Yet, Anakin was not related to anyone. (I’m dutifully ignoring the immaculate birth here because If that is not a plot hole then what is not?) Kenobi came from a family of nobodies - yet, he bested Anakin (who was supposed to be the strongest force user). And so on...

I think people get too wound up with this whole sacred Skywalker bloodline storyline. Yes, the force is strong with the Skywalkers - but why should we assume it cannot be equally strong with someone else?

Rey being random but imbued with a strong connection to the Force to counter the rising dark side in Ren, makes a heck of a lot more sense than Anakin space Jesus.

I’ve given up on spoiler tags. If people are stupid enough to have not watched the film and logged on here then it is their problem! ;)

I have a similar post in the "Rey Solo" thread but I think a big part of the issue for me is that we've always been told that the episodic films is the story of the Skywalker family. I know Kylo is a part of that family and is crucial to the ST but really this is more of Rey's story than it is his (at least in my interpretation). In order to maintain the episodic tale being strictly the Skywalker story, the episodic tale should have remained as Ep. 1-6 and then this great story that we are getting now in the ST should have been presented as a spinoff trilogy (similar to what Rian Johnson is about to do; an epilogue if you will).

Not sure if this is the best example but I feel like Ep.1-6 is like The Lord of the Rings/Harry Potter and Ep.7-9 is like The Hobbit/The Cursed Child. While these are connected stories set in the same world utilizing some of the same characters, they are still separate stories.

Kylo Ren is Vader’s grandson. Everything that is taking place now comes back to the Skywalker family.

Dang, comparing the new trilogy to the Hobbit is kinda harsh haha.
To me its equally Reys as it is Kylo's story. Really can't pick between which is more of a main character looking at both TFA and TLJ.

But i feel like the continuation of the OT is something that needed to happen. For one, i was pretty interested in seeing how everyone was doing + its a major draw for new/old fans of Starwars to revive the movie franchise. It seems as though Rey is just a nobody, but they still do have Kylo Ren. So it feels to me as though they straying away from the Skywalker Saga slowly, which i feel is the best move.

We've talked about this issue now for a couple of years, but I still don't understand this line of thinking. This film's heart is the Skywalkers with or without Rey. People carried this "every strong force user" is a Skywalker relation into the story. Force users come from every walk of life.

I think we have the definitive answer here. No Luke is not Rey's father. The End.

I don't know who Rey is, but if she is indeed noone then has Rian Johnson EVER watched The Force Awakens?

How can her parents be drunks who sold her for booze, when they leave her to Unkar Plutt (he is not a kantina owner or smth like that) and leave the planet in a shuttle? How much money did they get to be able to leave in a shuttle and where would the drunks go after all?

It would be more believable if she was actually sold to Plutt, but TFA never portrayed Rey as his slave, so Plutt really didn't get anything out of that.

Being a Skywalker is out of the question now and I don't believe that there will be a force ghost Luke telling Rey that she is his daughter. I always thought that she was another powerfull student of Luke and that he took her to Jakku to protect her from Ren and Snoke (like Obi Wan did with him and Leia).

He didn't recognize anything about her in the movie so it is a missed opportunity...

    ^

I'm not sold on Rey's parents explanation from Kylo Ren,he has an agenda to get Rey to "let the past die" and what better way than to let her think as he suggests.

It's not certain just cause Rey was crying etc that she KNOWS he's right.

If Rey's parents are truly no-one and so random then why is it that a direct showing of this is not done?

Leaves enough room for me to doubt it and JJ is back for the next movie so whatever Rian wanted to do JJ can undo.

How much more direct do you want? Should there be a scene for DNA testing?

A guy who has an agenda to tell Rey a story that suits letting her let the past die is not sufficient.he has good reason to lie.

Rey said it herself. Snoke explained her power. Ren fleshed our her story. Neither Luke nor Leia knew who she was or ever talked about their lost child. ReyLo has been confirmed as a thing. At this point, if you don’t accept the truth, not even a DNA test would convince you.

    The truth?

From a certain point of view. :p

By the way, I'm not posting as I have for being a proponent of Rey being a Skywalker and ReyLo does not bother me one bit.

