They should have made it a bigger thing about his smuggling and it should have been in TFA and not a book .

I really love what they did with her in TFA. I feel sad for her, but she's also such a strong woman. Mother dead, step-parents and entire planet destroyed, finds out her father is a genocidal maniac, her son turns to the Dark Side and murders her husband... and she's still standing tall.

 

I will definitely get 'Lost Stars' - I just finished reading "Before the Awakening" and my thinking is the exact OPPOSITE as yours.

(to summarize) Poe disobeys orders from his commanding officer, comes back expecting to be demoted, but LEIA gets to him first (do we remember any parallel in previous Star Wars movies where a politician was interested in the life of a young pilot?).

The mission to retrieve data from the 'Hevurion Grace' accomplishes TWO things for Leia:
1) it allows Poe to show his piloting skills and to really FEEL like he is a part of something (just like his parents must have felt when fighting against the Empire)
LEIA gets him to BUY IN to the Resistance
2) Leia gets information, Lor San Tekka has (some of) the information necessary in finding Luke.

The Leia we know has always fought for good, against the Empire (and now against the First Order). I just can't help but think she wants to get to Luke first, not to have him help defeat the First Orer, but because she may be the only one powerful enough to destroy him. She knows a properly motivated Luke would make quick work of Kylo Ren. She wants to protect her son (very much like Annakin/Vader wanted to protect Padme, then Luke)...

one quick excerpt from 'Before the Awakening' (it reminds me of how a Sith would treat someone they were trying to win over without being forceful - Palpatine/Annakin)
"She listened intently, her chin in her hand, her elbow on her knee. Poe couldn't remember ever having felt so heard by anyone in all his life"

 

As I said, you got points for originality and creativity. But that's it.

I completely agree. I read or heard somewhere that Leia's resilience and ability to cope with loss and grief is derived from the Force. I'm not sure if it came from a novel or comic book or if I heard it on a podcast, so I'm not sure it's even canon, but I found the concept interesting. Leia's emotional strength isn't something that I would have thought of as a Force power, which is cool. I think it provides more context to Leia's relationship with the Force and demonstrates that the Force can be used for more than levitating x-wings and shooting lightning from your fingertips.

I was just reading the part of the "Rey's Story" when she mentions to Rey that she could have trained as a Jedi. Personally, I reckon it would have been awesome to have her shown her Force-sensitiveness on that way but, I realized she has always been strong and shown her skills in some other way that wielding a lightsaber. I was watching again the Rebels episode "A Princess in Lothal" and at this particular scene, I realized how strong and skilled was Leia even at 15-16 years old:

Basically, we have a Jedi knight and his padawan, a skilled Rebel pilot, a Mandalorian art fighter and a brave Lasat warrior plus the former governor of Lothal all discouraged about the difficulty of getting her ships back. And what does she do? She leads them into achieving their goal! "Don't tell me why we can't, tell me how we will!" Even if she is not a Jedi, she might be using her FS to lead and inspire others.
