatever after the SB when football is over, baseball hasn't started, basketball and hockey are in the midseason doldrums, and Trump as POTUS isn't a true novelty anymore....

I just think they can bury the needle on TLJ with a teaser well in advance of SWC in February, then do it again in April.

Rogue One had it's first trailer in April (and a lot of people were surprised that was so early). Then had the BTS thing released in June, first full trailer in August, second in October....

That was an 8 week spread on every event. We are 6 weeks out from RO opening and got the title and now with basically 12 more to go until SWC, I think there's a even chance of getting a teaser before SWC. I do think they'll drop something big at SWC, but I don't think it'll be the first look at the film. I think we'll 100% get screenshots (maybe an EW spread) or a teaser before SWC.

Americans are officially weird. They watch sports events just to see tv commercials and half time shows which they value more than the actual sports event.

The Super Bowl was a sporting event that has metastasized into a circus. Corporations have pumped it up into a food, drink, TV, etc. holiday that's a big money maker after Thanksgiving and Christmas.

But yeah, we're a tad weird (see POTUS Trump).

So no photographs from the movie or any footage will be released in the next 12 weeks before SWC?

    Really?

    That's what you're sure about?

We can make this interesting if you want to do more than snark.

I'm saying stills or footage will be released before SWC. 100% positive.

You're saying nothing more will be seen until April.

    Keep dreaming.

And yes I'm sure no footage will be released before SWC. But images, yes.

Deadline suggest at best, Pirates 5 and GotG 2 MIGHT get promos at the superbowl. Those are the only two disney properties that MIGHT get coverage.

There are zero legitimate rumours of a VIII SB trailer.

Just to put into perspective how insignificant the SB seems to be for trailers, deadline also suggest none of the DC properties coming up will advertise at the SB, and they are in dire need of good word of mouth.

I agree that we'll most likely get a teaser sometime during Star Wars Celebration Orlando in April. However, I just can't shake off the feeling of how epic it would be if we got the teaser next month during the Super Bowl.

Imagine this: You're sitting with your friends and family in the living room. You have one half of people who are there for the football game, one half of people who are there for the halftime show and then of course the other half are there for the Star Wars: The Last Jedi teaser trailer. Everybody's rocking out to the halftime show, munching on Doritos and Pepsi and playing with toy lightsabers and then finally comes the teaser, which would bring in very big ratings, potentially bigger ratings than the game and/or even the halftime show. It would be a win-win for everyone :)

I definitely think we will not get a teaser during the Super Bowl. April at Celebration is the most likely time. However, while I'm not expecting it, it would not surprise me if we get a teaser sooner if they have something different planned for Celebration

one of the suggestions is that celebration will be "all about remembering carrie". If that were the case, so its not a normal celebration lineup, i could imagine a scenario where they drop the teaser the day before celebration and then the whole three days are carrie centric.

Personally, while i understand the need to remember carrie, I can't see them devoting all three days to just remembering. So that's basically why i think Celebration, VIII panel will likely be the spot it drops.

I wouldn't want to be in charge. You need to give Fisher her due, but you don't want to turn the whole event into a wake.

There might be some events devoted to Carrie for sure, but I don't think that will be the focus of the Celebration. I know that fans are organizing Drowning in Moonlight Gala devoted to Carrie with proceeds going to her favorite charity. She will certainly be remembered at every panel where they talk about The Last Jedi.

However, I agree that The Last Jedi panel will be where they drop teaser/trailer.

This. Fans expect that Carrie Fisher is remembered but they also expect celebration. It's a tough thing.

Remembering Carrie will be a big part of Celebration but I don't think it will dominate it. It would not surprise me if they showed a Celebration only teaser or a BTS video and we get a teaser released before Celebration. I'm not expecting that but I could see it as a possibility.

We've got well over 2 months until Celebration. I think dropping the title so quickly after RO points to a teaser before SWC. Most disagree with me.

SWC isn't some sacred gathering for LFL. Neither of the last two have featured "first look footage" of either of the last two films. They have released new footage, but with the movie landscape so crowded this year, they might feel like they should do promotional stuff earlier and more often. I think that's not a strong possibility, but it's one possibility.

The other strategy that is much more likely IMO, is trailer teaser clips appearing two weeks or less (even a few days) before SWC.
(For the record, I HATE those things---I'm talking about 5 second or so clips from the trailer, like LFL released before the TFA debuted).

