SPECULATION Lor San Tekka (Max Von Sydow's Character).

Most certainly he is playing a "bad guy." He has a lot of gravitas that would be wasted on a bureaucratic Rebel leader IMO.

 

Why wasn't he at the table read?

 

Probably because it is speculated that he may just be lending his voice to a CGI character or perhaps another person playing the body a la Vader.

 

My guess is he's playing the new emperor. Possibly not the evil mastermind version we got with Palpatine but the bureaucrat type Lucas originally had in mind... Maybe he's served as some kind of grand vizier or high official and took over when things got chaotic following Palpatines demise. This kind of character would be a nice contrast ans ilustrate how the empire had to evolve in order to preserve itself.
Maybe someone considerably more evil takes over during the events of episode VII...?

 

I am hoping that he voices the character Andy Serkis mo caps.

 

IMO...Sydow is 100% doing a Sith voice. If it's Serkis's mo cap character remains to be seen, but my speculation sense tells me no.

Serkis has been voicing all his talking mo cap characters and something tells me this won't be any different.

Sydow has a great commanding voice as evident with his work as Vigo the Carpathian. Don't think he's cast as a one time bad guy. Think he voices the Sith Lord pulling all the strings.

Andy Serkis said that his own role is just a cameo. That's what he's been saying, anyway.

Never mind then... Let Max von Snydow be Darth Ruin. I and my fellow comrades of the I.P.C will serve him to the end.... (maybe)

 

Max Von Sydow is 100% voicing the new, Sauron-esque villain. This villain does not show up until almost the end of the film, and we barely get a glimpse of him, setting the stage for Episode 8. Adam Driver is the main bad guy in Episode 7, along with Gwendolyn GOT as the Stormtrooper. Neither of them seem so bad once Sydow's voiced badass character shows up though.

 

Yeah, I tend to agree with this version. Based on the actor's facial type and his voice, an emperor or some kind of cult leader, shadowy figure seems very appropriate. I wouldn't use him in a militaristic role like a Moff etc.

 

I think he will play a Sith Lord Master and he will be killed by his Apprentice Darth Adam Driver.

Since Max Von Sydow is 85, it would be a risk to plan for him to be in Episodes 8 and 9.

 

I would love for Von Sydow to be the main bad guy, but NOT Sith - make him a bad-ass military genius, kind of like Thrawn, and let him be allied with Sith, or even better - a band of mercenaries or mandalorian-ish fighters.

I kind of agree with you there, Bantha. He'll be pushing 90 by the time they film Episode IX, and while I of course wish him nothing more than a long life in good health, casting him as the trilogy's overarching villain might be a bit too risky. While I do think that him playing an old Sith Master would be quite cool, I've got a feeling he'll be more of a bureaucrat, as suggested by Wayne Antilles, or possibly some sort of chancellor-Valorum-type character.

Personally I hope he is an aristocrat type of villain, cold and calculating and commandeering. Considering his age, he probably should have a rich backstory. Heck the guy could've been...a youngling..

 

I truly still hope that his role is Darth Plagueis... In my opinion it's the only logical choice for him, but this one can only dream...
