I like the pre-sanitized ones from The Brothers Grimm or Hans Christian Anderson.
I highly recommend The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm: The Complete First Edition with it's beautiful illustrations by Andrea Dezsö.
    Andrea Dezso.png

"The Frog King" by Brothers Grimm.

Many popular stories and fairytales originally dealt with pretty heavy stuff (see Sleeping Beauty or The Little Mermaid).
In Tarzan Jane falls for an ape man despite many other potential suitors!
As Maria Popova from BrainPickings puts it these originals were:

"Beautifully blunt and unaffected, not moralistic or didactic —
as Christian and puritanical ideology would later censor them into being —
but celebratory of the ennobling effect of poetry itself"

Some storytellers today believe we do a disservice to children by shielding them from darker elements.

"I think if you are protected from dark things then you have no protection of, knowledge of,
or understanding of dark things when they show up. I think it is really important to show dark things to kids —
and, in the showing, to also show that dark things can be beaten, that you have power.
Tell them you can fight back, tell them you can win. Because you can — but you have to know that."
    -
    Neil Gaiman.

I expect the ST to end on a positive note but I'm okay with darkness and tragedy in space operas.
Fairytales don't need happy endings or unspoiled characters to convey important messages.
Wislawa Szymborska in her essay "The Importance of Being Scared" writes:

Andersen had the courage to write stories with unhappy endings.
He didn’t believe that you should try to be good because it pays …
but because evil stems from intellectual and emotional stuntedness

and is the one form of poverty that should be shunned.

Tin Soldier" by Hans Christian Anderson.

It seems that in the kid version of the TLJ film novelisation, kids were prepared to ReyLo in the future.
And its forbidden to lie a kids.

I expressed many times my contempt for ReyLo idea, and belief it means a doom to the Star Wars, jet I must be scientifical and put this find from reddit on table- this is the closest ever sign that ReyLo is main aganda of Sequel trilogy.

Rey is girl from desert, born to fix Ben Solo and redeem him.Actually, now we know how both Luke and Leia sense that Rey is one that could redeem Ben !

As already pointed many times by many, such murderer shuld never be redeemed and stay alive , after he has killed his father Han Solo, one of the greatest heroes , and many others, and given to be loved by Rey , a girl with pure heart which should had greater desteny and be born with greater choices in her life than to be a predestined bride that will cure the "beast" , a man that in episode VII killed his own father in font of hers(and ours) eyes, and tried to kill almost all her friends and people he knew, and did not express his regret for atrocities ever even after killing Snoke.

This is catastrophic wrong message to the kids about distinction of good and evil and conequences for conducting worst evil acts-cold blooded murders.

Sad future if this is true. Sad. I am loosing hope.

You can rate me as you want for this post...its all incosequential after this I feel like a Luke on Ahch-To, betrayed and with lost faith.

Not much can make this trilogy worse after what was done to Luke, ReyLo is definately the nail in the coffin for many to turn their backs on this franchise forever. Who wants cheap stupid Twilight bs? For sure not families who go with all their children to cinema to see something inspiring and not an abusive relationship onscreen.

You know Reylo is one of the most beloved fan theories (even for casual viewers), right? Only Kylux is more popular. Even though I'm kinda annoyed by Reylo myself, saying it's the over for this franchise is utter BS. What do you think a family would rather watch? A sad or a happy ending? Right, a happy one. Reylo would be a happy one. Love and forgiveness would also be very inspiring.

Personally I don't know if I want Reylo to happen. At least not anymore. I'm mainly looking forward to a good story.

    great post!

from the first time i watched TFA, i felt like they had drawn from the fairy tale of the Snow Queen (an Anderson tale).
Gerta saves Hans from the wicked spell of the Queen, which has blinded him and made him cruel.
the Snow Queen is also a story of "growing up"; at the end, Gerta and Hans discover that they are children no more.
it ends that way without any particular implications (though you can maybe read it as a sexual awakening if you push hard enough).
for this reason i still think Rey and Ben may end on a platonic note, but honestly, i still don't care so long as Ben is okay.

the point you make about Anderson's darker side is an important one.
but ultimately i really do think Rey and Ben are more Hans and Gerta than the Selfish Prince and the Little Mermaid.

and Star Wars needs a happy ending ~ not just because of the dark times we live in, but because this is the conclusion for our OT heroes.

p.s. actual line from the tale of the Snow Queen (sound familiar?):

"I can give her no greater power than she has already," said the woman; "don't you see how strong that is? How men and animals are obliged to serve her, and how well she has got through the world, barefooted as she is. She cannot receive any power from me greater than she now has, which consists in her own purity and innocence of heart. If she cannot herself obtain access to the Snow Queen, and remove the glass fragments from little Kai, we can do nothing to help her..."

I don't doubt there is a fanbase for these kind of stories, the important question is how big it is among old fans and casuals. How many will leave and how many new fans can compensate it? We will see, it is at least a huge risk. Have they done a market research and risk calculation?

Oh don't worry. If you're talking about the relationship between Rey and Kylo, you really don't have to worry. Even if ReyLo didn't have a sizable fanbase in and of itself, villain x hero pairs are a staple in any fandom. Their relationship has been one of the things that's been universally praised and them teaming up against the Praetrorian Guards is easily the best scene in the movie.

