It was said... somewhere recently that it is a necklase. I think it was official (one of the recent children's books or something)

This photo is from a children's book. After seeing what MVS is handing to Poe in the picture, a Cantina member speculated that it might be a necklace of some kind.

The guy claimed it was from the Lightsaber Rescue book.

"the Lor San Tekka picture is from a book called 'Lightsaber Rescue' it's a children's board book with a sound effects bar on the side. Doesn't give away much other than that cool picture.

It was really only 3 or 4 thick board pages. One interesting bit was that Unkar Plutt is the owner of the trading post on Jakku and offers Rey 'a lot of food' for BB-8 and she refuses him."

Lightsabers are 2 handed weapons. You would see it.

A Jedi holocron on the other hand...

Poe is taking it in both hands.

Cylinders from some angles are circles.

One hand placed directly above the other...
If Lor San Tekka was giving Poe a lightsaber, Poe would take it by the other end, like this:

Poe would need Wampa sized hands to conceal the lightsaber with his hands the way they are.

Really in 3 dimensions there is only one way hand an object to another person?

In the picture with Lor and Poe.

It could be a cylinder angled sideways and Poe is taking it in two hands.

All I am saying this picture still allows the possibility that its a lighsabre.

The angle of this shot is different. It is meant to show us the saber. In the shot of Poe and Lor we are looking at it from straight on. Lor is laying it in his hands. Poe's left hand and Lor's right cover most of what we would be able to see. We could be looking directly at the bottom of the saber or a container. The length of it would be extending out in a straight line from our line of sight and we would be unable to see it because of the placement of their hands. I don't think this shot can completely rule out the light saber being passed off here. It doesn't confirm it by any means either.

Edit @Pastor Barndog beat me to my point.

The book that the guy says his photo comes from is the Lightsaber Rescue children's book. Knowing that now, the context of everything from that book is the Lightsaber.

I think you are misunderstanding my reasoning.

Don't focus so much on the angle of the Leia/Maz shot... focus on the size of the lightsaber and the "gesture" or the action.

The lightsaber is pretty big. Not only could Carrie Fisher put 3-4 hands around the length, it's also got quite a bit of thickness, about 5cm/2" in diameter at the grip.

Maz offers the lightsaber with a single hand gripping the bottom end of the lightsaber, supporting the weight from below, in the palm of her hand. Leia receives it the same way, supporting the weight with her palm, not with her fingers.

Take a look at Poe's hands. His left hand (which I'm sure is his non-dominant hand) cups the object in a rather tight grip, as indicated by the tight angle between the back of his palm, and the first knuckles of his fingers. The angle is much closer to that of a closed fist, then someone holding a 5cm diamter cyldiner (test it out yourself).

Now look at Lor San Tekka's hand. He makes a gesture as if he were closing Poe Dameron's hand around the object - the same kind of gesture someone might use if they were giving something small but of value to another. His hand also extends far beyond the end of the object, concealing it from view. Combined with his downward facing palm, it indicated this item is fairly small lightweight, with the centre of mass sitting comfortably within his single hand, and able to be held easily with the fingers alone (he doesn't use his palm to support any weight).

And what about Poe's right hand? It's in a position to "enclose" the item, resting on top and to the side of Lor San Tekka's hand.

That is the single best evidence to suggest that this is the lightsaber...
but the visual language says something else entirely. Even the caption below doesn't really make it clear that it's the lightsaber... as it talks about Lor San Tekka's "message."
Does a lightsaber really qualify as a "message"?

Well I think it is possibly the sabre I could be very wrong. However I think Poe's hand is behind and further up the cylinder than MVS' hand.

A message. . . . what does Han Solo drop in the holographic display before it projects the star map? *Cough*a crystal*Cough*

Why are people assuming it's either the sabre or something else. Can't poe receive two items?

why are we limiting things so rigidly?

You are right it might be something else but there is nothing in that picture that removes the possibility that its a sabre. It might not be.

    Is that rigid?

    That's what I'm thinking.
There may even be some kind of holo-recording with Luke.
Would be an interesting way to rhyme with ANH by having a hologram with Luke instead of Leia.

Poe can receive two items... I'm just saying that the item in the picture doesn't look like it would be the lightsaber.

I can certainly see Tekka giving Poe the lightsaber, but then giving him this other, more important message.

I think it might be a crystal, too. Clearly Lucasfilm had crystals on their mind when they created this concept art. And a crystal is something that could be converted into a necklace, which appears to be what Lor San Tekka is handing Poe.

    Screen Shot 2015-08-21 at 12.21.59 AM.png

I wonder if Han takes this crystal to Maz and that she's able to reassemble the Skywalker saber. Maybe she was in possession of the rest of the saber? It would explain why she appears to be amused when Finn fires it up at the castle. She's happy she was able to fix it. Maybe. Possibly. Potentially.

I'm definitely of the impression that there's a lack of details because it's such a small part. Important, but small.