Most of you aren't using spoiler tags, but just to be on the safe side, I put one around this. If you've seen The Last Jedi, though, you're fine to read this.

After the first screening, I was infuriated that they built up Rey's parentage throughout The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi to be such an anticlimactic reveal, but after the second screening, I'm more okay with it if what Kylo Ren tells us is true. We basically have two options.

First, assuming he is telling the truth, this ultimately leaves him as the only living Skywalker in Episode IX, assuming that Leia will be dead in the film. If he dies, the legacy of Luke, Leia, and Han lives on through Rey, who is also able to end the Skywalker family story. There will be no need to continue past Episode IX, and Rey can kind of bring closure to that story and allow Lucasfilm to move on and focus on different things. We can have a satisfying ending with a protagonist without leaving room for more stories (which, I think is necessary because if they let the Skywalker saga continue on for forever, it will become too much and end up ruined at some point).

However, if Kylo Ren is lying, we could have it revealed to us that Rey is a Solo, thus creating some sort of reveal (most people aren't expecting anything more with her parentage after that, so revealing that to be a lie in Episode IX would be shocking) and creating an emotional tie between her and the big three from the Original Trilogy. I believe this may be possible because Snoke says he's responsible for causing the connection between Rey and Ben, but even after he's gone, they still have a connection at the end of the film (one of these connections in particular directly follows one between Luke and Leia). Additionally, when Rey is in the cave by herself, she says something along the lines of, "Show me my parents." I really think the evidence is there to support that she knew all along and was hiding the truth from herself, but I could see them twisting that into something more crowd-pleasing (and with JJ responsible for Episode IX, I could easily see him doing that to avoid some of the backlash this film is getting for being different and risky).

I would gag at this point. It adds zero to the story. It goes against the theme of The Last Jedi. JJ took a beating for playing it safe in TFA and he decides to make Rey a Solo for no good reason? I realize some people are desperate for her to be related, but JJ already has his story. I doesn't seem logical to change the story of TLJ.

As someone who really wanted her to be related, I agree that it adds little to the story after The Last Jedi, unless her being the sister Ben didn't know he had somehow ties into how he is redeemed (if he is). Considering Leia and Ben appeared to have a Force connection that prevented him from killing his own mother, I believe that Leia may have been the only one who could've redeemed him before Episode IX. Now with Carrie gone, going with "Kylo lied, Rey is his sister" could potentially resolve that. It would also explain the cryptic bond Rey and Leia seem to share (random hugs, Leia giving Rey a tracking device to "find her way home," etc.) because both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi imply their relationship is important while also ignoring it for the majority of their runtime.

Really, the only reason why I think there's a chance Rey and Ben could be related is (previous paragraph aside) because it makes no sense why they still share the same connection that Luke and Leia shared. Even though Snoke took credit for the connection, they continued to have it without him.

I also think it's worth noting that Rian acknowledged JJ may change the outcome of the parentage revelation with Episode IX: “I can’t speak to what they’re going to do. And there’s always, in these movies, a question of ‘a certain point of view.’ But for me, in that moment, Kylo believes it’s the truth. I don’t think he’s purely playing chess. I think that’s what he saw when they touched fingers and that’s what he believes. And when he tells her that in that moment, she believes it.”

I'm not saying that is the route they'll go. As I said above, not making Rey a Skywalker would allow the Skywalker Saga to end with the death of Ben in Episode IX, thus allowing them to focus on things outside of this story. However, considering this appears to be one of audiences' issues with The Last Jedi, and the fact that Rian and JJ apparently never discussed Rey's parentage together, it's very possible that JJ will undo the parentage reveal from this film.

That being said, I really wish they would've had some sort of idea of what they were doing with these films beforehand. The stories should've been laid out beforehand, but each one has basically been its own thing and now I feel like it's inevitably going to create a lot of inconsistencies. I'm not saying they should reverse this reveal and just make her a Solo to please the crowd, but I think they may see that as an easy way of regaining audience support with Episode IX because people were clearly pissed off about how this film went, if you look at the Rotten Tomatoes score. I loved it, but they're not going to want to create another polarizing film like that, and resolving issues like this would fix that issue as far as Disney's concerned.
