Her brother said that. Kathleen Kennedy denied it two days ago, saying he must have been confused.

I believe that Leia will die in Episode 8 (killed by Hux) and that it has been always planned that way, that Carrie filmed Leia's death scene for Ep8 and so her tragic death has not changed the script for Episode 9 in any way. This will explain the continuos contraddictions on Leia's role and Carrie's presence that we have heard in the last months... They can't obviously tell the truth that Leia dies in TLJ until tue movie comes out...

I'm not so sure. If Leia was supposed to die in VIII, why would they have emergency talks in January to make changes to IX?

I think she was set to appear in IX, but will now only be referenced. Unless they made changes to VIII (there were rumors that she would be attacked in VIII, but somehow survive... but maybe no longer?).

I think Leia will go out in a blaze of glory in 8.

I don't think Kylo will directly be responsible, but perhaps indirectly.

Im kind of hoping the plan was to have her Die in episode 8 and they have already filmed it completing the characters arc before Carries sad passing.

I was originally against this, but after listening to how Mark Hamill wanted the Han Solo death scene in TFA to go down (Leia senses it, rushes to Starkiller; as does Luke; neither can stop it, but both can witness his death) I wouldn't be against her pulling off a move we've seen/read increasingly in the new canon (though, totally from the perspective of outside of the ship involved, unless her in-universe death was planned ahead of TLJ, which I doubt): she will take out a certain ship to open a path for the others to escape/save someone.

For instance, people haven't been so forgiving of Kylo's "weakness" in TFA (due to being shot by Chewie's bowcaster, which the film went out of its way to state is extremely powerful), so what if he defeated Luke after Luke senses in the skies above Ahch-To Leia's final stand that saved the planet from being attacked, or something?

Complete guesswork on my behalf, but if it seems like a natural fit for the character, then I'm all for it.

I think Kylo will be busy with Luke and Rey, but he may have something to do with the attack on Crait. Supposedly this is a longtime rebellion source of money and minerals, so he may be aware of it and supplies the info to his bosses to attack the place. If this leads to Leia's death, then he would have responsibility for it.

As for killing Leia directly as he does Han, I just don't think they'll go that far again. It would feel simultaneously redundant and revolting.

The closest they will go would be to have his ship fire on hers. I'd like to see Leia pull a Commander Sato. Something that really shows her heroic character and toughness, that she's the daughter of Anakin Skywalker. She'll sacrifice herself.

I'd rather that kind of ending instead of her being injured the whole movie and then wakes up just long enough to say goodbye with Luke. Reunions in war are few and far between.

    Oh, sorry. My bad.

I think that's more of a function of the amount of time between trilogies and that each character arc is completed in six movies or less.

If you have a character that lasts more than six movies, they have overstayed their welcome for sure.

Obi-wan & Anakin have appeared in 6 films, but only three or four movies in one particular form: Vader vs human, Man vs. Force Ghost.

I see what your saying, but I disagree that it is some sort of GOTtype thing.

GOT surprises viewers when it kills off characters because people expect their contribution to the narrative while alive to be longer than Martin planned. The deaths and loss of the dead characters are the effect Martin has chosen.

SW does this, true. SW deaths definitely propel the narrative, but I don't think the absence of characters effects the narrative the same way GOT does. Kenobi's absence doesn't really anything in OT because Yoda trains Luke.etc.

I see your point, and the more it rattles around in my head...yeah...there are similarities. Interesting....

Thanks for clarifying. Food for thought....

You're definitely right that GOT's death are more shocking in nature compared to a SW death where it is usually at the end of some character arc. But I will give SW credit in that when it is all said and done you will have a 9 Movie Saga Narrative with essentially different leads in each trilogy and that is tough to pull off.

I did see an interview with George RR Martin and he said there is one character he will never kill or his wife said she would divorce him. :D

If Carrie's not gonna appear in Episode IX, then I (unfortunately) think they will kill her off in The Last Jedi. Here's how I picture it all happening...
    • The fight between the First Order and the Resistance slowly comes to an end.
    • Captain Phasma targets Finn and fires at him, but Leia shields him, takes the shot and is killed.
    • Finn - in a fit of rage - runs after Phasma and the Stormtroopers with a blaster of his own and begins firing at the Stormtroopers.
    • Rose (KMT) tries to go after him, but Poe stops her and tells her to get help for Leia.
    • Poe grabs a blaster of his own as well and helps Finn kill the Stormtroopers.
    • They make it to Phasma and the three have a little blaster duel.
    • Poe receives a minor injury (maybe like a shot in the arm or leg?) and Finn becomes angry enough to kill Phasma himself.
    • The film ends with Rose announcing to the galaxy that Leia has passed away. C3PO is by her side. As she speaks, we cut from one character to another for reactions.
    • Finn is mourning in private and at the same time, shocked that he managed to kill Phasma.
    • Poe is recovering and watching the announcement with BB-8 by his side.
    • Members of the Resistance are watching the announcement as well. Many of them are shown crying and mourning.
    • General Hux and some First Order officers are watching too. They're happy that Leia is dead, but now they plan on targeting Finn for killing Phasma.
    • Luke - who I believe will be off of Ahch-Tu by the end of the film and searching for Rey, who I believe will be kidnapped by Kylo Ren after their duel - finds out as he, Chewbacca and R2-D2 fly through the galaxy on the Falcon.
    • The three of them, especially Luke, react in dismay.
    • Kylo Ren is watching the announcement as well and is the last person we see reacting to Leia's death.
    • At first, he is very angry. He stands up, pulls out his cross-guard lightsaber and is ready to go into rage mode like in TFA.
    • However, he stands there for a moment. His anger slowly turns into tears. He turns off his lightsaber, collapses on the floor and begins crying.
    • Rey finds herself in a room alone with Supreme Leader Snoke - in the flesh - who's ready to try and seduce Rey to the dark side. Credits roll.

It's highly doubtful to me that she would be killed by Kylo. He already killed his Father and it just seems like it's already been done. It just doesn't feel like that's the path they'll go down for TLJ. I'd say she'll probably die rather than get written off though, it would be the more logical option. But honestly, I'm prepared for anything and I'm sure they'll make the right choice with her exit from the series.

I'm fairly sure KK specifically said Carrie would not appear in IX. No mention of Leia as far as I'm aware. Can anyone provide proof otherwise?

And while many may say the two are synonymous I would have to disagree.
