No, I'm totally enjoying the spitballing. You'll have to excuse my ignorance on the mechanism for deployment, but could the drop pads be operated if the AT-AT just fell out while the SD was heading down? I assume someone would have to purposefully try to deploy the drop pads, which might very well be a good survival response if your SD is going to crash, but wouldn't it require a little forethought? Is that likely in that kind of emergency situation? And, where did the drop pad end up?

Well they are quickly deployable and battle-ready in a Titan.
normal Star destroyers have 12 of those.

MvS is Lobot who is also General Veers. BAM!
    Whaaaaaaaaat?
He picked up the lightsaber on Bespin, then on his way to deliver it, had to assemble his ground troops for the Jakku situation. He lives in his second downed AT - AT.

Thanks for posting this. The Wookiiepedia entry on this suggests that these were only deployed by Super Star Destroyers (albeit the EU information suggests regular Imperial SD had 12 of them)... and the one SSD we see is upside down. I think they would have had to deploy this thing before the SSD flipped. In either event (SD or SSD), I wonder what happened to the Y-85 Titan dropship?

Although this discussion originally centered around the rumor about MVS being the commander of a downed Star Destroyer, perhaps it is better suited for the Battle of Jakku thread? If so, if any of the mods want to move it...

Yeah good question I think its safe to say those SD SSD didn´t blow up just crashlanded like the scene in RotS maybe. So unless you are in an esacpe pod I would asume that those ships or other in the hanger are the next best alternative. In the event where everything goes down, the Titan would be my favorite to be in,a bunker like ship inside another ship.

Echo Base took two years to complete and the Battle of Hoth was 3 years after ANH.

True. And then you have Skywalker > Windu, of course.

Early rumors of MvS's character said when they revealed his name it would blow people's minds. That hardcore fans would immediately know who he was and his history, but the casual fan may not know. I'm a hardcore fan and I'd be hard pressed to think of an Imperial commander that would "blow my mind." UNLESS this Imp commander used to be a republic hero like Wedge Antilles (Although the age might be off). Seeing a former good guy go Imp might shock me. But I'm more of the mind that MvS is playing someone else. Not Fett either (wrong skin color) but maybe someone from the novels or animated series

I believe those early rumors you're referring to originated with Spoilerman, who is not considered a credible source. If Harry Knowles is to be believed, Max von Sydow will most likely be a character mainstream audiences will be reasonably familiar with. All this business of Sydow being the weird bald guy from Cloud City or some random AT-AT pilot no one cares about makes absolutely no sense to me.

Of all the characters which people have so far suggested Max von Sydow could be playing, only two seem even remotely plausible to me:

    1) Boba Fett - He's a perennial fan favorite and appears in both the prequels and the original movies. However, the big problem with him is that people are going to wonder why Fett as an elderly man looks nothing like Temuera Morrison. On the other hand, we have to remember that we're dealing with the same director who thought it was a good idea to have Benedict Cumberbatch play an Indian guy.

    2) Kanan Jarrus - First of all, Kanan doesn't currently have a live-action incarnation, so his physical appearance is a little more open to interpretation. Having Sydow be an elderly Kanan would help to strengthen the canonicity of Rebels and get a wider audience interested in the show. Disney seems very intent on making all their Star Wars properties connect together. For example, they've said that clues about The Force Awakens will be contained in the new novels. You will also be able to play through the "Battle of Jakku" in the upcoming game in the Battlefront franchise. I find it unlikely that they're not trying to do something similar with Rebels. They're going to want the movie to serve as an entrée to as many things as possible so that they can make as much money off of you as possible. What I say is maybe a little cynical, but it's true. So for these reasons, I would judge a Kanan reveal to be highly probable.

That is a valid point. In the end we know Disney will milk something until it gets every last cent out of it. I am just hoping they don't make a bunch of straight to dvd 'canon.' Im not so sure about kanan though. When they first started rebels, the director said something along the lines of "we all know what's going to happen to the group in the end, it's more about the journey of how they get there." This makes me think Vader is going to end up killing Kanan. And I may be a little short sighted but it will be hard to explain what a Padawan (who might finish his training under Ashoka Tano) was doing out of the spotlight during the OT, and make it sound credible.

I really hope it's not Lobot, and I think they are gonna safe Boba for an anthology movie. But like you said, BC played an Indian man.

And if his identity is supposedly well known many fans, but still a surprise, it's going to be hard to figure out

God I hope not. That would be a slap in the face to Billy Dee Williams. Especially since he's voicing Lando in Rebels

I could see Sydow being Veers, since Rey lives in an AT-AT.

I really hope they didn't cast someone of the caliber of MvS just for him to play a very minor and insignificant role. I would be disappointed to say the least.

    Just dug this up: http://www.theverge.com/2014/5/12/5711780/star-wars-episode-7-wont-feature-wedge-antilles-actor

So there was what appears to be a minor role in TFA for Wedge but Lawson rejected it because the scope was too small. From what we understand of the Vicar, he's a rebel veteran that deals with antiquities, he would recognize Luke's/Anakin's lightsaber, and he dies at the hands of Kylo, probably early in the film. I'm putting my chips on Wedge over Boba Fett or Kanan

I don't think Max Von Sydow is this "Vicar" character. He wouldn't have been announced so early if his part was so minor.
