No, but an actor's face doesn't need to match the character's to work. It's why Rocket Raccoon didn't look like Bradley Cooper in Guardians Of The Galaxy, but the use of the technology was necessary to make the character believable.

Then why would Frank Oz have to control the face? Why not Warwick?

Because Frank Oz would probably be doing the voice as well, meaning that it would be better for Yoda's face to match up with what Oz is saying.

My bet is on Penguins... it's DreamWorks... and not for nothing, it stars Benedict Cumberbatch

Ok... just thinking out loud here, but... maybe because Warwick isn't a puppeteer?

We're taking about Warwick motion capturing Yoda though not controlling a puppet.

I remember an OT documentary from about ten years ago, and a fellow who worked on the creation of Yoda's face mentioned he based Yoda's eyes on those of Albert Einstein.

And if memory serves, I believe that the original Yoda puppet in ESB took more than one person to operate. Frank Oz being the main puppeteer, with others using radio control to operate the eyes/face. It was relatively simple from a mechanical and R/C standpoint, but the combined talents needed and execution required as a team was pure genius IMHO.

    Magical stuff onscreen.

    Magic 8-ball says... doubtful...

Yoda is about 2' 2". and Davis is 3' 6"... that may not seem like much, but its a full third difference. Add to that the movement styles are totally different, and I just don't see him as being a good fit for mocap on Yoda

    @Yoda 2

Ah...blue as in ghost.Did not get that man..haha

About mixing CG with the real deal.I saw Dracula Untold and they CG:ed Charles Dances face.Made him look really creepy and it looked convincing to me.
So they sure have advanced it forward.I would not mind this method being used as long as it is convincingly.Like someone said CG Yoda´s skin color looked strange.

Most of it was CGI... the only cameo he did as Yoda was from a distance, and you really couldn't see him in it...

Figured I'd finally stop lurking and put in my two cents about Yoda. I think it is important to keep in mind that the last Star Wars movie was almost 10 years ago and significant advancements in CGI have taken place in that time. CGI characters don't worry me at all after seeing Gollum in the Hobbit and Caesar in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. So given the advancements in technology in the last 10 years (Avatar, Gravity, Life of Pi, Avengers, etc.), I have total faith in ILM to get force ghost Yoda perfect.

Gollum was the shizzy nizzle... that being said, SW track record with CGI characters ain't all that great. I think they need to stay away from the bleeding edge

Puppet Yoda or bust. I'd rather see Yoda not appear at all in this film than see a digital creation that resembles him. The original design too, not some weird freakish cousin we saw in the theatrical version of TPM. I'll walk out of the theater if a force ghost Yoda appears that looks as bad as the CG imposter we got in the last two films. I'm not against using CG when it is the best option, but using CG to recreate a character that was defined by masterful puppet work is never the best option.

I don't think it matters terribly what Yoda looks like, if he's only a ghostly cameo? The film's larger story will not hinge on Yoda, as did The Empire Strikes Back. There'll be lots of new and elaborate aliens to feed the eyes. I'd assume Yoda will quickly manifest, confer brief nuggets of plot, and then fade back into the Netherworld of the Force until he's had a nap ... even for a ghost, he's getting on in years.

I'm down with the Force ghosts and all. My fear is they will show up like VH-1's Pop-Up-Video program like all the time. Like fresh out the grease.

    "Ladies and gentlemen....YODA!!!"

I'm cool with it, just don't overdo it. Just consider it man.

There is nothing saying non-Force sensitives can perceive the Force ghosts...

I agree. But if a Force-sensitive guy/girl (did I really just type "Force-sensitive?".......sigh) sees ghosts all the time from all the dead Jedi popping up, it could get weird pretty quickly.

    "Luke"
    "Yeah?"
    "Don't forget to...."
    "Luke"
    "Whassat?"
"I fogot to mention, you might want to..."
    "Luke!!"
    "Who the hell??"
    "Make sure you.."
    "LUKE!!"
    "Mother of...!!!"

I'm just saying, it might get dicey.
