Agreed, also because we probably won't have Leia anymore (archive footage?) the story may need more of Luke's involvement. I suspect his demeanour will be different because he'll be free of the guilt that his character was suffering during TLJ.

What I'd love to see is Luke's legacy being perpetuated somehow, maybe the trolling of Kylo also accompanied by the ghost of Luke continuing to pop up occasionally throughout the galaxy, e.g. guiding refugees from the New Republic to safety. Something like that would possibly annoy Kylo as much as Luke delivering stealth Force-wedgies or whatever the equivalent would be...

 

I definitely think we will see Force ghost Luke. While I don’t expect to see a lot of him, I suspect we will get to see something substantial from him given that JJ did not get to work much with Mark the first time. I don’t see JJ not taking advantage of it in IX

 

Will he speak to Rey or show himself? And will he pass that on to Rey? And will he show himself to Kylo?

 

I think he will definitely show himself to Rey. As I said earlier JJ didn’t really get to work much with Mark during TFA so i don’t see him passing the chance to do it this time. I think if we ever see Rey become one with the Force she will have learned that ability. We are just never going to see her learn about it. As far as Luke showing himself to Kylo, that is an interesting question. I’m not sure. I would say it is a possibility. I think there is a chance he may just speak to Kylo but not show himself.

...and so Rey completes her journey to the Dark Side by becoming a high school bully. She earns her new title of Dark Lord of High School by Force-pushing light-siders into lockers and using her Force-backed influence powers to get the cool kids to follow her around. Nah, maybe not...

I would be very surprised if Luke isn't in Episode 9, unless there is a story reason or mandate to move away from the classic character. I appreciate Disney have bought the franchise and as such need to expand it, but that doesn't have to come at a cost of ignoring the potential in Luke's appearance as a Force ghost (or flashbacks, or whatever).

 

The amount of time we will see Luke in IX is pure speculation at this point, but I do feel fairly confident we will see him. I really, really want him to essentially be haunting Kylo. Luke does tell him he will see him. It feels like it would be a good payoff for the dialogue and both characters.

 

I think his role is going to be bigger than Obi-Wan's in TESB and RotJ combined. If not in terms of screen time, then perhaps in terms of impact on the story.

 

I think it’s possible Luke returns to physical form especially if Snoke turns out to be Darth Plagueis and has learned to overcome death. With Carrie Fisher’s passing Mark Hamill is the only lead from the OT who could play a major role in EP 9. Combine that with the extremely divisive reception for TLJ I think there is a chance Luke becomes this films Gandalf the White.

 

Why does everyone assume Luke died? Maybe he had finally perfect Force teleportation and was just sending himself to meet up with Rey so he could train her properly? Until IX comes out, Luke is Schrodinger's Jedi.

If he's going to Rey, that could be... problematic.

 

If Luke makes his words "See you kid" come true, he could become like a "force ghost tinnitus" in Kylos ears. Watch out Ren. Your dear uncle is with you, always!

General Hugs certainly won't be one...

 

But that is exactly what that line means. Moreover, Luke will take over Yoda's role in the saga. Yoda has no connection to any of the new charachters.

Since they seem to be somewhat following Luca's outline for the ST, I think he will be what Lucas had pitch to Mark in the 80s. An Obi Wan type character passing down Excalibur.

 

I do think Luke will return, as he said to Kylo. I do wonder how he will affect our characters though...