But in case you're referring to the fairytales, them having or not having a fanbase is immaterial. Fairytales are embedded within our collective conscience and inform how we consume and interpret literature and media.

It's Disney. They WROTE the book on market research.

Maybe I'm just too old for this franchise. I also don't understand or find any access to modern music.I just wished they would not have baited and betrayed us old fans this way. A slow transforming process would have been fine with us slowly fading away, but with at least a few positive things to take away. :(

I have the legends stories, I guess this is where my future is heading to. Ignore the future you dislike and value the past. ;)

Apparently most of the casual viewers like Reylo. Reylo even generated lots of new fans. Isn't that what we want? A growing community?

I really dislike how you're generalizing all this.

Let us better agree to disagree. It seems all your wishes may come true while none of the things I hoped for this trilogy will be done. And I prefer to stay with the past. ;)

Like with anything, Star Wars has to grow out of what it used to be. The franchise needs to get updated ever so often, so it stays relevant (not just in what the story is about but also the sort of characters it portrays). It can't exist in the past. That which is static, is dead.

While I feel absolutely terrible that you feel like you can't connect with your fandom, I'm sure there's no harm in trying. We all outgrow the things we love but we hold on, nonetheless. Even if it is only for the way it made you feel all those years ago.

TFA had me: Rey = liking and Kylo = hating
TLJ had me: Rey = disliking and Kylo = hating more
so guess what a possible ReyLo would do to me.

Sorry, but that's just how I feel about it and especially since Kylo's character was based on the destruction of my favorite character Luke Skywalker. All of this together is something I cannot overcome or forgive. :(

The only problem with the ones cited is that none of those characters are overtly stated killers, at least I don't remember them so in the stories that way.
I agree there certainly is darkness if you fill in the blanks with these, and I can't claim to have read all fairy tales, but enough in my eyes, to at least state that much. The creepy thing about the Frog Prince is that the father makes the daughter share a bed with the frog after she runs out on the deal to retrieve the ball. In Rumpelstiltskin, the abusive king locks up the girl to spin gold under pain of death, and they get married. ???? So the unsavory themes are definitely there.

Frankly, I have children and there is plenty of darkness in this world these days without piling it on. What I don't see for them is enough positivity. I try to instill to them that the good guys always win, even if they don't initially or something bad happens. Light, and good nature always prevail in the end.

Redemption for Ben, depending on the definition, was/is always on the table. That was never a question for me, but for him to bed the main hero after his deeds is going to feel odd no matter how it is put to screen. Anakin murdered Sand People unbeknownst to Padme. Rey watched Kylo commit patricide. Anakin murdered a temple full of people, including younglings and he was saved, but also conveniently died as well. ;) It is hard to say, what would have become of the Luke/Anakin relationship if he survived. I imagine Luke would want him to answer for his crimes, you know, serve out a life term alive under his protection.

I am unwilling to run down every quote, but at some point, JJ or Kasdan had talked about Kylo being the reverse Luke, climbing the darkside corporate ladder. There was also mention in Lucas' treatments about a dark entity ascending to the next plane. Obi-wan to Luke = Snoke to Kylo ?? Lucas' also intended Luke to have kids, but again who knows what they are doing now.

Would you be willing to step up and redeem someone you don't know? Sleep with someone you saw commit murder? Maybe if Han was getting drunk and beating him with the backside of his blaster you could make that leap. Luke saved Vader in part because he was his father. Han walked out over the chasm because Kylo was his son. Family could make you do that. Rey arguably has already tried, even if that aren't related. Ben has made his bed and now he has to sleep in it. Realistically, Rey will only attempt to save/spare Ben again as an IOU for 'saving' her in Snoke's throne room, even though he had personal interests in mind, but that is about it.

The franchise does need to move forward, but I wholeheartedly disagree that this trilogy was the place to do it, but that point is moot. One can't know where they are going without knowing the past. I think 'let the past die' may be misdirection, and poor advice from the antagonist, but I have also been surviving off a heavy diet of crow since 2015.

If Reylo happens, it happens. I have slowly learned to accept what I cannot control and have resigned myself to potentially wearing glasses with heavy filters if am to enjoy more SW, or even historically. My preference is that Rey and Kylo are part of Anakin's family tree, and a final dichotomy of his representation of the force. The dark and light. How that is resolved, I cannot say, but it would at least tie the 9 part saga together.

for all the children who make grave mistakes in their lives, or for whom darkness touches them through little to no fault of their own, the most positive message that the ST can send is that it's never "too late" to do right or be good. the greatest hope is that Light can prevail for the lost too.

Pats fellow oldtimer @nightangel on the back.

I know just how u feel old friend. Bad enough da world is passing us by at 1,000 mph but they also have 2 spit at us 2.

Then only thing i wanted from this trilogy was 1 good new Skywalker. Oh wel.

And i hope Rey doesn't take up the name. That's just fraudulent.

I know I can get verbose, but I am guessing you skimmed over the part where I said:

For most the issue lies in the "let's make babies now", not saving Ben. Especially, if he is the last Skywalker, that would be tragedy to the fullest.

Yes, yes. Most fans of Reylo just want them 2 breed. Doesn't Rey falling 4 KR goes against her being a SFC?

no, i did read that, but i'm making a larger point.
there has to be hope beyond the redemption.

for many people that hope is ensuring that the legacy of his bloodline isn't ultimately wasted.
and that's about as standard fairy-tale as you can get.
