I find it curious that Rey talks about "her family" but she never says if it's her "Parents" or just one parent or even if she had a sibling... I mean she's waiting how many years for people she barely describes?

What if she was always an Orphan and really had no family. Or maybe she's hiding something, or told not to reveal who they were.

I think it's an interesting point to discuss. If in the end it's "we don't know, she doesn't know, we'll never know..." It would be a bit annoying how vague they were in TFA and it'll a bit lame because the purposely kept it a mystery for no other point than to mess with the audience.

I honestly would not mind a Skywalker plot line. I wouldn't choose it but I wouldn't be against it either. At the end of the day, I want what every other fan wants- for these characters to really shine and for the movie to be well made and satisfying.

About the marketing thing, LucasFilm has never come out and said anything about Rey being a Skywalker. They've made insinuations that could be read in many different ways, sure.

The lightsaber coming to Rey is important when seen with context. The LS comes to Rey OVER Kylo Ren. I don't think it has to do with her heritage so much as it has to do with the fact that she's channelling the light side. The Force is on her side in this fight. Kylo is faltering and barely holding himself together while Rey is much calmer, less frazzled and much more in control of the Force.

My point is that every "clue" LucasFilm threw our way was very vague in nature and open to interpretation.

The second teaser of TFA is perhaps harder to explain but again, we don't know who Luke is talking to. There's no context to his speech.

"The Force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. My sister has it. You have that power, too".

Notice how he doesn't say OUR family. It's a direct line from ROTJ.
Again, it's very open to interpretation.

I'd also point you to the way TFA was marketed and more specifically, how Finn was marketed. Most people went into the movie thinking that Finn was going to be the Jedi- the posters showed him with the lightsaber, the trailer showed him fighting Kylo Ren.

LucasFilm is notorious for being shifty in their advertising. I personally wouldn't place too much importance on it.

That being said, I might be completely off but it's fun theorising all the same.

    Cheers, :)

    The thing may be...
What if they wanted us to ask ourselves the wrong question on purpose?
I mean... No parentage revel can compete with "I am your father".
    And they knew it.

Whoever Rey's parents are the answer may be less or more obvious.
    But not completely unexpected.

And we have 450 pages to prove it.

I think everything is still possible but my feeling is that the big revelation (and the right question/topic we're not debating) will be another one.

And it could be literally anything else, not even releted to the her lineage and/or parents.
    Not even related to her.

However, if the questions about her origins are something that's going to be addressed
as Jhonson and Daisy confirmed... there must be at least one character we saw in TFA
    who knows the truth.
Or I hope so... because otherwise everything must be explained through visions.
And I'm afraid it would be lame...

I know this isn't the right thread for this comment and me being such a vocal Kylo Ren supporter undercuts any credibility I have, but I think the big reveal will be about him. Either his past or his future. Rey's parentage is important but it is not the reveal.

Rian Johnson says as much. He stresses that it will be addressed and not clarified or revealed.

Either way, I'm so bloody excited for TLJ that it's not even funny.

"Unkar is the key to all this!"

It's either going to be him or Maz Kanata to dish out the expository reveal if it's supposed to be a character already featured in Episode VII (although I guess Luke might work as well, depending on which way they'll decide to take the whole parentage plot). Unkar must have known something, given the fact that he was the first thing Rey saw after her abandonment. Whether or not that something is important enough to merit his reappearance, we'll see - I am skeptical about it, but who knows? Wouldn't necessarily rule it out. However, I do have a pretty good feeling that we'll likely see a return to Jakku at some point during the trilogy.

One possibility is Rey doesn't know her real parents and the family she remembers simply adopted her.

Generally speaking, MagnarTheGreat comes out swinging anytime we start talking about how Rey Solo doesn't seem to work.

It does seem unlikely that Luke/Leia/Han would have left Rey with someone like Unkar. If it were Rey's parents they were under extreme distress.

Didn't Chewie rip his arm off in the deleted scenes? It was a glorious moment. Screw that gelatinous gloop of gelatin. He's the actual worst.

Yeesh. It was just a theory, too. Being weirdly offensive to some rando on the internet isn't going to convince Rian Johnson to change his movie (which has been scripted, filmed and almost edited) one way or another

well ....I don't see coming a moving scene with Unkar telling Rey "No, these are your parents!"

However guys, the true problem is in that galaxy far far away, they invented hyperdrive but not internet.
Let's Rey have a Facebook page "Who the f**** are my parents" and problem solved in 5 days.

Indeed, which is why I'm mostly skeptical about it. However, given the fact that the scene was ultimately removed from the final cut of the movie makes some part of me wish for his eventual comeuppance if Rey decides to start digging for the truth on her own. Would parallel the Watto scene from Clones, awkwardly enough.
That's what makes me wonder about Unkar's role in all this, though. Seems like a really poor, really desperate choice to leave your daughter to someone like that - yet they deliberately showed us exactly that during the flashback sequence.

