Disney CEO Bob Iger said there'd be a trilogy after ep 9, but that they didnt have to be about the Original trilogy characters and such. meaning they may shy away from the Skywalker (etc.) family as a whole and introduce new characters

What are you talking about? Of course it's true! Every single source, including the president of Lucasfilm and the president of Disney, have said the Saga films are the story of the Skywalker family.

Rey may not be one, but that IS the focus of all the saga films.

This has been done ad nausea and proven over and over again - even just recently with the shareholders footage that Iger showed 2 weeks back - and I posted in this very thread - he said that these saga films are the story of the Skywalker family.

    You know this, right?

    TPM has no Skywalker protagonist.

Are you gonna pretend it's not a Star Wars movie ?

Iger has said that the episodes are about the Skywalkers and that the spin-offs (like Rogue One and Han Solo) are for otherwise experiments, non-Skywalkers and new main characters. As has Kennedy and Horn.

Perhaps you're confusing Bob Iger with Gary Whitta.

Because he is 6 in the film. You can't argue that the whole point of the film is to discover him, and train him as a Jedi. So while he may not be the main protagonist, the main protagonist, QGJ and Obi wan where there so serve the start of the Skywalker story, and the following 6 films.

i think he's saying that the story is still about Anakin/Skywalkers because Anakin is the sort of maguffin in TPM, despite not being the protagonist.

i think that if they do another saga trilogy then we will need some way to connect it to Anakin/Vader somehow, because that is the whole point of the saga films. if Rey isn't a Skywalker by blood, or becomes one by name, they may still figure out a way to connect future stories to Anakin without the presence of a Skywalker. not sure how they'd pull that off, though!

I destroyed this several pages back -

    TPM argument doesn't hold up.

Literally, the first image seen of TPM:

    is Anakin/Vader.

The first dialogue heard in the first trailer?

"You refer to the prophecy of the one who will bring balance to the Force...you believe it's this boy?"

(followed by - "Anakin Skywalker, meet Obi-wan Kenobi.")

It is a very, very thin argument indeed to use Anakin's screen time in TPM to somehow say that the Saga films are NOT about the Skywalker family.

Even if you were correct (and you are not) - the other 7 films DO focus on the Skywalker family.

And then the president of Lucasfilm and the president of Disney have BOTH said that the NEW SAGA films are "the story of the Skywalker family."

Now again - that doesn't in and of itself prove who Rey is.

But nobody can argue at this point that the saga films are not about the Skywalkers. This case is pretty well closed.

Idk, I think that would be obvious compared to the direction JJ Abrams was going in.

definitely, i'm with you man. i'm just saying, every saga movie revolves around a Skywalker, including TPM.

with that having been said, i do not think that Anakin was the protagonist of TPM. yes, they find him and explain the chosen one prophecy and everything, but QGJ, Obi, and Padme were much closer to protagonists than Anakin was. the story is about the Trade Federation and Naboo and setting the scene for the rest of the PT; they just so happen to bump into Anakin. TPM serves as an introduction and explanation as to where the chosen one came from and how they fit into the galaxy at the time.

EDIT: i believe that the saga Star Wars films are about the Skywalkers, as all of the powers that be have said time and time again. however, i disagree with the assertion that a Skywalker must be the protagonist to fit this criteria. TPM is an example of a saga film with protagonists that aren't Skywalkers. TFA and the ST may very well be the next saga films to have protagonists that aren't Skywalkers; who knows, though!

It's funny because the woman who owned first the name Skywalker wasn't force sensitive at all.

Well Kathleen Kennedy/Bob Iger already said so so, in my opinion, there is a pretty high chance of Rey being a skywalker as a result as she is being set up as the main protagonist so far
    .
    --- Double Post Merged, Apr 1, 2017 ---
Anakin skywalker was in it and it was about the introduction to the skywalker name...that's not what has happened since TPM..
    --- Double Post Merged, Apr 1, 2017 ---
That's because Anakin was the chosen one and was born directly from the force so Shmi was pretty much just a vessel for the force sort of like with Jesus

the last time I watched TFA, something struck me... it doesnt matter who Rey's parents are.
sure, it's a nice mystery and fun to ponder, but I think what matters is that she is the vessel of the Will of the Living Force, or at least the lightside of the living Force. quite possible that Snoke is grooming Kylo to be the vessel for the Dark side of the Living Force. Something about all the comments being made by those in the know at Lucasfilm about the way the Force is explained in The Clone Wars and Rebels being important just makes me feel that Rey/Kylo are like the Daughter/Son on Mortis but being played out on the Galactic scale. maybe I've been hitting the Death Sticks too hard, but that's just what I've been feeling lately.

