It is not the concept of one scene that bothers me - it is the rumor that Luke is sitting on an island by himself during the whole movie while his family is in serious trouble (and maybe his best friend in grave danger).

That is what bothers me - not the original plan of giving Luke a cameo. If none of Luke's friends bite the dust, then I'm totally ok with Luke having a cameo in the last scene.

    Otherwise... WTF Luke!?!?

See, I'm not minding the Luke one scene rumor. However, you bring up good points about Luke being on this island, in seclusion while his family is in pain/danger. Is Luke so ef'd up that he can't "see" their pain or is ignoring it?

    Also:

Mark formed a strong bond with at least one other actor (Daisy) which likely would not have happened had he been a problem on set.

Mark has never for a single minute acted like the new Star Wars movie is anything but wonderful - he's been their greatest ambassador, talking up everyone involved every chance he's had. More than just playing nice, he's gone out of his way to promote the film. These are not the actions of a problem actor that had his part slashed.

I agree. I can't for the life of me think that Mark was a diva on the set. He loves Star Wars!

Aaaaaaaah, this is wise, my friend - we have here a super jedi - not only the last one, but the one who had a 35 years library of knoledge from three of the greatest - Yoda, Obi-Wan, Anakin - not mention Qui-Gon......yet he didn´t feel anything? No disturbance in the Force? Nothing wrong? Nothing bad happens in the Universe? In MY FAMILY? Hard to believe and it has to be backed with a good story explaining why he does nothing.

Oh Sith this is still going on? Lol I really hope none of you actually believe that Luke is in ONE scene that is at the end of the movie. I'll bet he will appear at least 3 times.
    1) Act II - mopping the floor w/an inquisitor type in an Obi-Wan type appearance (very brief)
    2) Act III - Fighting Ren/baddie while kids escape, then chat with dying Han.
    3) Final scene - Approached by Rey at his hideout that was attacked. She does the "I wanna be a Jedi" speech & it shows them training with Lightsabers on the side of Skellig via Heli shot. End Credits.

I've heard a lot of people talk about Luke as a "super Jedi" and other such names, but what if after his very close brush with the Dark side in RotJ that Luke has started to resist the force and is in hiding due to fear of turning and becoming a danger to his loved ones. That could at least explain why he doesn't sense people being in extreme danger throughout the movie.

After 30 years of imagining what Luke did after RoTJ, and then seeing how epic the Jedi were in the prequels, we have all been wanting to see Luke have a turn at the new Jedi powers introduced, and so to now have Luke be crazy, weak, scared, or just plain absent is really insulting and would be such a disappointment.

Why would Luke be featured so prominently in the second teaser if he was only going to appear for one scene?

Not being on screen much doesn't mean he isn't a central part of the story. If the movie is about the search for Luke, he is integral to the plot, characters, and movie as a whole, regardless of how much screen time he gets.

No offense, but that is just one opinion. I don't think you can universally say that everyone wants to see Luke doing flips and beating people down with his immense force powers. I'd rather not, actually. A crazy, weak, or vulnerable Luke sounds like a much more interesting character to me. it implies a story that needs to be heard. Gives a reason for his absence. And makes me hope to see him grow throughout the new trilogy by acting as a mentor to the new heroes while completing his own arc of growth on screen.

If he starts TFA as a fully formed Jedi Badass, then that's all there really is to that character. I want more than that for Luke's character. Starting from a point of weakness makes him human and gives us something root for as he regains the standing that he held at the end of RotJ.

Guess we will agree to disagree. I don't mean flips and that sort of thing, just don't think I picture Luke as a weak, vulnerable Jedi that still needs growth at his age. He needs to be a wise, and very powerful Force user. I don't want crazy old Luke, I want a seasoned war general who is very confident in his abilities. There is growth potential in his story there as well. We don't necessarily need a Rocky story.

Its all about preference. I just really trying to show that not everyone is looking for the same thing out of Luke's progression. I find powerful characters without significant flaws kind of boring. The seasoned general, flips or not, who swoops into save the day can work. But I find the idea of a Luke who is beaten down and crushed under the weight of the power and responsibility he was left with at the end of RotJ a much more compelling character. With Rey, Finn, et al finally giving him a reason to step up and overcome that which he couldn't before.

I won't be put off the film, either way. But one just feels a little less captivating to me.

I don't think he is crazy, he just understands the benefit of being secluded after his entire academy is slaughtered. Plus the issue I have with Luke being extremely powerful and having a large role is that essentially means he should deal with kylo in episode vii and end the threat, thus leaving our main hero rey to do what? Become Luke's sidekick? How does rey accept her destiny to become a Jedi?

I'd be happy either way if Luke is powerful or more broken and afraid of using his powers. If they do portray him as in control and powerful then I'd like to see a scene (probably in EpVIII) of him continuing to be trained by force ghost yoda, or other force ghosts, to show that his training will really never be over.

I couldn't agree more. I also never understood the Luke-as-super-powerful-Jedi-after-ROTJ anyway. I have said it before quite a while back (maybe even created a thread for it), and it was not well received. But how exactly was Luke supposed to learn super-crazy-powerful Force stuff ? Of all the Jedi, he was the least formally trained. He defeated the Emperor not through use of the Force, but through love for his father. He was the last of the Jedi, with no one to train him, except for Force ghosts, who had told him little more than "Use the Force, Luke... let go." I can't imagine that the counsel of Force ghosts could even approach real hands-on training. The Jedi archives were likely destroyed by Palpatine. Sure he may have studied holocrons and meditated a lot, but how could that lead to The Most Powerful Jedi Ever, as many believe he should be in the ST, let alone someone even approaching the Force level of Obi-Wan or Yoda in their prime?

I much prefer an undeveloped, flawed (if not broken) version of Luke, who has serious growing still left to do.
