Seen Moana (2016) with my nephews today. I expected a feminist tale about rebelling against abusive patriarchy. But it's really only there if the kids are taught to see the movie that way (and neither I, nor anybody I personally know would do that). So, I liked it overall. It's beautiful, creative, based on new culture and mythology and overall a typical good Disney movie.

    Creature From the Black Lagoon

Starting October off with one of my absolute favorite films and favorite monster flick. Doesn't get the recognition it deserves IMO.

It's like The Omen only a comedy. It wasn't bad, started off pretty good and had some really funny moments but got kind of predictable and cheesy near the end.

Remember watching that when it came out.
Netflix films really do seem to struggle hitting all 3 acts.

Yeah, it almost felt like they brought in a different writer/director for the 3rd act on this one. I don't recall any other Netflix films I've seen, I guess I've mainly seen their series but it sometimes holds true as well. American Vandal for instance, it was basically the world's longest d!@k joke but for the finale they tried to get all serious and dramatic. Luckily by that point I was too bored by it to care what they did.

More Htchcock! This time it was Shirley MacLaine's on-screen debut in The Trouble with Harry, a comedy that requires a lot of setup, but pays all of it really beautifully. It is very reminescent of Twin Peaks in how it handles the denizens of the vllage it's set in. Also - great colours. It's set in autumn and it was shot on Technicolor film, so the colours just pop from the screen. I just like Hitchcok.

Most recently I watched Hold The Dark. I loved and I mean LOVED the first 2 acts of this.
By the last 20 minutes I could more or less guess the outcome and it faded fast. It's still great and worth watching IMO but it isn't as complete as Green Room.

Okja is by far the most "complete" Netflix film. Beasts Of No Nation. The Babysitter. All good too.

The Resistance is coming out soon, so I'll just make this a cartoon week. Today I've decided to wrap up the Shrek series with Shrek Forever After (2010). Shrek 1 was good, Shrek 2 was great, Shrek 3 was garbage and Shrek 4... is a good epilogue for Shrek's story.
I've enjoyed most of the series, but I feel it's too "adult" for kids, in terms of both themes and presentation.
Next time it's going to be a Norwegian cartoon Angelman suggested.

A nice Korean horror/thriller movie. This movie was beautifully shot, the story was interesting and intense from time to time and it was suprisingly brutal. The movie was a little bit too long though, at least for my taste.

So, "Venom..." I've REALLY enjoyed it, but for all the wrong reasons. Instead of an action film with elements of horror I saw an endearing comedy about a friendship (but not only...) between an alien and a human. The plot and action are absolutely awful. Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed completely wasted. The best part of it? The preview of the animated "Spiderman" film. The comic-book aesthetic and a lower(?) framerate needs a bit of time to get used to, but when you do, you get a pretty great animated film. The action in that clip eclipses the goo-on-goo blur from "Venom." It was so clear. You were able to figure out what was happening!

Oh, one more thing! They tease Carnage! And you know who's playing him? Woody Harrelson in a red clown wig. And there is one wink to the audience regarding the name "Carnage" that is as on-the-nose as that Solo scene when han gets his surname. They really think they can turn it into a franchise, don't they?

    The Incredibles 2

Not as good as the first one, but still a lot of fun! I love the music of these movies.

Just watched "The Natural" again....LOVE this movie, in my Top 5 sports movies of all time. Plus what a great score by Randy Newman. Cinematography, framing scenes and use of lighting was awesome. The shot of Redford as the young Roy Hobbs, waiting to pitch to "The Whammer", with the sun just off his shoulder, is incredible. Great, great movie, highly recommended if you haven't seen it. It helps to be a baseball fanatic!!!

Pete's Dragon(2016) - finally got around to seeing this one. I seen the original when I was a kid and vaguely remember it, but what I do remember is it was a musical and I liked it. I'd say I probably wouldn't now. But enough of that one.

This remake is a little better and maybe even more heart. And Bryce Dallas Howard is hot. That's about all I have to say.

Last night went to see Venom and it was just okay, really. Feels like they rushed this movie into existence and it shows. It's for sure weak, imo.

I saw this movie some months ago after watching The Shape of Water. The creatures are very similar (I think Del Toro made his creature as a homage to the creature from the black lagoon).
Well...I enjoyed much more the classic from the 50's than Del Toro film.