I could see them releasing four of those: maybe just one of Rey & Luke early on, a quick shot of an awing firing, an alien, and maybe the funeral (a wide shot---like that TFA shot of the FO in the second teaser & main trailer) none would have dialogue or music

That would grab headlines for the entire week before SWC, have the press ready to report thoroughly on the trailer (which would be released the first day---Thursday, around lunchtime I would guess.) that way they get all of Thursday's news cycle on the west coast and most on the east coast.

Friday night news and Saturday news aren't seen/read by nearly as much Thursday night.

If you give everyone a big headsup that the trailer will be shown on say Monday before SWC, release 20 seconds in 5 sec clips, you dominate the entertainment world from Monday until Sunday.

They can't withhold the trailer they show at SWC from the public. (Assuming they don't release a full 2 minute teaser or whatever beforehand. That RO BTS was shown on ABC and there had been a long teaser released in April (the line between teaser and trailer really has blurred lately and RO was the biggest offender in that regard...not a complaint really. I very much wish there were some rules in place about what defines a teaser and trailer) and because RO had two distinct pieces of publicity film available at the time, the teaser or whatever for RO they showed the crowd at SWC pretty much stayed off the web. If they show a trailer for TLJ at SWC and only there, they won't be able to contain it.

So they go with the flow, eliminate any question about a trailer release, throw out the clips to prime the pump, and give the attendance the trailer live and then release it 15 minutes later. (I'm not going to comment on streaming the event)

Again, I admit they are most likely to wait to show footage at SWC, but the clip strategy is something they've done and could certainly happen again. I think they'll be fighting the NCAA tournament in the run up to SWC, as well as MLB opening day/early season action. The NFL draft will be shortly afterSWC. Fantasy baseball will be distracting a lot of people in the three weeks before SWC.

Also, several big films will release between March 15 and April 13.

The decision may be made that they will do more to promote SWC than a lot of us suspect.

Sorry for the rambling post, but there are so many moving parts once we get to March, the strategy for promoting TLJ may not be "release 2 minute teaser at SWC."

It'll be interesting to see how they navigate things.

Disney have made 2 star wars films so far, and both times the pattern has been.... title, then teaser within a month.

unless my googling is off, TFA released the first teaser 3 weeks after the title. Rogue one title was announced in March, with the teaser in the first week of april.

It's their biggest film of the year.. and the ball is rolling. I'm not fussed if the first teaser comes at celebration.. but i don't think we have to wait that long.

popping the title on the 23rd Jan... 2 weeks before over 100 million people will be watching a major sporting event?
If they are sticking to the regular pattern, then the teaser will be out within 2 weeks from now.. in which case it'd be stupid NOT to do it during the Patriots/Falcons game.

They announced the Rogue One title in March 2015

They released the first teaser in April 2016.

    Sorry

Now they did show a concept teaser (filming hadn't started yet when they announced the title) and only showed it to the fans at SWC in 2015.

I think spending 5 million on TLJ Super Bowl ad isn't their strategy. The first TLJ will get enough attention without the super bowl.

I personally think they could very well drop a teaser on Thursday of the week after the Super Bowl. The parade would have happened and we'd have very little sporting or entertainment news happening at that point.

I see your logic, but fighting for attention with the game and all the other ads isn't something a movie that's 10 months away needs to do or spend money by doing.

no need to apologize, you have verified what i said.

a teaser is a teaser. easy to get confused these days as 'teasers' seem to be trailer length. weeks after the title announcement for R1.. there was a teaser. both SW films.. footage was released very shortly after announcing the title. Whether i realized that in my original post, or if i got the years wrong when i looked it up and lucked out with the short celebration teaser.... that knowledge dies with me! :p

to be honest, i'm not gonna argue with you there as your absolutely right. it's 10 months away and they don't need to spend millions on a superbowl commercial.

there is no reason to do it.. none. a big waste of dollars, and the film will probably still do $1.5B in ticket sales without doing it.

i still reckon they will though lol ;)

We are only a little over a month away from SWC Orlando, so I dont think we will get a teaser trailer until SWC.

Deadpool 2 hasn't started filming, yet Fox released a teaser that captured what fans loved in the last and next movie, was an unexpected treat for fans, and wasn't free yet was freely given and part of a way the company made money.

    It didn't confuse fans.

RO breathed just fine. A teaser for TLJ had no chance of choking it.

LFL choked. Again. Because of greed and incompetence.

KK says LFL loves their fans.

That rain she's talking about sure is yellow and warm as it misses my umbrella and only hits my shins.

    Odd.