Maybe they crash landed and needed a hyperdrive generator or some ship parts so they traded the kid. That's what he does isn't it, he trades stuff.

I agree to this point in particular, but I'm saying they don't need to enter the fray at all, no insinuations were necessary we were going to postulate that she was or wasn't anyway. By alluding to it, it feels like a cheap parlor trick if it turns out she's not. It (IMO) is completely unnecessary.

Another point that I think we ought to start pondering is just how much Light Side is Rey channeling? There was an awful lot of fear (at first) and then passion and anger when Rey fought Kylo... those are not traditional Light Side attributes. Are we entirely sure that LS came to her because she was channeling Light Side or channeling "balance"? Maybe that explains why she is able to do things that other eventual Jedis weren't capable of doing initially, because they were trained strictly in Light Side Force Maintenance and she's accessing everything all at once.

Back to the Skywalker lineage speculation. I brought up the 2nd TFA only to point out that there was no need to invoke his family ties to the Force, and speculate that perhaps it had significance that they chose to frame it that way. It is true we don't know who he is talking to, but it's a strange frame of reference to use (IMO).

As for Finn, he didn't look like he would be anything but a defecting storm trooper until the official trailer came out along with the poster (and even though we had to wonder how it would all work since we fully anticipated that Rey would be a Jedi as well, how would they have time to fill it all in). There wasn't as nearly as heavy an allusion to Finn's FS as there is to Rey's lineage. And I still believe Finn will be a Force User, so if it turns out he is in Episode 8 and they don't fully answer the question of Rey's lineage, I will believe even more strongly she is a Skywalker. Again, her character doesn't require a Skywalker lineage for significance, so if I'm wrong, I'm fine with it, but I think right now odds are in favor. I see more pointing towards it than against.
    --- Double Post Merged, May 1, 2017, Original Post Date: May 1, 2017 ---
This is the one piece of metadata that I think points towards a different lineage for Rey than Skywalker origins. They didn't say it would be resolved, just addressed. A proclamation that Luke was her father resolves the issue, it puts it to rest. If it is merely addressed it would lead me to speculate that the address that we get is that Luke is NOT her father... so we get SOME answers but the issue isn't resolved. Still the allusions (IMO) are more deliberate and overt so for right now I assume she is going to be a Skywalker even though the success of the ST really doesn't depend on it and in many ways could be a breath of fresh air if she's not.

There is a simple option. Rey was after Ben fell to the dark side. Leia hid her with an unknown 3rd party for her protection. Something bad happened she was assumed dead and was turned over to Plutt. Kylo seems to be able to read minds, perhaps people are keeping things very secret to avoid exploitation.

I don't think Rey Solo is likely but I think words like only are limits to imagination.

The only problem is that Ben made his turn during the six years preceeding TFA. We know that from Bloodline, as it is mentioned in this book that Ben travelled with Luke at that time. Rey was left on Jakku when she was five, fourteen years before TFA. These events cannot happen one after another, unless time travel is involved.

Bloodline is silent as to the issue of whether or not Leia had more than one child and the author wasn't told anyway. Most women that have children in our world have more than 1. The Scholastic Leia biography book says:

The biography only sticks to what is outright stated in TFA and the rest of the other canon like Princess Leia Marvel comics and Bloodline. It talks about when Ben was born and how Ben destroyed the Jedi Order and other things that are already public and known, but obviously the paragraph above hints or is suggestive there's more to come. It invites speculation about what we do not know about Leia yet. (That more to come I believe to be about the daughter of Leia and sister of Ben.) The Darth Vader biography book has the Sith code that's now showing up in other media like the Guardian of the Whills novel. There's no paragraph like the above in it either.

She was already worried about Ben when he was sent to train with Luke. Perhaps she sent Rey into hiding at the same time.

"She assumed her daughter was dead".
I don't buy that. It wouldn't be enough for any mother to just assume your daughter is dead. You'd seek forever to find the truth.
What's more though - this is Leia. She senses this kind of thing. She said she'd sense if Luke were alive or dead. She certainly knew he were alive in ROTJ.
And so, she wouldn't have sensed her daughters death (obviously) thus wouldn't just assume it. No way.

Who ever left her stole the child from Lor San Tekka and traded her to Unkar for that ship they are seen leaving on. Luke gave Tekka his daughter and his map to take care of. He failed sort of.

I agree with you to point. I am simply suggesting reasons not to deal in absolutes as to the story that has yet to be told. 10k Jedi were dooped into the clone wars. One mom can't be tricked?
