I really think that he will be a very important character...maybe Boba Fett....or maybe he is going to look like a good guy and later has the really bad guy...the real Darth Plagueis.

I think he will just be some guy
We will have a cool scene with Rey (maybe Finn there too) and he will describe the OT era like Ben described the Old Republic, contribute a beat to push the plot forward then get struck down by Kylo

He will be awesome though. He always is :)

While I'd prefer it if he had a larger role, I think you're probably right.

Honestly though, I'm just glad he's in the movie. Such a great actor.

He should be the guy who tell Rey "the story about what happen to the dark side and a Jedi" .

His role is as secret as Lukes. What they hiding yo? Maybe role shrunk during production?

That appears to be what Han partially does and likely Maz as well

The general outline of the MSW rumors appear to be right. His role is not secret, it just is very small.
He is in possession of Luke's blue saber at the beginning of the movie and gets the movie started by passing it on to Poe before Kylo and the FO gets there. He is then struck down by Kylo
He is not being kept secret, there is just not any reason to market his role. While his role is important to the start of story, it is a small part and by the end his role is a factor any more.

It would surprise me if in the end everything about his role comes down to what MSW said and he has no connection to Rey, since it seems to me there ought to be someone on Jakku who influenced the kind of accent Rey has. She couldn't have gotten an RP accent from being around only Jakku scoundrels and ruffians. Sydow isn't a Brit of course but he's played them before.

I read that he's a familiar character from the OT but not very known. So based on your speculation
maybe he's Lobot and found the saber on Bespin

I have been trying to understand the flashback scene, because it is so convoluted. Anyway, it got me wondering part about some person named "Naka", who picks up the lightsaber... could he be Max von Sydow's character?

Or he is a known character and his name would be a major give away.
If he were Kanan Jarrus, as some speculated based on their similarity, or Lobot that would give big hints to different story parts.

Who ever he is I doubt he'll be one of the new characters from either the cartoons or the books. Not everyone is going to watch the cartoons or read the books. The movies are what most know. Besides how can he be Kanan when he is Wedge Antilles. Who else is Luke going to trust to watch over his daughter. That's right his old flying buddy. Lawson didn't sign on so his character gets a quick death. Who knows but soon we'll find out.

Hello and Welcome to the Cantina

So you think he is Wedge?

That would be interesting. And you are right about Kanan, although they are trying to tie everything recently into CANON.

No, I don't think he is wedge. But we just don't know. If he was Kanan there would have to be a good fight between him and Kylo and I don't think a quick death to Kanan would be right (if romurs are correct of a quick ending early on). Plus half of the audience wouldn't even know who he was. I think the book and cartoon characters will be used to setup family ties and back stories for the guys and gals in the new movie. +30yrs between the movie and the books/cartoon stories. The movie is going to be the flip side of the OT. Roles reversed orders set back to the beginning or zeroed. The Choose One = ice age, reboot button, a clean slate to start over. I'm a tad nervous about this film. When's the last time something original came out of Hollywood?

If he is in a scene like that, then why would LFL announce him as a part of the main cast, unless he's just that big of an actor to get official top billing in the credits?

Trchnically, nothing is "original." There's this psychological phenomenon where everything that we have seen is not an original thought. If you have thought something, EVER, someone else already has and what our originality is, is really just a different interpretation of a thought.
    --- Double Post Merged, Nov 4, 2015 ---
I still do not understand why his role would be so small and unimportant in the bigger picture of The ST if he was a part of the table reads.

I don't know to be honest but if he were Kanaan the casual audience does not need to make the connection. He will simply be elderly former jedi and his back story since the events of Rebels will be the real significant info to both casual viewers and hard core because its new info.

Marketing budget is better spent on pics, toys, and info for important characters like Sarco Plank, Teedo, and Ello Asty...

I don't think he will be that big of a character or that important a reveal, so I really don't get their strategy for keeping his character hidden. Just say he is playing a Jakku resident of some kind, show a pic of him in costume, and move along. It's like they want people to think he is a big secret to draw attention away from something else.

Did anyone notice they never said who MVS is on that Japanese poster with the entire cast list? Everyone else has their role listed, including Mark Hamill. But not Max Von Sydow. The plot thickens. I think he's someone we know, and they don't want to tell us, because it would give the whole thing away. I don't think Rey is as alone on Jakku as she thinks she is.
