We also know that Lucas had't flushed out the history of the Jedi Order very much so what we see in the OT doesn't tell us much.

Exactly my point. Coming to a conclusion that Luke was taught and/or believed that he should never marry or have children requires retconning the OT based on the what happened in the PT. It's impossible to make the case that Yoda or Ben taught Luke anything of the sort, because Lucas hasn't even decided that it was part of the Jedi code yet.

Whether or not Luke supports the idea is still completely open. There's a plausible explanation to back up either choice.

I'm too lazy to dig through this thread again, but it's canon that Luke has learned that Jedi don't marry/form attachments. It was retconned in either the comics or a book.

I'm sure that's true, but I don't think that changes the fact that you can't pull any "evidence" about this subject out of the OT.

And I'm guessing that wherever this retconning occurred, it didn't include any significant character development where Luke either resigned himself to a life without love, or vowed to follow his own path.

Given that the Jedi Code of the PT is canon, I think it's safe to assume Luke would learn about the non-attachment rule at some point. But unless they've specifically addressed Luke's choice to either follow or disregard the rule, there's still a plausible explanation for either.

In typing this post it occurred to me just how messed up it is that the Jedi recruit kids to become Jedi long before they're old enough to understand what they would be giving up. The drop out rate for Padawans when they hit puberty would be enormous.

Remember that the Jedi can still hook up, have sex, do whatever, but they can't form long term attachments, which is a part of the core of a Jedi' straining, to "let go" in a sense...Luke could have still had a kid without forming attachments which might explain he face he makes at Rey

Considering how many credits the Jedi seem to have, I wouldn't put it past them

I am, very, very slowly inching away from the idea that Rey is a Skywalker.

It's not because of the way in which the story is being told or new evidence being brought to light, but rather the fact that I'd much rather see Ben/Kylo be our overarching Skywalker from this trilogy to the next in the same way that Anakin was for the PT and OT, and in the same way that Luke likely will be for the OT and ST.

Not that I think he's turning, mind, but simply the fact that the most important character in storytelling is the most volatile to change and who has the most invested in the ongoing events of the story (for Ben, this is his belief that he is the rightful ruler of the galaxy, given his lineage). We saw this with both Anakin and Luke, and so, unless some massive bombshell is dropped in TLJ about Rey's past and lineage, I think it's more likely that Ben will be our overarching character, pushing away, for myself, the notion that Rey is a Skywalker.

I would have liked Ben to be brought back and be the Hero, along with Rey. However, after seeing TFA, affraid there no way back for that cat.. he's done to much now already, and it's only one film. Redeemed in the end, sure. But no way Disney, LFL, are making him a good guy after his murdering, straggling, father killing, torturing antics.

I don't doubt Leia for a second when she says there still light in him, but no way will he be a good guy now, only saved.

    Rey is our only hope!

It's hard to see him becoming the hero, for sure. Especially based upon the story that has been set up. Had Ren committed a terrible act at the start of TFA (killing Han and Leia) and then began to see the error of his ways more strongly by the end of that first film and then in the 2nd maybe have been stranded with Rey on some isolated planet together - we could've seen a clearer path to becoming a hero (sooner) as well as a more original plot than waiting until the last moment of the final film to be redeemed. But let's see how it plays out. For me though, regardless of who she is, Rey is the hero. No doubts there. To many that makes her the central character (because she is the one we go on the adventure with). However, I would say that this story is as much about her as it is Ren.

Is anyone arguing that Rey isn't the main character? The point of the debate is that the main character has to be a Skywalker because of the Skywalker saga.

Also... there has been some talk in the past that Making Star Wars was a one hit wonder with their leaks from TFA. That doesn't appear to be the case. They've been way ahead of everyone else on new content again. Lots of new stuff the past couple of weeks.

MSW has put out superficial information (costumes/x looks like and potential names) not the narrative. The kind of stuff that would turn up in marketing and merchandise between now and December.

I believe it was in the book 'Heir of the Jedi'. He learns about the rule then proceeds to get romantically involved with a girl.

And before that, they were hardcore Rey Solo. It was included with their scoops on Han dying, Luke has no dialogue, etc...

Then, 1-2 months before TFA release, they flipped and said she might not be related and the spoilers stopped. On the site and in their podcasts, it all became very surface level discussion.

And they started deleting comments asking about this.

The theory was (and mine still is) - Disney got to them. Told them to stop spoiling major elements and to obscure the Rey theory.

Now - if that's because she is Solo and they want it a big surprise, or they changed to Skywalker, or they scrapped it and changed to Random....who knows.

But if fits with some of the editing flaps (like Rey hugging Leia, being sent to Luke instead of his sister but we saw no dialogue as to why) that still make me think they changed something...

    It's all quite fascinating really.

What would be a bummer to me personally, was if it gets revealed later on that it started out Solo as lucas might've wanted (and Daisy alluded to in that Japanese tv show interview), and then it was made Random so they could "marvel-ize" the SW universe...

I don't think I would ever forgive them if that's what they did.

I still think she is, and they've went out of there way to make the audience think otherwise, until the reveal.

i had an idea last night, thought i'd share:

Kylo Ren says to Vader's helmet, "i'll finish what you started." this is a pretty ambiguous statement: what exactly did Vader start? how will Kylo Ren finish whatever it is Vader started?

what if Kylo Ren, during the course of his training with Luke, met someone and fell in love. what if that person was mortally injured, or became ill, or actually died? what if Kylo Ren is trying to finish what Vader started: to learn how to save the ones he loves from dying.

this would add an element of humanity to Kylo Ren's character, and could also be a way to continue the Skywalker bloodline without Rey being a Skywalker. Snoke could be telling Kylo Ren that he knows secrets that will help in his cause and poor Kylo Ren, in his desperation, falls for it, much like Anakin in RotS.

EDIT: if this were to happen, if Kylo Ren was able to saved his loved one (and perhaps his unborn or very young child), that would make him something of a tragic hero. i'm really just trying to find some ways to keep the story focused on Skywalkers with options to continue the bloodline should they decide to continue the Skywalker saga. Rey could then be this child's surrogate mother after defeating Kylo Ren, effectively becoming the next Obi-Wan looking after the next generation of Skywalker. anyway, just spit balling at this point!

Anything that brings Plagueis into the mix is fine by me! I have wondered if there was someone else in Ren's life though I think the most likely thing is that he was just a wayward kid with daddy issues.

meh, less emphasis on Plagueis, more on what Vader was about. i mean, was there any other reason for Vader to turn to the dark side other than to find a way to save Padme? i wonder what Vader's end game was once she was definitely dead. he obviously spent a lot of time meditating and learning, as evidenced by being a ghost after his death. maybe Kylo Ren feels like he has a better chance of succeeding this time around?

at any rate, i'm just trying to find ways to expand Kylo's story in a way that people can relate to, in a way that ties Vader's legacy in, and in a way that could potentially keep the Skywalker bloodline going with or without Rey being related.

I am sorry to interrupt you guys but please do me a favor.

Just put the sound of your computer to the max and just listen what it happens when Rey feels the Force ?

How could we have missed that for so long ?

And do the same for this one :

And I'm asking you a simple question.

Is there a Star Wars character who's breath was stolen ?

Is there a character in Star Wars who breathes every time he's on screen like Rey does on her journey ?
