Jar Jar Binks- Why is he so hated?

In defence of Jar Jar Binks



Jar Jar Binks is truly so much more than just a goofy, accident prone Gungan.

The comical value of Jar Jar Binks, quite obviously directed towards the youngest possible SW audience, was but just a tiny part of a very distinct and influential character. It disappoints me how so many people can not see past the slapstick.



Qui-gon sensed something about Jar Jar when Obi-Wan thought he was just another "pathetic life-form".



Jar Jar was well respected and trusted by many of our favourite characters.



He was heavily involved in all the Republic political affairs working alongside the likes of Bail Organa and Padme.



I particularly loved this moment when Jar Jar became Representative Binks.



We all know how pivotal this moment is. The moment Jar Jar essentially helped create the monstrous Empire.

It was a real person playing Jar Jar the whole time. An actor who felt the backlash. Read this article, your opinion on Jar Jar might change. I actually think Jar Jar's voice is great. If you find it annoying it's highly likely you are just looking for an excuse to be angry about something.



I was always fascinated by the underwater Gungan city, Otoh Gunga. I think the whole design of the Gungan race is awesome and I don't think they could have done a better job. As natives of Naboo I think it was all perfectly believable.

Note: When the Gungans put their differences aside, reunite with Naboo to fight against the trade federation invasion, we learn a powerful lesson.

For those who didn't know, Jar Jar is actually still alive. Read about it here. It's actually pretty cool to know what he is up to and it's canon. He is still entertaining kids while the adults try to ignore him.

I would like to finish by asking all those who "hate" Jar Jar Binks, why does such a harmless, simply lovable character annoy you so much? Maybe you need to ask yourself why something so small makes you so angry.

 

Jar-Jar is the only redeeming quality with the PT, in my humble opinion.

 

There are so many things wrong with that Character that I could write a dissertation on that subject. Jar Jar and Ewoks, the only two failures of Star Wars.

 

What is the big deal about Jar Jar? I've asked this question so many times. And instead of answering, people either make jokes about Jar Jar or just repeat how he was such a terrible character. This is guy who was basically clumsy and naive. Nor is Jar Jar the first "non cool" character to appear in the STAR WARS saga. Or is he? Jar Jar is not worth this level of hatred. And yet, so many fans hate him with a burning intensity that makes no damn sense. Why?

As much as the Ewoks had annoyed me, I never hated them. Not like this.

 

Never had a problem with him. Honestly? I even found him a little funny during that final fight in TPM - maybe because that's exactly how I would react in that situation. Then I discovered the internet.

He's there to make the kids laugh, like C3PO from the OT and other bumbling sidekicks in films. That's good enough for me.

 

I never liked him because I found him disruptive to the story. It was hard to take TPM seriously because I feel like Jar Jar had a few too many scenes focused on him. I think he took much tension out of crucial parts too. Quite annoying knowing he was created purely for the sake of entertaining children and not really moving the story forward.

 

At least Jar Jar got a closure to his story in Empire's End.

 

Yep the theories of what happened to him since ROTS was getting boring.

Hating Jar Jar is easy, the reason for it simple

His antics serve mostly to either water down a tense sequence or to misdirect attention away from plot-holes by taking center stage with "nothing".
I find him compelling to a certain extent, as a supporting character he is not far removed from the droids, he has a place in the story, for sure.

The hatred spawns from the same place as our general distaste for anything "silly" when it's uncalled for,
we feel like he's making light of things that we take seriously, like the fate of the galaxy and stuff and junk.
For him to bumble on for minutes, only to put the story on hold, feels out of place and forced.

He mostly serves to get farted at and this is not story, this is comic relief, without relief or comedy.
I could go on but I'd rather forget the Gungan city and the detour ol' J-J took us on . .

 

I cant remember if its Life Debt or Empires End (I read them back to back) but the only Jar Jar story I've ever liked, even warmly liked in a way that even made me tear up a little was the interlude where Jar Jar and the scarred orphan make friends. It was heartwarming and really sweet. Jar Jar would have been fine in the movies had he a role that more involved children and his innocent playfulness. Instead, Lucas wanted him to be a Sith Lord (just rumor there) and after the back lash of the first movie, he was relegated to minor participation with major consequences. His story should have been with the children in the Star Wars universe, not in the Reps seat calling for the damn Empire. That's why I cant stand him in the movies.

 

Because he is evil and most powerful

 

I think a lot of SW fans hate Jar Jar, because they fear what he might really represent . . . an expression of their true selves - clumsy and naive.

 

I think it's because of his weird way of speaking, how he rose to be a gungan general then senator, he rose to quickly.

 

Agreed, all though with Palpy at the helm, I'd imagine Jar Jar to be the perfect puppet for a influential supreme-chancellor, so his rise to power is not far fetched, even if a bit placed.

 

I don't hate jar jar, but found him in the way of scenes and unnecessary for humor intentions. He should've been more like he was in ROTS but with scattered humor.