There being more Star Wars films after IX does not mean they'll be about the Skywalker family. My view for a long time is that this trilogy will wrap up the Skywalker story so that they can create a new set of saga films with a completely new thread of characters.

If you make another trilogy about the Skywalker family but it's not about Vader's legacy or their supreme power then it may as well be about someone new anyway. That's what the Skywalker story is all about. And if it continues in that way it's going to get as dull as fudge.

I can't see why people don't want a satisfactory ending for this family saga. They seemed fine when RotJ appeared to give us exactly that.

For me Rey is the means of achieving this. She is the outsider who will help tie up the end of the Skywalker saga but then be able to take the story of the Jedi beyond this saga. Then when the next trilogy comes she can be involved (without it being Skywalker based) or we can jump 100 yrs into the future and have utterly new characters. But if fertile Skywalker's survive we'll forever be waiting for the next Skywalker to emerge and either destroy the galaxy or save the day. And their entire story will be weighed down by Vader's legacy and the off the chart power the family has. And if it's not, we'll why be so precious about the Skywalker name?

building off what you said, I'd love the next trilogy to be about the new group of Force users, new government factions, etc dealing with the fallout of knowing the Skywalkers exist. Imagine living in a Galaxy where these mythical heroes and villains have been the focal points of so many huge events in Galaxy history... What happens if the current trilogy has a down ending? Kylo successful, Luke dead, Rey turned and pregnant with the next in the Skywalker line as The First Order's banners are raised across the galaxy... Credits role.

Next trilogy opens, twenty years have passed since the ending of IX, let's say Finn is force sensitive, lives, tries to keep the Resistance and the Jedi alive, at this point Kylo calls himself Emperor, Rey his Empress. Their child is groomed to be successor. Force Ghosts visit him, he's on some training mission and gets abducted by Finn's Resistance. Ends up wanting to change, too much of his GRANDMOTHER in him...

OR, next trilogy opens, 50-100 years have passed, there's a new Empire set in place by The First Order. Emperor Skywalker the IX reigns. The galaxy must contend with this, the darkest and most powerful threat the galaxy has ever known...

haha okay I'm going to bed, I know I kinda delved into fanfic territory there

I think this is a great summarization the "rift" on this thread. There are those like @DarthPilkington ( I include myself in that group) who don't think the main protagonist needs to be a Skywalker for the ST to be about the Skywalkers. There are others who feel this must be the case. I don't think either side will be swayed at this point. it can't really be argued that typically a Skywalker has been the main protagonist. However you can't argue that TPTB can't or won't go in a different direction with Rey because it is entirely possible. While some might not be happy with that, the Skywalker presence will still be great in this trilogy and Kennedy and Iger would still technically be correct and saying the Saga's are about the Skywalkers even if some don't agree with it.

This whole protagonists = Skywalker thing is clearly on shaky ground just based on that one tweet by a member of the story group. Jedihopper, to claim you "destroyed this" is hyperbole. Let's quit acting like it's some kind of smoking gun. It's not. It's simply a guess. Would Lucasfilm make a new trilogy centered on a female Jedi that isn't a Skywalker? Some say yes or some say no, but there's nothing more than conjecture to answer that question.

I don't really care who Rey's parents turn out to be as long as it's good for the story. I liked the idea of Rey Skywalker after TFA, but everything I've learned since watching the movie complicates that possibility. The biggest challenge for the filmmakers going forward isn't Rey's parents, but explaining the history of Kylo Ren. The fall of Ben Solo has to be explained in a logical manner otherwise Kylo Ren as a character doesn't make sense. Anakin was manipulated for decades before he became Vader. What's Kylo's story? Kylo is as much a fallen Skywalker as Anakin. Look what it's done to the Skywalker family. Leia was estranged from her husband. Her brother the last Jedi is nowhere to be found. There's a ton of Skywalker drama already established regardless of Rey's origin.

Since we don't have any real evidence to speak of I keep looking towards the people who have been right in the past. The MakingStarWars guys have been sitting on information for a year as to not expose sources and they're leaning again Rey being a Skywalker. For my money that's the best we've got on the topic. If they come out tomorrow and say they've learned the opposite then I'd be inclined to believe what they say.
