gotta be a possibility if he's not an out-n-out bad guy (although Jarrus could be bad at this point in time)

him as the lead in the recently announced comic adds a bit of weight here also.

    just a thought..
when we first see him in rebels his true identity is hidden - so he is clearly adept at disappearing.
he trains Ezra.. ezra bites the bullet and Kanan goes back into hiding feeling responsible.
lives to a ripe old age on a backwater planet and happens across our new hero/s.
reveals himself as a jedi to save them as he realises their importance?

maybe i've been reading too much speculation and rumour.. but it works for me lol. i'm trying to expect the reverse of what we originally thought when the cast was announced - so i have MVS as good, driver as good and maybe gleeson bad? i dunno anymore lol

    Only speculations ;)

MVS is playing an old and crippled space pirate. (Are U an angel?) He went in several adventures and is now old, weak and drunk. He is the one that provides a summary of everything that happened frm Episode I to VI to Kira, Boyega and the audience. He is the one telling kira all about the found lightsaber and to reach for Han Solo. He is the one pushing Kira to leave the planet and go on this adventure. One scene, important one, no more.

Based on recent descriptions of alleged concept art and other rumors, if any hold true, particularly the weathered old cyborg approach, then perhaps we might be seeing Max playing a character not unlike Terrinald Screed from the old Droids cartoon? See the fan made concept art for reference.

Notice the robotic hand and eye piece, both attributed to an alleged concept of Sydow's character. Also, Screed's past is similar, a veteran of the Clone Wars, battle hardened and scarred, he quickly rises up the ranks as one the Emperor's most loyal subjects. Experienced a loss of prestige and reputation later in life, which climaxed with the death of the Emperor at Endor. Perhaps Max Von Sydow's character has a similar background? A once-loyal veteran of the Empire, now scarred and wasting away on a backwater planet reminiscing of forgotten days of glory, he takes up a new identity to avoid trouble with the New Republic and possible Remant Imperial forces looking to tie up loose ends. Maybe Boyega's arrival signals a new opportunity for Sydow, or perhaps, a new danger...

I'm gonna go with what Badass Digest and Jason Ward reported on with the concept art. The old junker cyborg guy with dementia just feels right and more in tune with the gritty tone of the sequel trilogy.

IMO, the idea that Max is an Emperor or some voice to a Sith baddie is not that inspiring to me. I want to see him act!

Regardless of what character MVS plays I'm willing to bet that he'll be part of a huge twist or revelation at the end of EP7.

I speculate there is some type of relation to MVS and Gleeson. After all we have essentially heard no rumors about either's role in EP7. In fact I could see Gleeson and MVS as one in the same being that Gleeson (dark side force user) disguises himself as an old washed up war hero (MVS) from the Clone Wars in order to get inside information about the whereabouts of Luke and his Jedi counterparts. They possess the last Sith holocron needed to enable a secret weapon.

Look at this picture and tell me that Gleeson can't pull off an epic evil character?

When asked about his role Gleeson said that even the slightest hint would be massive spoiler. Hence we (or at least I) favor the Gleeson= Skywalker or maybe Solo. There is even a Gleeson= Kenobi contigent.

Well in case you haven't seen me say so, I believe Gleeson is Luke's son who has or will fall to the dark side.

The Driver is not the villain contingent has been picking up steam lately but I personally feel there are too many rumors and supposed leaks supporting Driver being the villain.

Hey Guys! This is my first post on these forums so bare with me!
So Max Von Sydow is a Hollywood Legend. He has Played Ming The Mercilus and also The Priest in "The Exorcist". Sydow is 85 years old.
Star Wars Rebels takes place 5 years before Episode IV. Kanan, The Star of SW Rebels, is 28 years old in the show, so that means at the end of the Original Trilogy he is 43 years old. The Force Awakens takes place 30 years after ROTJ, So Kanan would be Between 73 and 76 years of age.
So that brings me to my point, Do you think Sydow is playing Kanan in TFA?
I think it would be incredible! What do you guys think?

Welcome in the coolest Star Wars board Noah.

That's a possibility. My prediction is he will be playing Obi Wan Kenobi's Ghost in replacement of Sir Alec Guiness.

If Luke sees dead people, Obi Wan is certainly still around.

Hmmm, That would be cool, they would have to use a lot of CGI or makeup to really pull that off.

There was a trailer for something a while ago that showed R2 wheeling through a Disney studio. Anyone remember that?

Anyway, in the trailer R2 bumps into Obi-Wan and they talk but we never see Obi-Wan's face. I thought that was very odd. Of all the characters to also include in the add, they not only chose Obi-Wan but they chose 'Old Ben' rather than the younger Ewan. Since then, I've been convinced Obi-Wan will be back, rendered mainly in CG with a replacement voice actor (possibly even Ewan).

Soon as MvS was announced it all made sense. CG Obi-Wan, MvS voiced. I will be very surprised to learn otherwise and doubly so if MvS does turn out to be playing an elderly cyborg.

That said, a matured-up Kanan would be cool!

Welcome to the boards, Noah. ;)

    WELCOME!:)

I guess it comes down to a few things.

Firstly, while we now know that Rebels is canon, i don't think there will be heavy collaboration between the two. Like i mentioned in another post, things like the same R2 droid appearing in rebels and Ep.VII are probably more likely as that is not a huge thing to work around. An this kind of leads into my second point, Rebels is introducing Kanan and all of this background story via a TV show which is not going to be as watched as Ep. VII will be. The problem you run into there, how much of the Kanan's back story do you have to try and bring into Ep.VII for people who have no idea who Kanan is. If Kanan showed up he would not be some little character, so you would then have to catch up the vast majority of movie watchers as to his importance in the star wars universe, while retelling a story die-hard star wars fans already know about.

Its a great theory but i just wonder how committed the Ep. VII team would be in trying to inject Kanan into the movie world.

On your point of saying Kanan wouldn't be just a small character? What says he can't just be in for a small cameo? That means Sydow most likely wouldn't play him but rebels fans could have a little tie back to rebels.

Good point, i guess could be, but then as you say, if Sydow isn't playing him because its a cameo, then who is? Tricky question.

Also, i think a debate can be had as to Kanan's actual position within rebels. I haven't really kept up with the episodes but i know its been renewed for another season. Which brings up the question, does Kanan actually survive past the rebels show? If the TV creators want to kill him off towards the final few episodes of their show, that changes everything.

Having Kanan in Ep VII would confirm that he doesn't die during Rebels, which takes the tension out the show, too.

Max Von Sydow could possibly be made to look like Alec Guinness, but no way could he sound like him! The voices of those actors are at polar opposites.

Furthermore, I doubt that Max Von Sydow signed up for a movie that not only will mask his appearance, but also replace his voice with that of God-knows-who. What does an actor have left if you take away his physical appearance AND his voice?

Lastly, I doubt that Max Von Sydow would sign up for a part as limiting as a Force ghost. There isn't much emotion (acting) involved with being a Force ghost.
